FNQ really is a different planet. It's a strange mix of 20-somethings who are travelling, a handful (like…40) people living there to support the handful of businesses and touristy things to do (a kayak place, a zip-line place, horseback rides, a walking tour, and a snorkelling tour). There's so little to do that the locals built a 9-hole golf course in the clearing on the research site. They get mad if you have to drive across their fairway. At night, at the place I stay, there is no TV, no movies, no internet. There are board games and books, and it's no fun playing a board game by yourself. I get a LOT of reading done.</p> <p>Lyn--so glad you and your daughter enjoyed reading everything! Is she starting to think about a career for herself?&nbsp;<br />If I were going to be strict about it, I really should be wearing pants. Accidentally running into some of the plants or animals with bare legs would be painful. And it would be more protective of mosquitos.<br />The kimono is actually from TopShop!&nbsp;<br />That's a great idea--to share some "matching" clothes across the miles! A great way to feel connected with those you miss. I'll have to start doing that.&nbsp;<br />I see that I forgot to attach those photos! I'll add some more here.&nbsp;</p> <p>Toronto--it's been surpassingly versatile!</p> <p>Carter--I've spent enough time in ATL, you are free to complain! I think it's hotter than here. The air finally gets water-logged here, and that limits the temperatures a little. But I'm sure you know the feeling--getting out of the shower, drying off, and when you're done, the towel is wet, the air is steamy, and you're still wet! I hate that.&nbsp;</p> <p>Photos: <br />1. The place where I'm staying. The pool never flooded. <br />2. The beach, and Cape Tribulation (pre-cyclone). Looking a little moody. Captain Cook wrecked his ship off of that outcropping of land (he crashed into the Barrier Reef). That's how the place got it's name--all his Tribulations started. Most things around here are similarly named: Mt. Sorrow, Mt. Misery, etc. <br />3. The Cape on a prettier day. &nbsp;4. The coast. It's just a pretty picture. I think it is a special item, and can surely make you feel(and look for real) chic and fabulous no matter the place and time!</p> <p>But you are lucky to have the best accessory ever, a great hair! Blonde and curly is always artsy!:-) Unfortunately I know from my own experience, thin, fine and straight would have been far more worse in those&nbsp; conditions!</p> <p>I see the &nbsp;canvas tote is&nbsp;&nbsp;a workhorse and matches perfect to a shorts and tee outfit!&nbsp; The other bag is a&nbsp;piece of love, my heart melted as I&nbsp;read about the &nbsp;daddy-daughter Man purse. I don't have a mirror, so I'll have to go with clothes laid out.&nbsp;</p> <p>My evacuation kit is the same as my fieldwork kit, so I'll answer it in that way. Yes, I did consider fashion&nbsp;in my fieldwork/evacuation kit. My typical fieldwork day is to be out in the rainforest in the morning and early afternoon. Work stops around 4pm, and my co-workers and I head back to our accommodation for a shower, wine o'clock, and dinner afterwards. Even though it's the middle of the rainforest, there are a couple places to stay, and a couple places to eat--a tiki bar, a mid-level place, and a resort-ish place. In all 3, the locals (whom we end up chatting to) are mostly outdoorsy, hippie, live-off-the-land types (all buildings up there run off generator, supply their own water, etc). A lot of the women have dreadlocks, no one wears makeup, etc. One of my tops for blending in is this kimono top (photos 1-2), which I paired this time with black shorts and a black tank top.&nbsp;</p> <p>#2. I feel like my style is a bit&nbsp;hindered when I'm in the field. It's a rainforest, so it's hot and humid--you're drenched in sweat within an hour. I'm dressing for comfort and ease of movement. I prefer shorts (though I should be in trousers), and the two pair I have right now are too big (photo 3), so I have to wear a belt with them. I didn't want to commit to buying more because after this campaign, I won't need any for a while. My tops are also generally quite threadbare. I don't care when no one sees me, but now I'm stuck in a hostel, so I care a little more. Fortunately, I've evacuated to a beach town, so I don't look terribly out of place.&nbsp;</p> <p>I'm also doing what I can to make sure that I at least FEEL good, as well. I've found myself relying on a couple of things (photo 4)&nbsp;to accomplish that:&nbsp;<br />Curling gel--my hair gets curly in high humidity, so it's easy to put some gel in my hair, let it dry and do its thing. (which it's going to do anyway)<br />Lotion: I'm pretty chewed up with mosquito bites from the rainforest, and the lotion keeps me from scratching them so they can heal up.&nbsp;<br />Baby powder: for drying out all the places that are still damp after I get out of the shower and towel off (which is basically my whole body)</p> <p>#3--What a great question! I think the most versatile thing I've got in my bag right now is a canvas tote (photo 5). I haven't had to tweak it (it's got plenty of charm, I think!), but since arriving in Australia, I've used it almost every day to carry swim gear, gym gear, food, changes of clothes, and scientific equipment! A spare tote bag is going on my permanent "to pack" list for any trip!&nbsp;</p> <p>I thought I'd also share my current handbag, as it is very functional, even if it is totally lacking in style (photos 6-7). I think it's rather ugly, but it's so useful I can't bring myself to get rid of it.&nbsp;My dad has one, and liked it so much he bought one for me (so we have matching daddy-daughter&nbsp;Man Purses). It's an REI boarding bag, and has pockets for everything. one sized for a passport, one for airline tickets, areas for pens/pencils, a big area for a book.</p> <p>Finally, a shot of where I'm staying.
