My first thought was a beloved sweater in black and white buffalo check, but too much dark. Then I remembered this less loved, because less contrasty, sweater to wear instead. I paired it with a winter white midi skirt and oatmeal over-the-knee socks, because I hate pantyhose and snow was predicted.</p> <p>For the colour I added this scarf, dyed by my daughter, in what approximates the blue and teal of the painting. I don't own or wear yellow or orange, so I ignored those. A skinny belt and loafers brought in the black. (Shown with white coat at work, which is after all how people saw me.)</p> <p>I wore it out with a white beret, grey mukluks and my new long black puffer coat. The coat closet reminded me that my ski jacket is the perfect blend of white with crisscrossing black lines, but I was unwilling to forgo the leg warmth of the long coat.</p> <p>More white-out than I am used to, and less contrast. And the mix of cool and warm whites was out there for me. White is white Paige jeans and booties, orange is the Kenneth Cole raincoat. Yellow is a pullover sweater and a bit of blue is an old plaid shirt. Bits of black were the bag and their straps and black soles and heels of the booties. I was going to a long dentist appointment so no earrings or scarf. Alas, I have no orange in my closet, unless you count the bits in a pattern of tulips in the Land's End sweater set I kept after my mum died. Which, come to think of it, would not be out of line for a de Kooning homage...</p> <p>But here's what I tried instead. First outfit was for a planned outing with girlfriends. But one has come down with a cough so is self-isolating, so we are not meeting. I made the second outfit for working from home / errands -- a bit more casual.&nbsp;</p> <p>Tried to catch the black / grey lines, the cobalt, and flash of red/ orange, the golden yellow. Are you excited?&nbsp;<br />Our first inspiration picture is&nbsp;Interchange by Willem de koonig, dated 1955.&nbsp;<br />&nbsp;I did a little bit of reading on the work and the artist as I like to do. There is not a lot to be found about this particular one, except that it is one of artist's first abstract landscapes.
