I think your hair's very pretty! I recently cut my thick wavy hair from beyond my shoulders to my chin. I love it, but I understand the indecision! I don't think I'd do any drastic with a new stylist, let her/him give you some suggestions and see where it goes. Sometimes stylists get into ruts and maybe you just need a change. How about shampoo/conditioner, have you been using the same for a while? Sometimes all I need is a clarifying shampoo to wake my hair back up!

Oooh, thanks so much for all the great tips and nice comments. I think because I've been working so hard to upgrade my wardrobe, it's only fitting to upgrade my hair too, right?

I certainly agree that your current hair goes well with your polished style; there's a part of me that is on the "if it ain't broke/don't fix" side.

But also I know how it is to just get kind of bored with what you see in the mirror every day. I think a color tweak could be a fun place to start...maybe looking into a darker, richer shade.

I will say that I have thick, wavy hair and it's more or less been your length +/- a few inches up or down for years and years. By default, that meant the middle section of my hair was pretty old and had a lot of hair dye/environmental exposure. Thinking about it that way gave me an "I see dead hair" moment, so in January I went for more of a cheekbone-to-jaw length cut.

Shook things up a little and meant that the max age of the hair on my head was only a year. ;0

Hope you end up with a cut and/or color that spices things up for you a bit (or fall back in love with your current look).

NK
I really love the length of your hair now, and you always look polished and lovely.

Most salons have hairstyle books that show a variety of short , long and med cuts.
I understand you not feeling comfortable with short hair, make sure your stylist gets that!! If you don't feel a pixie is flattering on you let your stylist know that too. With super thick curly hair , it just seems to grow in volume when it is shorter.

Best of luck...You have gotten some good advice here.

I second google. I posted a couple of threads last week about getting my hair cut; I ended up googling terms such as "shoulder length hair round face" and looking at the images that came up. I found a bunch of great photos, which I printed out and took with me, and I'm really pleased with the result.

I really like your hair NK, I always think it looks really pretty. I love the advice of asking people with great hair, where they go.

I'd add that I'm a bit of a scardey cat, so the first time I go to a new stylist, I'd probably just get a similar sort of a cut/colour just to double check that our visions "gel" and I'm happy with the results before I went ahead with any major changes. That way I could sort of have a chat about "what do you think of____ future style options for me?" while they worked on my hair. If I was happy, the second visit is probably when I'd go for a bigger change.

Have fun working out the style for you!

Google! That's where I find most of my inspiration! If I have a certain hairstyle in mind (such as my latest 'do, the inverted bob), I'll just do a google image search and make a collage of the photos I find. Otherwise, I'm sure there are websites with a bunch of different hairstyles - again, just google it! :P

Another idea is to try an online makeover site. My favorite is http://www.taaz.com. You just have to upload a photo of your head with your hair pulled back, and you can go to town with different hairstyles, makeup, etc. I have waaay too much fun on that site.

NK- they have magazines o fjust of hairstyle photos. There are a bunch of different ones if you go to a large bookstore (Barnes and Noble, etc) and look, but even the grocery store and Target has some.

Oooh, great tips! Thanks!

So another question, where do I find photos of haircuts to take in with me?

I don't have any fashion type magazines, and usually those don't have great photos of haircuts anyhow, from my experience.

Do I find something online and print it out? Where do I even start looking?

I agree with the others that your hair currently looks very nice. If you want to try and freshen up your look you might try either some subtle highlights or a new color. I think the length is nice and frames your face in a flattering way.

As for stylists, I went with a friend's recommendation because I loved her hair. I then went to their website and found out more about the salon. You can also use Yelp to find a salon. Calling ahead for pricing is certainly acceptable. Many salons have different "levels" of stylists so prices will vary on the stylist. For sticker shock, I have gone to the $7 haircut places my entire life but decided I was tired of looking just OK so I went to my new salon and walked out $300 poorer but I looked fabulous. It hurts to pay the price but I have to do my hair daily and look at it so it works out in the long run.

NK, you should definitely ask about prices ahead of time. If I were you, I'd call several places (or check their websites) and get a feel for how much a haircut costs in your area.

As far as going short, it really depends on your risk tolerance. If you're going to a brand new salon and working with someone you don't know that well, that's a bit of a risk because you may end up with a short haircut that you're not too happy with. Personally, I'd probably hunt around for a stylist you're comfortable with, get a trim or or some layers or have them clean up your current length a little. Then, when you find someone you like, think about going shorter if you still want to. Or, by then, maybe you'd have gotten past the awkward length stage and you'll want to keep your hair longer for a while.

