Beth, we must have cross posted last night, then I took off for bed! Yes, I hope to feel at ease and myself in what I wear ;-) Good idea of pics and from all angles, no surprises afterwards IYKWIM!

Vix & Mander - thanks for the reassurance that's okay to look overdressed. And thanks, Vix - I dug out a pewter leather tote that I think looks good and not too serious.

Diana - I might take you up on wearing the slingbacks . . .! And I'm seeing that the white jacket should 'wait'. Angie's 'peace with the crease' comes to mind.

Never too late, BJ :-) Fitting in - yes, that's exactly what gets me wondering about the serious conservative look. A tricky balance for sure!

Denise - white jacket out - duly noted ;-) The red bag is actually an ipad case, and I think I'll tuck it in y silver tote today for personal things.

ha, Lyn - good reasoning - start by eliminating :-)

Shevia - thanks! I hope you'll be equally approving of my latest outfit too!

My favorite is 8, perhaps with the slingback shoes. IMHO it's normal to be overdressed compared to other people at an interview, but it's also somewhat expected of the candidate. I struggled with this at an interview in the past -- I know that in my field people tend to be very casual, but since it was an interview I wore a suit. The people who did the interview were dressed for fieldwork in fleeces and hiking boots but a joke was made, and it was clear that they understood and expected that I would dress differently for the interview versus the actual day-to-day job.

Love #1, do you have a black jacket that would go with it? And I like the clutch from #2 with the kitten heels in #1. I don't feel the white jacket is right for an interview, it feels more business casual. I like 5 through 9 as well, they are better than 1 if you feel the firm is more conservative.

Too late but i love #3 but i would wear the shoes and purse from #1

Strikes the right note of respect and respectability for a financial concern, but a smidge less buttoned up with a nod to the nonprofit status.

Speaking for myself, i would be uncomfortable if i was over the top over dressed for the office, especially if it's a small office. I would want them to be able to see me fitting into the environment.

#8 is a safe choice, very conservative. I don't know the vibe of the company, obviously (you said both "financial", which suggests conservative, and "nonprofit", which suggests a little more relaxed/creative). If you think creative is ok, I like the first outfit too, but I think I'd go with the dark jacket as it reads more professional. I'd save the white one for actually working there once you get the job! (eta: not because of the color, but because of the fabric. I love linen but it reads casual and you don't want the creasing taken the wrong way.)

I think sling backs are fine. They're the only pumps that stay on my feet without a strap so I've worn them to interviews. Wedges are fine too, So long as the wedge part isn't something casual like cork.

Hi MNSara --

Good luck tomorrow!

To answer your general questions:

1) No, I've never taken a purse to an interview -- just a leather tote to tuck CV, notepad, and/or laptop (for show and tell) plus personal items OR a leather portfolio thing that fits CV and legal pad (with phone/etc left in car).

2) I'm always fairly to very overdressed compared to interviewers. Best was when I was in a skirt suit and two interviewers were in jeans and down vests; jokes were made. Never seemed to make a difference as to whether I got the job or not. ;)

I also run in circles where the average worker is in jeans and the candidates do very nice business casual. As an interviewer I've seen a range among the women's outfits (I think I posted some examples here).

Onto you!

Warm-weather interviewing is such a PITA, ha.

I think unless it's a very conservative industry *and* company or one that embraces creativity/individuality it's better to nod to the heat with colors etc. while still staying ~ fairly ~ sedate. For that reason, I vote for 3-4 and 15-16. I'd probably pick the more conservative shoe (the closed toe/back). Polished but approachable!

sarah - if I knew the place were casual, I'd do #1 in a heartbeat!
In the storm, we were lucky - no power loss at all! Just 2.8 inches of rain in the hour, then another 1.25 inches on the next night. We drove home through it Friday evening, and it was WILD!! My daughter lives between Uptown and downtown, and they lost so many trees, and the power outages were widespread.

Best Wishes, Sara!

I think #8 is great, and it can take a little more color in accessories (a necklace, perhaps), if you have something that works.

