Wow, so many fabulous outfits here!

I have also found this poster the most challenging of all five, especially since I do not own any beige/tan. Instead I went for the industrial feel and hard lines: lots of black (leather coated skinnies) and metal (necklace, shoe cap, hardware). I got asked at the lab if i was going to a rock concert afterwards, so not quite sure I managed to capture the right feel. it was fun trying though.

L'Abeille :: fab. The scarf adds another dimension to the outfit.

Una :: How clever!?! This dress is such obvious choice, I bet it now feels even more versatile.

Aida :: Absolute perfection. If I was 'reading' your outfit without knowing the inspiration about it, I'd see the very elements you chose and translated from one form to another.

Oh, how many new fab outfits since my last log in! I've checked them all, and they are each very special and of course thank your for your kind words to me. Can I come and hug you all?

Ornella: I always have a yellow bag for a few yers on, now:-). In fact I've been looking for a yellow bag to replace my very old one, and finally purchase this (even if it's a vegan bag) because I couldn't find one leather bag that suited me in yellow:-)

OMG Suz, I certainly didn't want to make you cry-so sorry for that!!!:-((
Life happens to all of us, the good and the bad, too.
BTW your taupe dress(and all outfit) is beautifull!!!

Ingunn: it's not only about vanity, or missing some social life like in case of your MIL(perhaps she is retired already). In my case I needed to stay active in my career, so had no other choice at all -the work had to be done:-)- but found it a real challenge to switch to- and live with- HA's, indeed.

It took me some time to be able to speak about my flaws with optimism, but here I am now-and You: Fabbers- are all my friends, no?:-)
Fab looks ladies! Mostly monochrome, but still quite a good variety especially in silhouette. This was one of my favorites to look through.

Here's my outfit. This is a simple poster with big impact, and what really jumps out at me are the monochrome palette, strong vertical lines, and the shaded gradient. Details in my WIW post for the day

bella :: I love the pin-stripe action. YLF.

deb :: The pattern in the sweater indeed does look Art Decoish. How great is that? And how beautiful is your smile?

Rachylou :: Wow, you are very committed to the cause. Fab modern take on the 20s dresses style, but the shoes really make the outfit.

Karie :: this is brilliant! The sweater is just perfect for today, as are the accessories. I *love* buttons at the back.

Time to post and run, but later I will enjoy my cup of tea while reading through everyone's posts. From what I saw early this morning, everyone looks fab! To quote MaryK, "Big Fun!"

I really wanted to do something a lot more urban, but it was a work day so I needed to be a Dressy Bessie. I picked up on the monochromatic aspects of the poster and added some art deco touches. The sweater top has a geometric pattern to it with buttons that run down the back. I thought my necklace had a bit of an art deco vibe to it, as did the frames of my glasses. I also wore my new favorites - nude microfishnet hose.

Skirt, JCP; lightweight sweater, F21; necklace - crushed class and beads

Yes. So quite the challenge! I can't really remember the movie, altho I have watched it start to finish. I just have impressions of it, which maybe comes from watching clips. In high school I had a greeny-gold, drop-waist dress that would have done the trick... but that is several years and lbs in the past.

My first thought was the robot. But the Metropolis robot was the inspiration for Star Wars' C3P0 and I felt movie confusion. I also thought about other movies inspired by Metropolis, like Blade Runner and Gattaca. But both too modern to fly. Then I thought about this dress I have that has an art deco pattern "sort of." I.e., thought I might try for the quick and superficial nod. But the design of it and its patterned material were way too modern. It had zero art deco vibe.

I had to email my brother, film maker and my comrade in pseudo-intellectualism (which may be either deeply ironic or an oxymoron). So after some discussion about what the movie was really all about (the haves and the have nots), and some whinging about why I don't have a pair overalls and how perfect that would have been, and some suggestions re. show girl headwear and hula hoops that can't be worn to work... I went with the have/have not theme: Denim coloured sack dress, kinda drop waisted, lace-up shoes.
Amazing work, ladies! And it is work, works of art!

This one was really a mind bender to translate into an outfit, was it not? I was still formulating approaches as I went through the thread, even tho I'm dressed and at work...