Something else I've found useful over the years is to really figure out what you want, and how to effectively communicate that to the stylist. When I've gone into a stylist and not been very specific with them about what I want, I find the resulting cut isn't very satisfactory. But if I take a photo, and I'm able to say things like, "I really like how much texture there is in this cut," or "What I really like about this is how soft it is, it's romantic. I like the shorter layers around her face, but the longer layers in the back," or "I like the curls," etcetera, then my cuts are usually a lot more successful. I mention that because it's a good way to figure out whether a stylist is really right for you from the get go. If I ask for something soft and curly and I have a photo example, and the stylist gives me something that's spiky and edgy, well, then I know they just aren't listening to me and to look elsewhere. I can find a good stylist faster that way. Does that make sense?

Good luck! Finding a good stylist is a lot of work, but it's definitely worth it.

A resounding yes!

I've had some doosies. Years ago I had a pixie cut against my will that was so short, I couldn't even comb it down and I refused to leave the house for 3 days! As much as I love the look of short hair on others, it's just not flattering to me and I have flashbacks to when I was a little child and sat in a dark closet crying with a snow hat on after getting a 'boy cut'. I have some serious hair issues. :(

The texture has changed quite a bit over the years. It's no longer curly like it used to be, but it's not straight either. Some days, it's plenty wavy, and others it can barely take a curl.

I can't remember the last time I really LOVED it.

Even if I do grow it out, I'm not sure what kind of a style I'm looking for and I don't want to get into a rut of wearing it in a ponytail everyday.

Yes, Sarah, I'm in an area where I have lots of options. The thing is, the woman I've been going to for years has a salon in her house and it's just a couple of miles from my house. I've been going to her for the low cost and the convenience. (She totally works around my schedule, evenings, weekends, whatever.) She used to work in a high end salon in Scottsdale but now does well out of her own house.

After paying so little for all these years I KNOW I'm in for some real sticker shock when I go to an actual salon. I'm such a cheapskate!

FWIW, I have really been liking your hair lately.
But yes, finding a good hairdresser ranks right up there with finding your soul mate, or a great pair of jeans ;-)
I agree with Khris... anytime you see someone with similar hair as yours and/or a great cut, ask them where they get it done. To me, it is the ultimate compliment when a stranger asks where I get my hair done.

I agree. It is so nice to leave all the questions, doubting, and what not in the hands of my very capable stylist.

Natalie- I think that finding a good hair dresser is harder than finding a good friend (but just as rewarding)! It took me 5 years to find someone that I really like after we moved here.
I really think the best way to find a good hairdresser for you is to start looking at people's hair. When you see someone who has a similar texture to you, and a cut that you like- ask them who does their hair.

After my last haircut a couple of months ago I realized it was time to break up with my hairdresser. I've been going to her for at least 5 years now, and I think she's just not understanding me anymore. This last time she hacked off my bangs before I could tell her I'd been trying to grow them out. The time before she blurted out something about a mutual friend we have that I'm quite sure the other woman would not have wanted anyone to know about. The cuts and color just never seem right anymore. I think it's time for me to move on. :(

My hair is currently that awkward length that's not really long enough to do anything with, and not short enough to look polished. And I can't figure out whether to grow it out or chop it off.

On the one hand, I've worn it shorter for years and would love to try and grow it out again. I've had long hair before and I think it looked fairly nice. I also feel like I'm getting so close, why chop it off now?

On the other hand, I know it can look more polished when it's shorter, and part of me wonders if I'm getting too old for longer hair.

(Oh boy, that's a whole different thread, I know!)

I have crazy thick wavy hair that I think can look shaggy and overwhelming. I keep reminding myself that most of the women on television with pretty long hair have most likely had it styled by a professional, and it doesn't look that nice all the time.

I worry that I'm buying into the idea that longer hair is better, or still having hair issues from all the really bad haircuts I've had in the past.

But then, I often see women around town with bad looking long hair and want to run home and schedule an appointment to get a sophisticated cut right away.

So really, I have two issues, finding a new stylist when it seems like everyone I know goes to the same two women already, and trying to decide whether to chop or not.

<sigh>

Any advice?