I'd like to suggest that you take a couple of photos before the interview --- and look at the camera the way you would look at an interviewer to get a job. You're looking unsure in these photos, which is natural given the importance of the event. In the theater they teach us to "own" our costumes. To wear them about and create a character with them --- to practice in the mirror while wearing them and take photos of every costume and prop. Perhaps this would help you use the conservative outfit to build a "character," a version of you, for your interview?

(P.S. I also adore #1!)

I'm not sure, Sara. I would try it. I know for me, sometimes high contrast is too much with my low contrast colouring, and sometimes it seems to bring me to life. So...it just depends. I think it is working really well for you in the patterned blouse in #1, so I don't see why it couldn't with the dress/ jacket combo. And brights could sort of tie it all together? I don't know...only a pic will say for sure.

Good thoughts, Suz - do you think the high contrast black dress with the cream linen jacket looks purposeful enough? I wonder if the bright color accessories would add too much then.

ETA: I did go to a different location of their offices to look around and everyone was very casual. Don't know exactly about my location, but I'd be fine for day-to-day wear. It's just this darn interview dilemma.

#8 and #9 look best for the interview. Perfect. I love #1 too - and add a jacket for the interview.

GOOD LUCK!!

I am useless. I am so taken with #1 that I can't see anything else. Is it really not appropriate because of the trend factor? I am an igoramus. It looks sharp, cool. smart to me. I would hire you if you were wearing that. You look bright, focused, with it, and a bit fun. Isn't that the kind of person we all want to work with?

You could also add the white jacket to it if a jacket is required, which I can understand it might be.

However, if the company is conservative, #9 makes sense to me. For some reason, much as I adore dots, they read a bit "girlish" to my sense for an interview. Or maybe it's the dots combined with the slight A-line.

Good luck, Sara! I hope it is everything you are wishing for!

Without reading the responses, I also chose #8. An interview is your time to look conservative and business like. I like the cut of these items. You could even mix in color here while keeping this silhouette.

Thanks, Una and Ceit - Yes, I think #8 is very safe and quite conservative. I'm just worried these people might all be in polo shirts and khakis!

I know common advice is 'better to be overdressed than under dressed', but has anyone ever encountered that -- being way overdressed for the position? Is that off putting to the interviewers?

First off, good luck!

I would say wear something that you feel comfortable in, and aren't worrying that you might have to take your jacket off and can't etc.

8 appeals to me the most!

8 & 9 catch my eye right away as proper/conservative interview wear, but what kind of company is it? I'm not sure outfit 1 is right, because of the trend factor of the pieces. And as you know, I struggle with white, so I'll leave the appropriateness factor to others there.

ETA: I must have been ruminating in my sleep because I woke up and put this together. It's based on all your awesome input and ideas, and I will be totally at ease in it. (except for worried about sweating. Silk can feel like a plastic bag sometimes!)

Pics 17-18 - jacket can come off - yay! carrying a pewter tote, like Vix recommended.
Pic 19 - do I dare use my new reading glasses? I don't want my cheaters to shout "old, clueless lady here" ;-)

Interviewing tomorrow, and I'm so clueless. I haven't done this formally since maybe the late 80s!! (I think I just fall into my jobs)

I researched old YLF threads for advice, but my quandary is that I don't even know how they dress at this place :-( and I'm not sure how 'professional' this position is - it's only part time, and it could be one step above schlepping mail around the company, but I don't care -- the more I research this (non-profit, financial) organization, the more I WANT TO WORK THERE. ( Plus, we'd really like to get an employer to pay for healthcare instead of us :-\ )

So, I'd love to hear your take on interviewing today, which (if any) outfit looks best to you, and especially if you explain why. I'm all ears :-)

On to the choices (sorry so pic heavy. I must learn an easy way to do collages):
1-4 go together - just various shoes and purses (do you even carry a purse to an interview?)
5-6 - a halter sweater underneath, so the jacket cannot come off!
7-9 are three different dress/jacket combos
10-12 sleeveless dress underneath - can jacket be removed?
13-16 skirt combo with top tucked and untucked, and shoe choices.

It is supposed to be 90F here tomorrow!

Are slingbacks bad to wear for interviews? What about wedges?

I went looking for interview wear, but instead found two cute pair of pointy toe, low heels - hopefully for future work wear :-)

Thank you oh, so much for your help! YLF women are the source of mucho wisdom!!
