Sveta, this is a very serene outfit. I think that even if your style has become too bold and bright for these pieces, you do look pretty in these muted tones. I love your bright accents of yellow and blue!

tracina, good call on not actually shredding your clothing I like how the keyhole neckline echoes both the lake and the moon's spherical shapes.

Kari, you've certainly nailed the calmness you felt from the photo. Your blouse is especially perfect here, I can't tell if it's semi-sheer or not, but it looks so light and airy.

Joy, I like the pleated top and have no problem seeing your pretty arms The first NAS jacket looks great to me, that nipped in shape is super. I LOVE #3! The tweedy jacket paired with the leather skirt is just so awesome, AND with the pearls and big belt? Fab! (Also, your phone is an extra pop of turquoise! ^^)

AJ, such a cute eyelet top! The vertical lines from the ruffles echo the vertical lines from the trees nicely.

Jenava, such great contrast between the structure of the denim top and the softness of the skirt. Your gold and black tie-die mesh silk scarf sounds like a lovely addition! I love how this very clean outfit fully captures the mood of the photo.

Rae, what a fun dress! I love it. I also adore your pretty scarf tied to your handbag, lovely tie-in of the photo's colors. And Mr. Hank also fits in nicely with the photos colors

You make me return to the photograph itself and to take yet another look at it, your outfits in themselves are copy-worthy.

I got some help, so here's today's inspired outfit plus a couple more. I went for the grey color of the photo with a touch of the aqua blue. The moon is represented by pearls or the belt buckle in the third photo. The vertical lines of the trees inspired using pants in #1 & 2 with a narrow stripe and the pleated top in #2.
#1 shows the grey Halogen swacket from NAS worn open. Tags are still on. What do you think?
The pleated grey top in #2 was in the donate bag. Is it too full? I'm showing aged bare arms here. Are they OK?
#3 shows my 98 cent leather skirt and the NAS tweedy jacket worn open. Honest opinions and suggestions are very welcome.

For this photo, I saw the overall vibe as more muted and calm than "moody." I tried to think about something that would evoke the beautiful soft blues and grays of the painting. Here's what I ended up with:

*Gray seamed ponte knit pencil skirt (last year's Halogen NAS version.) This is my first of the 4(!) identical but differently colored skirts I own. I love the way that it fits, and the tailoring is perfect for work, yet the knit is utterly comfortable. The gray evokes the predominant color in the painting.
*Periwinkle paisley Sweet Pea faux-wrap mesh top with some pale blues, browns, and salmon colors in the pattern. The print is a bit more "wild" than the painting, but I liked how the pops of soft blue peek through the tree in the inspiration photo, and to me this top evokes that image.
*Pale blue camisole for modesty and to enhance the color.
*3 strands of cream pearls (the "moonlight")
*Burgundy pumps, because frankly, it was either that or wear my gray pumps that I already incorporated into yesterday's outfit. ;)
And, of course, my everyday periwinkle handbag had to make an appearance, because I rarely coordinate with my bag.

I have not looked at other outfits yet - just got home! Here is mine:
I really like this picture but it is a hard one to use. I think "serenity" is the main quality that comes to mind when I look at it. I decided to go mostly monochromatic and low key for this outfit. This skirt and blouse are my least wearable items now - somehow they do not feel like me anymore. They may be heading to a donation pile soon but they felt the right elements for this picture color scheme. This blouse's pattern reminded me of the trees in the picture.
I have added a couple of yellow accents - a belt and a necklace - to honor the moon. My necklace shape does also fit with this shot of nature: circles and a leaf and a flower... My sandals and bag are all in the same low key.
And then I added the blue jacket. I know, it is a brighter blue that the one in the picture but my heart just asked for it! I will call it " moonlit dreams about a sunny sky tomorrow"!
Now to look at others...

I have thoroughly enjoyed skimming over everybody's detailed comments and wish I could take the time to do the same. At the very least I want to say how awesome it is to read and see such varied yet meaningful interpretations.

Here is mine. The dress seemed to mirror a lot of what I saw in the photograph - vertical lines, the leaves on the tree tops, the slivers of moonlight and the dark depths of the river. The pearls to represent the moon. The tights were more for coverage and the nude-on-me shoes to eliminate too many vertical lines. But looking at the photograph, I feel like it mirrors the top half - the river bed and the lighter soil on top and m silver nail polish the slivers of moonlight.

This challenge provided an SYC bonus to me as I had forgotten all about this dress. I had bought it around the time we moved house and it went to the back of the closet. Thank you Bella!