INGUNN, RUNCARLA - Approach via colour! Specifically the grey of the "concrete inferno."
JJ, ASTRID, BELLA - Approach via colour! Specifically the stylized sepia and black of the movie poster.
LYN - Approach via mood! Really amazing spot-on effect, Lyn, with pieces so different from the heavy stylization of the movie. Amazing use of colour to convey drabness. Like a tinted old-time picture.
SARAH A - Approach via mood! Specifically the roiling boil of anger.
JOY, SHEDEV - Approach by persistent philosophy! Your outfits arevery punkish, and that's like the child of Metropolis' Expressionism. And Joy, the shirt with Seattle on it... approach via atmosphere!
SUZ, AJ, SONA - Approach via atmosphere and architecture! Related to mood, but I feel there's a difference. Yes, your outfits really do evoke the setting to me, reflect the architecture... well, y'all know how I am about matching myself to the surrounding architecture...
DAYVIES - Approach via artifact! The Chanel-esque jacket, well, Chanel is the '20s. And thinking back to recent collections, it's only dialed-up the chimney-sweep industrialism.
ORNELLA - Approach via geometry! It was your bracelet that really did it for me. The pyramids make the connection for me to Art Deco, through Egypt and geometry. The sepia tint, btw, was inspired.
NATALIE - Approach via geometry! And artifact! I have those shoes! The flapper dress is fantastic. You actually have headdress!
DIANA, MARYK - Approach via colour and geometry! This is so outstanding I can't stand it. This is like yesterday, a special magic. Modern silhouette and pattern, but seamless with the past in colour and geometry... So, like, y'all belong to the same secret society, do you?
FIRECRACKER - Approach via pattern! Which is different from geometry. Pure spirit!
SHEVIA, JAYNE - Approach via robot! I was going to go with this but ran into a mental roadblock...
JULIEJOHN - Approach via character! You would fit right into the movie.
DEB - Approach via the hula hoops! Sheer genius translating this. Absolute sheer genius.

...And CARO - You seriously just rock!
I have never seen this movie but I went through the photos and the color, or lack of, caught my attention. The pics did seem rather somber and I just could not do somber today so this is what I came up with. Gray and white, with a dash of shiny shoe. The pattern in the sweater does look sort of art deco-ish.

Natalie :: the sequin tank top looks terrible and I can rescue it from you any time thankyouverymuch.

Diana :: I love everything about this! You simply rock.

Mary :: This is the closest visual feel to that of the poster. Superb job.

AJ :: You have everything going one here: clean lines, symmetry, darkness, metal. Absolute delight to see.

Astrid :: "I would have never thought to wear my pieces in this combination". You've nailed it, the look and the whole idea behind PPC.

Shedev :: Fantastic jeans for the challenge and I prefer the second top, although both work to my eye.

Sona :: I love all graphic references in your outfit. Stellar.

Jayne: what a gorgeous metallic shirt. The backdrop is too sunny for the dark feel of the poster, though.
Sona: I like your geometric interpretation; the outfit looks great on you.
Juliejohn: love your quirky, inventive take. You look good in that hat!
Suz: I'm in awe. This look is just stunning on you. Love the tonal simplicity and all the sumptuous textures.
Day Vies: Chanel-esque and pinstripes work well for the challenge and look fab on you!
Joy: Love your leather. Those pants are so flattering, and the jacket is so chic, edgy, and classic all at once (how can that be?).
Sarah: Such a cool tee. That look is the epitome of casual chic.
jjsloane: Your metallics rock, and you look so at ease in them.
Runcarla: This may be my favorite outfit on you yet. So streamlined, like the skyscraper.
Shevia: Your poses are so fun. After yesterday, I can't get your resemblance to Audrey H out of my head, though. This outfit looks great on you.
Ornella: too fun! You rock this challenge even better than yesterday's. Didn't think that was possible.
lyn67: I so enjoyed ready your post. Your super-cool tonal outfit looks terrific on you, and I love the splash of sunshine provided by the bag.
Caro: you are a one spunky, cool-looking scientist. That look is great on you.
Ingunn: Wow, neutrals are such a different look for you, but you wear them well!
Shedev: what a fab jacket, and those striped pants--great look!
Astrid: you look so cool and casual and yet polished. Fantastic urban casual look.
AJ: even the studs on your jacket add to the "Metropolis" feel. I like this look on you.
MaryK: You have brightened up Metropolis, and yet your outfit does echo the vibe. This look is amazing on you.
Diana: Great outfit! Love the mustard pants with that tunic/dress.
Natalie GP: love, love that dress and pumps combo, with the Fossil bag. And the flapper dress is so fun. I thought of doing black and white, too!

well, I read up on the movie and decided to go with another of my FFBO since metailic (ie robotic) is one of my favorites. I am posting a picture from last spring.

I actually wore it with black boots that have a motocycle feel and it worked very well. I would have used my silver oxfords but they are currently at dear BF house.

I felt fab and futuristic all day!

Now to check out the pictures from the rest of you all.

Funny how so many of you saw brown in that picture! From my perspective (earth tones don't live here) I saw black with accents of gold or maybe beige, so that was where I began.

First thought, my gold glitter shell/vest, was in the wash, and besides wearing those colours next to my face is tricky. So here's the backup:

Beige box-pleated skirt, for the colour and the verticals. Black turtleneck and black blazer, for the art deco severity; hair up again, for the same reason. I added my black-and-beige spotted pattern scarf, worn under the blazer lapels, to produce the silhouette vibe that I get from the vertical lines on the skyscrapers. I would have preferred no pattern or extra colours, but also needed a single rounded/shiny element like the robot head for contrast. I wore it with black knee-high boots (not my riding boots, but the for-me heeled, pointy and fitted) to clinic this morning, but it's such a sunny day I've switched to black stack-heeled loafers with a black metallic buckle, also fitting I think. Will try to post pics of it both ways once I get home.
I was inspired by the colors of the poster and the art deco style. It made me think of this sleeveless dress, with a 1920s-feeling print in bronze and lavender on black.
The lettering reminded me of my hammered silver and brass forward-facing concentric-hoop earrings. The mechanistic feel of the image inspired me to wear metallic shoes and zippered leggings.

