I'm glad you're keeping the Tadashi! And those earrings are beautiful...no need to apologize for them! Almost all colored stones are enhanced or treated in some way.

New earrings. It used to be that we could find great stuff on sale at the end of a cruise, but since the world economy went down, that hasn't been the case. The stones in these earrings were not so great, but the jewelers have a technique where they drill into the stone and scrape out the flaws and spots and then replace it with a filler substance. If these had been "real" rubies we wouldn't be able to afford them and the cruise store wouldn't bother carrying them.

This morning I tried on the Tadashi dress and showed it to hubby, who gave it enthusiastic reviews and insisted I buy it whether I wear it to the wedding or not.

I reread SIL's email about us being in the photos and such and how fabulous we will all look in black, so I think she'd prefer the Tadashi.

The dress fit even better today. Another important factor: My new, rarely worn ruby and diamond earrings will go well with the all black dress. We bought them on a cruise a year ago. (Talk about buying stuff for your fantasy life. They weren't right for the green dress.)

The Tadashi is much lighter weight and will be easier to pack. I'm pretty sure I will wear it to the October wedding as well.

Thanks for all of your input. It does help to have a board of available fashion advisers to advise. I'll go see if I can get a decent photo of the earrings.

Love #1 on you. The other one looks good but you sound uncomfortable talking about it. Whatever you do, skip the Spanx (an invention of the devil)..

Have fun! It should be a great wedding.

I love both! The first dress is elegant and you look comfortable in it. The second one is pretty and I love the sheer panels, but if you are not OK with that, then go with the first one. But Tadashi dresses are so flattering, especially for women of a certain age...up to date and no frump in sight. By the way, you'll love Newport...and that resort is beautiful in real life.

Wow that first dress looks amazing on you. Its definately red carpet material. The bride did request black. I would think that meant all black. The second dress is killer too. I love the sheerness of it. . No spanx.
Looking forward to those pictures.

Wow, love the 2 ladies dancing, and you too look flamboyant and funloving here:-). Nr. 1 so elegant! Tadashy dress is also beautiful, but I would wear a long tan A line (satin) underskirt under it for more modesty, esp. for a wedding. for ex. a New Years Eve it's other than that, there I would go surely bare legs under:-).

That first dress stopped me short. It is elegant, classic, interesting and your wear it beautifully. Not boring it all. If you are feeling that you need to offset the sheer aspects of dress 2, then perhaps it isn't calling your name. I have rarely landed in an optimal place when I have to make accommodations for tensions about fundamental aspects of a garment. (Not that I haven't tried.)

Enjoy the wedding.

Both options are lovely. I personally think the blush and black one is a bit more elegant and weddingy. It doesn't say 'sedate' to me -- more red carpet chic. I feel that dress could hold its own no matter how other guests are dressed. however, if the bride asked you to wear black, do you think she means all black? If so, the TS dress is perfectly wedding appropriate. I like Isis's suggestion to ask the bride's preference if you can. You are stand ins for her parents, and most brides are aware what what their Mums will be wearing.

The wedding is at 6 pm at Belle Mer. It looks like an elegant resort, from what I see on the website. http://www.longwoodevents.com/.....-mer.shtml

SIL moved to LA from SF about 5 years ago and then to NY and I haven't seen her since, although DH saw her at a funeral last year. I suspect there will be many fashion and artsy people there (not from this side of the family.) This is why the black dress attracts me. I wonder if the blush is a bit too sedate.

I wouldn't hesitate to wear the black dress on a cruise, but then most of the time I don't know many people on cruises. I could also wear it to the fall wedding, #3.

JAileen, I won't wear the Spanx--it doesn't seem to make much difference. This dress fits almost like a girdle through the body.

I'll try it on for DH when he gets home.

tulle, I'm sure it will be another fun wedding. This time I intend to remember to pull out my camera and take some photos.

We haven't met her partner, but SIL says they are "a bunch of doctors and lawyers."

I think either dress would look very nice. Don't wear spanx. Just have a nice time. I'm glad you are going to the wedding. The maid of honor at my wedding got married more than ten years ago at a SS wedding in Toronto. My mother and I both attended the wedding. She was like a sister to me, growing up. I was glad to be there.

Wow! What beautiful pictures from last year's wedding!

The blush dress is very elegant, especially from the back. Stunning! I bet it moves beautifully when you are walking.

What is the setting and what time of day will the festivities happen? The black dress, maybe because of the color, reads more formal to me.
Does the sheerness of the black lace on the thigh bother you? What happens if you raise your arms, like when you are dancing? Does it ride up? You mention you were raised to be a modest dresser. I think it looks fine, but if you are not comfortable it will not work.

Because you look gorgeous in both of these dresses it is a tough call. Such a problem to have. :)

Next up is wedding #2 in Newport, R.I. We will substitute for the bride's deceased parents. DH was 17 1/2 when his folks adopted her, and soon left for college. She's a talented woman and we have been supportive of her through difficult times. Several family members will make the trip, but others frown on SS marriage.

She's a fashion designer. I'm sure she's at Fashion Week right now. I would like to wear something a bit fashion forward. She's asked us to wear black and DH (who will escort her down the aisle) to wear his tux. I've ordered and returned several dresses, looked through store racks and am not happy so far. Now I'm tired and don't want to do more shopping, so it is coming down to two choices: A Tadashi Shoji pin tucked dress that just arrived, or the dress I wore to last year's wedding.

Did I mention none of us are getting younger? I get more egg-shaped and despite lots of exercises my arms aren't in the Jane Fonda league. I do occasionally frequent the "I'll Wear What I Want!" website to get inspired. As you saw with my green dress for last wedding, I'm not afraid of above the knee, but with hose.

With either of these dresses I will have to wear my taller Paul Green sandals, the ones that gave me horrible blisters last year. I will be prepared this year. I have a little sheer cardi if it is chilly, or else a cute black jacket I can wear.

New dress issues--fits really well and is just right with PG sandals, but sheer from an inch above my finger tips to knees. I have a black silk slip that is too short to hid the sheerness, I have black DKNY body shaper that is too long and would show. I could wear black long Spanx or leggings to below the knee, or just let my legs show through. Nee your thoughts. I was raised to be a fairly modest dresser.

I was concerned about black bra straps showing through lace until I looked about SIL's dress below.

I can't zip it up all the way myself. Forgive no makeup and unwashed hair (but you can see how the gray is growing out. 4 months since last highlighting and will do no more.)

Photos 1-2: 2014 dress front and back. Wore wrong bra and discovered that too late. Would remember this time.

3: Tadashi dress from Nordstrom now out of stock unless I return it.

Next few photos me in dress front, back, sides with and without DKNY body shaper.

Last three: SIL at son's wedding: with me, dancing with her mom, and her expensive Sergio Rossi shoes. As you can see, she is fun-loving and flamboyant.

Need advice--which one?
Is there too much blush in 2014?
