Once you've acquired wardrobe updates, you need to road test the new looks and items in order to identify more gaps. Do that for a while first - while shopping your closet.

Isabel - I'm starting from scratch because my wardrobe had somehow become very gear-focused, and that's not really my style, as I discovered through hanging around YLF. Very gear-type shoes, generic long tees and polartech jackets were staples.

The way I went about it was to shop for the next season, so this summer I started thinking about what I wanted my fall wardrobe to look like. It was easier for me to closet clean if I didn't have to worry about what I was wearing tomorrow because I just threw everything else out (even so, as you saw from a recent picture, I still clung on to the fleece) and rebuild my wardrobe from the ground up, as it were - shoes to outerwear. I am resigning the gear stuff to a bin under the bed - reserved for yardwork only. :)

I think I have enough of my new basics that it's time to step back and fine tune. Should be fun!

Yes, as everyone says, the more the merrier!

The longer this goes, the more I believe you could probably learn the most important SYC lessons in 8 weeks ... and then try baby steps of going back out into the real world.

Of course you can join us! I am way more of a newbie than you, and I just jumped right in. It seemed like something that would force me to evaluate what I have, and to actually wear what I already own! Now, will I make it to January 1? Maybe....But I figure it will still have been a worthwhile thing to do.

bj1111 - haha, don't be so sure about that!

For me, SYC would be helpful in determining my actual wardrobe needs at this point...but let me know if there are obvious holes that would trip me up in the first week (like if I had listed tunics but no leggings/leans that would be an obvious oops).

Personally, I'm not a big shopper - the purchases I've made recently have been through gritted teeth, and I've returned at least half (more, I'm sure) of everything I've bought/ordered (even in person, I'm not always able to try things on in the store). SYC for me, would be more a creative exercise in using what I've kept in fun, creative ways.

Marlene - SYC is totally a fun, un-official group thing, so you can totally set your own rules and time frame.

Go for it! Any amount of SYC can be valuable in revealing things about your wardrobe and shopping. You could set your own limits (like only 2 new items or for one month, etc.) then stick to those as far as possible.

MPJ, I am in the same boat as you are in building my wardrobe basically from scratch this year. However I don't plan to get ALL holes plugged at once. I suspect that I may need fewer things than I think I do. I am going to play with what I have and see what I really miss. It is too easy to get carried away with shopping and get your "needs" and "wants" all mixed up!:-)

I was thinking that now that I have most of my fall stuff handled, I would do a SYC for the month of October only. I think its time to work with what I have and use this time to see what I actually wear. I don't know if I have the fortitude to make it to the end of the year! But a month is totally do-able. Does the SYC allow short-term participants?

Am I crazy? I have been really trying to build up my fall/winter wardrobe, and I almost feel like I could do SYC at this point (for the home stretch, anyways)...

I don't know if I'd have too many exceptions to make it worthwhile, but I feel like I need to catch my breath and see what I need to add for *my* lifestyle. The MOTG lists are only good up to a point, and then, as Angie says, you need to adapt them to your own style and needs.

Tops: Basic layering tees, tunics, button front woven blouses, cardis
Bottoms: leans, leggings, bootcut jeans (fit could be better on some items)
Outerwear: puffers, trench and wool coats, bf and "Chanel" jackets
Footwear: plenty of boots, ballet flats, Cons, heels for church
Accessories: pearls, fashion necklaces, scarves (not silky tho), 1 handbag**

You guys have seen a lot of the above items...think I can make it work? My exceptions would be:
* underwear, bras & socks
* long gown & shoes for black tie event (really hoping to score at TJ Maxx or on sale somewhere)
* everything on Angie's "must-have" for fall list (hahahah, just kidding)

** the 1 handbag would be the Tano bag I've been going on and on about, and would order it today.

Am I missing something obvious? I would love to get a brown leather jacket and booties, but those are kind of "extras" to me. I also am not sure about my sweater collection for layering but would like the challenge to wear jackets more...

What do you guys think? Room for one more?
