I wish I could look in my closet and feel bliss! lol That's wonderful you have an organized closet now! You have the perfect figure for over the knee boots and they look great on you. That pic with those and your black dress is really smashing! (fab).... I don't think they look good on most women, for one thing they're way too trendy, and many women just follow trends without bothering to even think, "does this look good on me"? But they look great on you! Nice styling of your outfits~

Joy, thank you and good luck with your goal! I'm imagining your closet as a beautiful rainbow.

Emily K, I'm jealous that you're in Angie's territory! I suspect that the best stylists (Angie most definitely included, based on the way she nurtures this very positive and kind community) are at least as much therapist as fashion expert.

The Cat, Style Fan, Penny, and Sal, thank you!

Bijou, rock that leather jacket! We're cool enough to actually wear our stuff! (Okay, to be honest, I also have a leather jacket I've barely worn for the same reason, so I'll be right there with you on that goal.)

cindysmith, thank you! I totally lucked out on closet space in this place. Now the goal is to not stuff it full again...

Elizabeth P, aw, thank you! Rambling out these responses has been helping me think through things, and I'm thrilled that it's been useful for you. YES on grabbing the generic items when in a hurry or tired or down; I did that too (because it seemed easier, or maybe because it felt like I was hiding), and then I felt blah... which didn't help with the tired feeling. Those are the days when I most need my clothing to act as armor while I regain my footing. Now that I don't have those generic things to fall back on, I almost have to dress in a way that makes me feel good.

Well, my brain feels like a Christmas tree, so many light bulbs in this post!

I love that you gave your self permission to hire someone to help you. I agree totally that sometimes you can do things yourself, but a professional is worth the expense. Like a cleaner :) Your closet looks great, and your outfits are killer.

One of the light bulbs:
Since I got rid of a lot of more generic-feeling items, my wardrobe has
been... boiled down to a purer essence, maybe? It now consists pretty
much entirely of my absolute favorites and the solid supporting acts
that work with them.

THIS is what I need to do. I feel in the last few months I've distilled my style down a bit more, and yet I still have that "generic" clutter. And generic is what gets grabbed when in a hurry, or when I'm tired.

I'm bookmarking this, as your responses are as insightful as your initial post. Thank you for sharing!

Srah, congratulations, what a great way to start 2018 personally and in your wardrobe. I can totally relate to having items that you think are 'too cool', I have a leather jacket that fits perfectly and yet I don't wear it enough. That will have to be something that I fix in 2018.

Congratulations on your accomplishment and ability to let things go. Your closet looks wonderful and a peaceful place. I like the idea of giving scarves their own hangars. Currently my clothes are hung by color, then by type. Scarves the will be worn with that color are all on one hangar. My goal is now to reduce my wardrobe and scarf collection so each get a hangar in their color area.

Katerina, thanks! So far that trick is working for me... I hope it works for you too if you try it.

Yay, Greyscale! I'm glad we've both hit a good place wardrobe-wise. I actually found all my consignment items at the Real Real; it's such a great site! The stylist recommended also checking out Poshmark... I like that the Real Real is a central repository that inspects everything and writes detailed condition notes, but I may give Poshmark a try.

La Belle Demimondaine, thank you! I'll probably have a more accurate answer when I've lived with it longer, but so far, I'd say yes. Since I got rid of a lot of more generic-feeling items, my wardrobe has been... boiled down to a purer essence, maybe? It now consists pretty much entirely of my absolute favorites and the solid supporting acts that work with them. And yet, it's still an embarrassment of riches in my closet, even pared down... I have more than enough.

High five! I'm also feeling really excited about my wardrobe at the end of the year. It's time for another small cull, but having everything on racks in my room (by necessity) does keep me honest about what's worth a hanger.

I imagine you've found the Real Real for high quality consignment? Shopping in person is more fun but sometimes I've stalked something when it's new in stores and then bought it on that site used.

What an interesting post!

