Oh, sorry April - I totally spaced out on answering your question.

The room that I take photos in is far from ideal - small, barely any natural light, and also I'm usually snapping photos before leaving for work in the morning when it's always completely dark. (I start early.) So I have a small tripod set up on a tall shelf at one end of the room and use one of the automatic settings that turns out the best (Portrait Mode works best for me - it's a Canon) with the flash on light to medium.

Ideally it would be great to tweak with the manual settings, but I just don't have time to do this in the morning, and the poor light makes the manual mode too difficult to work with.

Thank you all so much! I had a great time putting together things for this challenge, and I was surprised too that I only had to use one "new" item that I had recently bought (the chambray shirt.) Originally when I heard that Spring 2010 would contain a major '90s resurgence, I was really dreading the new trends, but Michelle's challenge has really helped me see that some of them *can* work for me - though I'm sure I'll still be wearing the bolder jewel tones that I've grown to love over the past several years.

My word, Kari. I can't believe you already had "on-trend spring colors" available in your closet -- fabulous! You are so au courant and it makes me realize I need to step it up a little.

I love your photos. They're always clear and well-lit, and show all the details we'd like to see. Any secrets to achieving that? Do you have a tripod set up in the same place at all times?

Your outfits with the polka dot ruffled shirt are making me swoon! The polka dot hose are so fun with your skirt outfit and the brown boots are genius against the darker colours. Love!!

My favourites are the first one (love the zebra belt with the denim shirt!) and the last one, as it looks like something I'd wear again and again.

Michelle, sorry for taking so long - here's my response. I've copied the text descriptions of the 4 outfits below.

I'll have to wait until tomorrow to issue the next round of the challenge chain as I'm exhausted and need to get to bed!

Outfit 1
Using Angie's Spring 2010 Must Haves list for ideas, I decided to craft my first outfit around a chambray shirt (my version of the denim shirt) and add some on-trend Spring colors. I haven't actually worn a denim shirt since I was in my early teens, so this felt like a stretch for me - but the beautiful texture and sheen of the shirt made it feel work-appropriate (especially at my more casual workplace.)

Office wear: Long chambray safari-style button-down shirt with roll-tab sleeves from Express, black pencil skirt from Express, black micro-fishnet Oroblu hose, gunmetal (pewter) Nicole heeled oxfords, black and white zebra-print belt with silver clasp from Target, salmon/coral Fossil handbag, long faux-pearl necklace tied in a knot.

Casual Wear: the same Express chambray shirt buttoned down to slightly expose white lacy Old Navy camisole, white knee-length denim Boden clamdiggers, six turquoise beaded bracelets (some with coral beads), yellow Franco Sarto crossbody handbag, pewter Clarks Brulee gladiator sandals

(This was also a challenge because I typically avoid denim-on-denim or like textures, and I don't wear bracelets at all!)

Outfit Two
I based my second outfit around a silhouette that I've been experimenting with - the boyfriend blazer - except that I still don't have a "real" boyfriend blazer. Instead, I modified my standard interview-appropriate black blazer by scrunching up the sleeves as far as they would go and wearing it open. I think I can kind of get away with the blazer looking boyfriend-like since I am ridiculously short-waisted.
I also added polka dots to both variations of this look because I love the pattern.
This outfit does look a bit dark with such a predominance of black on top and also with boots - it would work for late winter or fall, but would also work for Seattle spring days when it continues to be cold, gray, and drizzly for months.

Office Wear: Black ruffled blouse with tiny white polka dots by INC from Macy's, black Caslon blazer, skinny black patent Ann Taylor belt (knotted over blouse but under jacket), denim Ann Taylor pencil skirt, sheer black polka-dot hose from Nordstrom, brown low-heeled knee-length Rockport Ainly boots in "brandy" (a mid-tone brown), Ann Taylor necklace with turquoise and black beads

Casual Outfit: The same INC ruffled/polka dot blouse and black Caslon blazer with the sleeves scrunched up, Esprit denim leggings tucked into the same Rockport Ainly boots, soft pink floral brooch, bronze Ann Taylor beaded necklace

Because we are having dinner guests tonight & tomorrow I'll be gone until very late evening, I'll have to wait until Tuesday or Wednesday to post my response to the challenge.

HURRAH!! I get to challenge the wonderful Kari, who emerged as one of the fashion leaders and forum kindness queens within my first days of joining YLF! :)

Kari, I've designed this challenge to make sure your classy, professional style keeps moving forward and stays on trend during the spring and summer months. This may turn out to be a cakewalk for you, and if so let me know so I can up the ante. I challenge you to come up with at least two office-appropriate outfits for spring/summer that incorporate the latest seasonal styles. By this I mean that the outfits must contain one on-trend silhouette, one of-the-moment colour, and one hot pattern. You don't have to put them all in one outfit (you can even do three if you just want to showcase one thing at a time), and you can choose which trends will work best with your style. For an added twist, tell us verbally how you would make the outfit more casual if you wanted to sport these trends on the weekends, but this is entirely optional. My only other selfish request is that you describe your outfit so that I can have first-hand knowledge of exactly how hard you rocked this challenge!

When you're done, here's the list to work from to keep the chain moving:

1. april
2. ana
3. an
4. legacy of pearl
5. mamapicklejuice

the last person picked from this group will challenge sarah. use the random number generator at
http://www.random.org.

Have fun, and let me know if this needs adjustments!