Here are the pieces:
pleated-neck, sack-style knit shift dress (made by me)
scoop neck long-sleeved tee (Caslon)
black elbow-sleeve open-front cardigan (Michael Michael Kors)
black leggings with zipper detail at back (Nordstrom)
metallic flats (AGL)
mixed metal necklace and earrings (Marjorie Baer)

I considered other options for today's challenge, but I wanted to wear this dress, because it's a rather neglected item in my closet. I also haven't worn this sweater in a couple of years, after wearing it to death for the first two years of its life with me.
This one was hard for me too. I have little brown or art deco in my wardrobe. I started with the pants because the vertical stripes remind me of the skyscrapers. The black and brown color scheme made me think steampunk so I added the lock and key earrings and brown studded leather. I tried two different shirts but wasnt really happy with either.
jeans- Tripp
jacket- Guess
shirt- Celebrity Pink
boots- Mix #6

This was the hardest one for me this week but I am pleased with how it turned out. I love Art Deco style but it's not very well-represented in my wardrobe. (I do own things with sharp, geometric patterns but they all also appear to be drapey.) Also, much of my urban stuff is steampunk urban, which is not really the same thing as modern urban at all.

I went with the black/grey/gold color scheme and tried to incorporate some of the sharp lines and urban touches. My mustard pants are the perfect dirty gold color from the poster. My top (which is actually a dress hiked up and layered over a tee) has the sharp, straight lines from the poster. I added my sharp, structured black blazer for some harder, urban edge. My boots have a patent shine as a nod to the sci-fi theme but their asphalt grey color is perfect for conveying the mood of the gritty, urban, dark city. Finally, my silver bag (which also made an appearance for Star Wars) has more sharp, straight lines and sci-fi sheen.
This was the toughest one since I haven't seen the movie (I ordered it
on Netflix but it hasn't arrived yet), but I did research on the movie
online. It looks like a fascinating film and DH and I are planning to
watch it together (he loves sci fi).

1-7. This first outfit was
inspired by the buildings and diagonal lines on the movie poster and the
city lights. The dress has diagonal ombre lines and so do the purse and
shoes, and they are all in black/grey/taupe which fits with the color
scheme and urban feel. I went with a Art Deco style bracelet to reflect
the time period, and chain necklace (since the workers are symbolically
chained down by their work).
Classiques Entier ombre dress
Missoni for Target pumps
Fossil vintage striped satchel
Nordstrom Art Deco bracelet
Banana Republic chain necklace

8-11.
Since it's a black and white film, I thought I'd have fun with my pics
in black and white too. This sequin top reminds me of the rings
surrounding the robot and the stiff tank is like the robot's hard shell.
White House Black Market geometric sequin tank
Anne Fontaine black blouse
Gap Real Skinny pants
Stuart Weitzman black ballet flats
Michael Kors black studded satchel

12-17. I couldn't resist throwing in my flapper dress from the recent 20's party
I attended. This reminds me of the heavily beaded and somewhat risque
outfits that the socialites and dancer wore in the film, plus it's
consistent with the time period, since the film came out in the 1920's.
The beaded dress is sheer so I wore a slip underneath, but maybe if I
was in the film I wouldn't!
Beaded flapper dress and slip
Clarks black Mary Jane pumps
Nina beaded clutch
Black gloves, feathered headband, and long bronze pearl necklace

I
didn't think I would be able to do this movie well (since I don't have
any metallic corset tops or anything, LOL), but I'm actually really
happy with the way these outfits came out! Everyone's outfits are so inspiring as well! (And Caro, you make the perfect Rotwang!)
You really own that look, it feels so natural on you, and I love the tower on your shirt. BAM! You nailed it.

Suz, you look really good, sincere and beautiful.
Caro, Rotwang never looked so good!

Lyn67 - very interesting post, and I really like your outfit. I was prepared for something really soul-sucking by your description, but those neutral shades are lovely on you. I'm glad your hearing aids help to transcend the slience, thank you for sharing your feelings on them.

Ornella - GREAT outfit and poses! You made me chuckle and I really like your patterned hose with booties.

Shevia - you lightened us all up with your lovely outfit and your great robot pose. Love the somber face!

Here's mine, and it was hard for me because I wanted to be more urban, more chic, more futuristic, but alas, my wardrobe is sadly lacking in those departments at this time. Definitely something to think about when I get a bigger shopping budget. So instead I channeled my inner 1920's vibe, the vibe of androgyny and anything goes, rules were made to be broken!

You can read my whole novel/post here: http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....l-suburbia.