I really like your idea about relegating some clothes to a gear-drawer and choosing casual outfits from the ”real clothes closet” in order to use the nice casual clothes more often. I should do the same thing. Have not really thought about it this way before.

fashiontern and Janet, I found the stylist through the Style at a Certain Age blog (which I probably discovered from here). The blogger, Beth, interviewed the lead stylist from a small company of stylists, and she seemed wise, approachable, of excellent taste... and local. I researched the company and booked the appointment with one of their associate stylists (after stalking some of her blog posts and deciding that I liked her taste and voice). Janet, to your point about needing someone who gets you... yes, absolutely! One of the things I liked about this group of stylists is that they talked (in blog posts and YouTube videos) about the importance of checking their own styles at the door and getting a grasp on their clients' tastes and lives. I really enjoyed the experience; she was nonjudgmental and gentle but honest and straightforward... if something was dated or not my best color or worn out, she called it. And if I really loved something anyway, it could stay, of course... but I didn't feel the need to push back on much at all. Usually I I found I was relieved to have "permission" to let things go (like a lot of my button up shirts). She also helped me see how to use some pieces that I liked but didn't know what to do with. I *almost* let an amazing Helmut Lang cropped tuxedo blazer go after zero wears because it felt too cool for me, but she forbade me from getting rid of it. ;) I wore it to work this casual Friday with jeans and absolutely loved it... I think it'll become a workhorse.

fashiontern, I haven't missed anything from the cull so far. I grew up moving frequently (every 3 months to 3 years, but averaged out to about once a year through high school), so getting rid of things is weirdly therapeutic and I rarely miss them when they're gone. But sometimes it helps to have an impartial eye to let them go. I was also pretty annoyed with the tiered hangers and much prefer having them hung individually; I couldn't see all my scarves well before, and they got tangled up together if I wasn't very careful when I put them back. I tend to forget about things if I don't see them, so I like having my entire non-gear wardrobe (all seasons in my closets at once) spread out and visible.

I figure we can't all be experts on everything, so sometimes it makes sense to pay someone to share their time and talent. Even if it's something I could do solo with effort, sometimes it saves time and money in the long run to learn from someone who's devoted themselves to a topic. Also helps to get an opinion that's removed from the situation and doesn't share my emotions and biases and baggage.

Wow, that’s great!

I wish Angie were on the opposite coast too. Sometimes I really think I could use a firm impartial hand when it comes to closet editing. I’m too emotional around my wardrobe acquisitions. I would love to hire a stylist to help me do what you did, but I feel like it’s imprtant to find one who “gets you.” How did you find your stylist and how did you like the whole experience?

That sounds amazing! How did you find the stylist, and are there any decisions you made that day that you regret?

I’m surprised about the hangers. Even when I’ve had room for individual hangers, I’ve preferred the multiples as an organizing tool. Sometimes that’s by size, but for some items that are relatively forgiving about sizes, and for everything that fits when I have a lot of that fits, I put jeans on one hanger, work pants on another, khakis on a third, etc. If you also used them as organization, I’m curious to hear how you’ll feel about not having that in a few weeks.

Interesting that you connect this with hiring a financial analyst as another professional to help you get a handle on aspects of your life. I didn’t realize other people thought that way too.

Sterling, your analysis posts have definitely helped me get here! As the stylist talked about the third piece, I was thinking of your thoughtful musings on that topic, which had already helped me start thinking on those lines.

Thank you, RobinF! I can't believe I've ignored that moto vest for so long.

Cardiff girl, thank you! Definitely money well spent, and I think it'll save me some mistakes down the road.

Runcarla, it was so useful to be able to borrow a trained professional eye... she saw things I never would have on my own. And it was so much easier to let things go when she looked at it measuringly and said, "I think we can do better." (Which is a lovely gentle way of saying, "Um, how about no?" )

Meredith, we'll both go down that goal road in 2018! The boots are pretty comfortable... it's a higher heel than I routinely wear, but the block heel makes it very walkable/standable (it's a rather oversized block heel from the side, as a warning... makes a bit of a statement). The sole is okay but on the hard side; I have some extra space in mine, so I may put in a gel insert. Another girl actually wore the same boots to the party, but she scrunched hers down to mid-calf height, which also worked and was something I wouldn't have thought of.
