You know, MaryK, I definitely thought about you as was I was writing. My thought was you perhaps fall on the visionary side of the house when it comes to leadership. I wonder if perhaps you don't awe, dazzle, and inspire with your insight and skill.

I'm not sure I agree with rachylou that in order to command respect you have to dress simply and in plain colors. In my work environment, the junior lawyers tend to dress conservatively -- navy or gray skirt suits, plain pumps, etc. They follow the conservative dress code because they are trying to fit in, to not make waves, to be noticed for their work rather than their clothing, etc.

Well. You all have seen how I dress, and it's not like that. I wear the business components of skirt, blazer, and heels, but I wear bright colors, I wear animal prints to work, I wear high heels in bright colors, and I can't remember the last time I wore a matching suit (oh, wait, yes I can!). I feel like I am demonstrating my power by not being bound by the fashion rules that apply to the junior people. And I have no trouble commanding respect at the office!

ETA: My knees look like yours, Elle, and I still bare 'em!

Rachy I'm still awake googling shoes for this darned outdoor wedding. I haven't found any. Thanks for responding to me. I thought you meant something along these lines and wanted to know more. I don't work for anyone so it is less of an issue for me but appropriate dressing is important to me. I know people say be yourself, don't follow rules, don't care what others think, and to a degree I agree but I also think don't be surprised that people use ones appearance as a way of interpreting who they are. I would like to appear as I am, not as someone else, or to dress as I want others to see me.

Rachy what kind of clothes would command respect & what do you mean
by respect? I have so much to learn about being a middle aged person
lol.

It doesn't help when people tell you 40 is the new 20. But, lol, it has been one of my goals in life to figure out what "senior management" does (and/or should do) and why some people get promoted and some don't (in companies one approves of). I feel I'm starting to make some real headway in this endeavour. My "senior management", btw, does not include founders and visionaries and so forth. Or Wall St. holy rollers. I'm talking about the steady folks that keep things going day in and day out, not people who make the great leaps forward (or sell you the Brooklyn Bridge twice). This is because that has a very different value.

Yes, I'm seriously serious about this.

Anyways, I think a couple of thoughts/observations. One is people who want to command respect tend to wear pretty plain, simple clothes. I think one of their purposes is to spread calm and be the antidote to panic. "Keep Calm and Carry On." They don't rile. They also wear the signifiers of authority - blazers, low pumps, that sort of thing. Of course, this would be in an office setting. In something like the bakery where I work it's different. But not totally different. The big boss dresses plain. The managers and leads are not the ones wearing the pink sneakers, low cut babydoll tops, and who is that guy who puts all the "tattoo designs" on shirts and kicks?

Low flash, always a big wash of solid colour to ground things...

Thanks everyone. It isnt urgent, I'm not sure how it ended up in that category. Is that what happens when posting from iphone app?

I've gven up shortter dresses but knee length dresses often hit at top of knee like this one & if it is hot I stll wear shorts.

Ceit I take it with the respect intended I only started paying attention to the rules since joining YLF. I'm not sure how much attention I should give to the age appropriate ones but a lot of people think showing too much leg is trying to look young.

Elle, I say this with the utmost respect --- I think you need to decide what feels comfortable to you first before racing around trying to follow arbitrary "rules".

My knees have been wrinkly since I was 20 years old. My 4 year old daughter has cellulite (and she is not overweight).

Elle, all I see are very pretty legs! Please show them off.

I'm chuckling at (and with) Janet's comment. Yep, I also have cellulite
pretty much down to my knees and used to be very self-conscious about
it. However, the older I get, the less I obsess about hiding it. Yes, I
have cellulite, have had it since my teens, and will always have it.
It's just the way my body is, and I am not going to wear a burka just to
avoid offending somebody's sensibilities. My legs are strong and could
out-squat anybody, so why should I be ashamed of them? As long as one
is dressed appropriately for the occasion, there is no need to cover up
some imperceptible flaws. Or even perceptible ones, for that matter.

I say don't fret it. If I hid my wrinkly knees all the time, I'd never wear shorts or a swimsuit, and barely any dresses.

Um, and my cellulite goes down to the insides of my knees and also adorns my upper arms. Yes, I am a mess, but it's 95 degrees, and I'm darned if I'm going to wear long sleeves. I've said it before, but anyone who is offended by the sight of my cellulite simply needs to look away. On my body it's inescapable. Wrinkles too.

Sigh. I just keep repeating, I love my body, I love my body.

I don't see any wrinkly knees, Elle. But anyways, I think it comes down to wanting respect or wanting to be seen as fun. And when you're old, everyone will be more comfortable if you'd like to be respected. So, it's like, I can show my old lady knees but also I have to be wearing something that says, respect your elders! That's what I think.

I say do not worry about them. Like elbows, they are meant to bend and are bound to get a little wrinkly.

Especially in high heels but even without. Is it time to start hiding them with longer skirts & shorts past knee? Not good resolution so you can't see how bad they are. My iPhone camera is supposed to have more MP than my camera so this is best. Maybe zooming doesnt help.

Yay hide

Nay OK to show
