I see moodiness in terms of the palette of an outfit. So when I think of moody artwork, I think Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt. A dark sombre palette with some light and lots of shadow. Usually conveying drama, passion, sensuality, seriousness. Or mystery as Nomad says. I’m attracted to that look in art, so I’m attracted to it in fashion also. So I tend to gravitate towards darker colours and a muted palette. </p> <p>Also I think some patterns can be moodier than others. Dark florals are moody. A baroque style mosaic can be moody. But dots and stripes not so much. </p> <p>Summer makes it hard to do a moody look because I become more attracted to light colours and I think it’s hard to do light and bright colours in a moody way.</p> <p>Janet might have more to say on this as a photographer. </p> <p>I love the top you posted Nomad. And yes to Zaeobi’s suggestion about sheer fabrics. But sometimes these fabrics are only appropriate for night time wear for me in summer. I struggle with anything other than cotton and linen in the heat of the day. A cotton cut out top is something I’ve been thinking about. I actually had one on order before Xmas but the retailer cancelled my order due to supply chain problems. I like the drama they add. </p> <p>Suntiger, I love that top you got from BR. (And I want to hear Brooklyn's answer, too, because her style is amazing.) You're right that it's usually not a good thing when describing a person, so I went to the Oxford Dictionary out of curiosity to see if there was an alternate definition that would apply, and it delivered: "giving an impression of melancholy or mystery."</p> <p>To me, moodiness in an outfit (or art, or home decor) is... perhaps a sense of drama but not in a loud way (which is also a pretty vague definition but the best I've got right now), and usually dark or shadowed or obscured. I think Zaeobi's suggestion of translucent/sheer fabrics is spot on for creating some mystery while being better for warm temps.