Oh, thanks Aida and Thunaluta...It IS a gorgeous dress, and all the better because it was a gift from my generous friend who no longer wanted it!

I'm so thrilled to see what each of you has done!

@modgrl, the soft smoky tiers on that blouse evoke the mood of the photo perfectly for me!

@MaryK - I am so impressed at the way you always manage to make your "formula" jacket/skirt/blouse/heels look completely different with each new challenge. The tree blouse is just right here.

@Lynne, what you didn't mention was the amazing texture of your vest, which for me recalls early photography in all its painstaking light-reflecting glory.

@Ornella - we were on the same wavelength (ha ha...sorry!) about the cardigans! Love the well-chosen details here.

@Bella - that SCARF!!

@jonesy, I enjoyed the careful layering of elements in your interpretation.

@QueenMum, with that owl pendant, I would feel safe in any forest.

@Carole, you absolutely captured the mood with each of your wonderful outfits, and I love those sandals!

@Heather, you have the best accessories in the history of womankind! WOW. Those are fab!

@jjsloane, your blouse is divine, perfect, and gorgeous on you!

@Aida, you are positively va va VOOM in those neutrals with the teal shoes. I love that belt, what a clever addition.

@GirlX - that belt!! What an inspiring way to use it.

Thanks, all of you. I find this incredibly fun.

Fabulous everyone! (still a bit sorry that I'm not joining in at the moment. No time this morning to look for things).

Suz - this may be my favourite of your outfits that you've posted.

I don't have time to comment on the others, but all fab!

Jonesy, I fully agree with your comment about this photo feeling "out of time", this is just how I feel about it. Love the new "lace" top! I think you did a great job with the muted tones, and love how the grayish scarf and shoes mirror each other.

Kim, I love that your outfit isn't fully muted because, as you said, that's not what you wear. I think the cardigan and top work perfectly to tribute the photo. And I love that the two colors you DID add to your neutral outfit were primary colors.

Carole, all three looks are fab! I can't guess which one you wore out because all three deserve to be seen The scarf in #3 looks lovely and picks up on all the colors from the photo.

Heather, I LOVE your colorway! I feel like if we were to walk up to where the moon hits the horizon, these are the colors we would see; soft, earthy, and with a touch of moonlit magic.

Jjsloane, beautiful print on your top and the colors really do fit perfectly! Fab moon pendant, too.

Suz, gorgeous dress! I love it at that length, especially with those nude heels. Even without the cardigan, the sleeveless-ness of the sheath still echoes vertical lines.

Girl X, clever belting! I think you still have the colors of the photo in your outfit, just not every one of them. Does your wall count? It adds some of that turquoise blue I love love the white heels with your outfit!

It's interesting that many of you also felt that this photo was tough to style from, though it was clearly a loved piece. And yet, when I look at all the outfits it inspired, it's amazing to see such creativity!

Rita, you've nailed the colors perfectly! I also love that the ruffles on your top mirror the water in the photo.

Mary, the print on your top really does capture the mood of the forest, and surrounding them with brown is a great idea. I also LOVE that you wore your brown pumps with the little circles, how clever!

Diana, the dark colors paired with the soft fabrication is a really great interpretation of the mood the photo evokes; the paneling on your skirt also tributes the vertical lines of the trees, as if the reflection was bent across the water. That mother-of-pearl pendant is AMAZING.

Lynne, you really do look lovely in taupes! I love your colorway, it's like someone took the photo, removed the gloom, but left the serenity :)

Ornella, I had trouble with this one too but for different reasons I think considering the logical interpretation of the photo you were able to devise a lovely, soft, and very appropriately inspired outfit! AND you're mixing black and brown like a pro.

Bella, your colorway is actually spot on, whether you feel the pieces were suitable or not! Your jacket echoes all the brown (but is lighter) and your scarf echoes all the turquoise (but is darker). I say well done.

This was a difficult one for me. I don't click with this photo at all, it doesn't 'speak' to me, it doesn't trigger any memories or thoughts or emotions in me. The only thing I really saw were a bunch of colours I would normally never wear together! Combine that with the super casual dinner we have planned and ... brown off shoulder shirt, cropped jeans, and something a little different.

I'm posting mine before I go back and read everyone else's. Really looking forward to seeing what you've all done today!

My Comrags midi (so far...do we still think it should stay this length? Opinions were mixed with the old shoes...) with its circular shapes, moody blues, greens, and browns, and dull gloss watercolour effects immediately came to mind when I looked at the photo. The vertical lines of my sweater echo the trees, and the "moon" is a clockface, since for me the stillness of this photo evokes time in a powerful way.
