Too funny Vicki! Can you believe I started this thread more than 3 years ago when we were on vacation in Hawaii? Yes the outfits are a bit dated for my style--and luckily I've learned from Angie and all the fabbers how to dress my long neck and torso!

I love collars and button fronts and I like my torso better if I DON'T wear a column of color. Unless it's a dress, and then I prefer a shirt waist or one with a separate bodice and skirt.

Thanks everyone for your comments!

I haven't read the replies so apologies if this is repetitive. I think your neck (& the rest of you) looks lovely. The only top I wasn't so sure about was #4, but that's because it looks big on you rather than your neck being the problem. I really like how you have filled in the neckline with a necklace too.

I wonder if a really high cut leg and/or horizontal features on a one piece would make any difference. I've got a short torso, tho, and have to say I look best in a one piece. So maybe it wouldn't be enough...

It's good to see you with different neck lines! I really like #4 on you. You have a gorgeous, elegant neck. I smiled at photo 6 because I almost bought that same shirt! I too have similar proportions and I can see the appeal of such a different cut and collar. I think this style is different, but suits you very well and would look good with your hair up. You should experiment with other shirts with this type of collar, some are better than others. I don't like #7, it's too girlie girl and doesn't do justice to your natural elegance. Of course #1,2,3 are sensational.

Claire, I read your post yesterday but couldn't get time to respond. Our bodies are similar in several ways and Angie once pointed out that it would be best for the top to hit near the neck point. When it is so hot in the summer, the open necklines are very inviting even if not flattering. An open neckline like some of those you have posted can be helped by wearing a string of beads or pearls (or scarf) that does lay where neck meets shoulder. I haven't read all the answers, but it looks like boatnecks have been suggested and I like them for a change. Scarves are a no brainer and can work in the summer if they are small or thin and preferably cotton. I even dampen them on really hot days for extra cooling.

I can't add much more -- lots of good replies here -- except to say that you are simply stunning, and I think your long neck is graceful and swan-like, not gawky.

I don't have any comments on proportions, just that you look gorgeous as usual! Funny thing is that I just saw top 4 and 6 at Winners the other day and actually tried on #6 this week! I really like 4 on you, it would look awful on me. #6 didn't work on me either. The fabric is really pretty, though. Anyway, I hope you are having a great time in Hawaii!

Ha! The main reason I'm following along with this post, Claire, is because I need to do everything you shouldn't! To put it another way, I'd like to swap problems, please. :-p

I love how thoughtfully you analyse fit and proportion. I never manage this, but since Parsley brought up Audrey Hepburn, I think your neck needs...
(1) a collared boatneck, like the first photo on this page (which links to nada!) https://www.google.co.in/searc......r_cp.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1280&bih=685&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=N_diT4O0JMbYrQeTzqy9Bw
or an embellished one: http://www.dressty.com/grey-ru.....-new-york/
(b) a nice, cool metal collar in summer! I mean, jewellery to fill in the gap, like so (second phot below the video): http://denisebrain.blogspot.in.....pburn.html
(c) while in Hawaii, wear a lei! (I'm kidding, I'm kidding!)

You don't wear earrings very much, right? Because oversized hoops or chandeliers would work to marry head and shoulder too.

Parsley, don't worry I didn't take it that way at all. And you are absolutely right anyway.

Christianne, thanks for the tip about the starch, but you know how some collars just aren't made to pop? Plus, it would fight with my hair, which isn't quite short enough. And the weather cleared up and we ended up having a really nice day after all. ;)

Thanks, Beth Ann! You're a sweetie.

Ana, that striped top was SO asymetrical. I don't think I could stand on arm being tight and one being huge and loose. I did wear #8 out to dinner tonight, thanks!

Shannon, thank you for your detailed response! You're the bomb! I like how you really analyze your style and come up with concrete things to work towards. The thing I liked best about what you came up with was the "rugged" to juxtapose with the "sweet". I have been thinking a lot about what the opposite of sweet is and I will chew on that. Also what you said about structure was really good too. I often I think I know what a word like structure means, but your take on it makes me realize I have a lot to learn. It means what I thought, but perhaps so much more. Your style is fab and your advice is priceless; thank you!

Rae, I likey. I will think on this (maybe on my long plane ride home) and see if I can distill it further. And I think I *do* need to concentrate more on the legline, as it will automatically shorten the torso. Where are my heels?

Jilly and Jeanne, thank you and big hugs to you both!

Sarah A, were you the one who said you were a NTSB investigator? I am in awe of you! Being a former stew, I have watched all of the airplane accident tapes and that is a great reason to wear flats while travelling as well as natural fibers! I think I'll save the starch and crispness for my dress shirts I wear to volunteer in, but who knows? I think you hit the nail on the head with the low-waisted jeans issue. If I tuck in it looks like my legs are only two feet long. A lot of my skirts are low waisted too. So my only alternative is to untuck and maybe belt on top. I don't have any *real* belts, and was busted for using the fabric/ribbon sashes that came with one top and skirt. Thanks for your help and I can't wait to see your summer dresses!

DeniseP, here it is
http://www.insideoutstyleblog.com/
have fun!

Suz, I'm glad you understand what I'm talking about. The word *gawky* is perfect! It's like a combination of geeky and awkward and I love it, lol! I have not been this thin my whole life either, and I'm not sure when I got so boney! Oh--and I know I'm not a true IT either. I just have a strong shoulder and sometimes it doesn't do to decorate with a lot of epaulets and such. I just have to try things on and see what they do for me. A snug little schooner sounds perfect! As for wovens, as long as they are natural fiber, they are actually much cooler than knits. I'd love to find some gauzey loosely woven tops that still have some structure. Thanks for my assignment, and you're right I do need to just acquire enough of the right kinds of tops to wear in the first place. There is so little out there that works for me right now that it seems like I don't even have a style choice once I tick the boxes of lifestlye, bodytype, climate, etc. Ugh! Thanks for your great help. I'll have my eye on you, Missy!

Kyle, I'll go shopping with you any day and I consider it an honor to share some things in common with you. I love your style, and even though I think you are taller than I am I'll start paying more attention to the way you dress! How 'bout some casual WIW's ?

Diana, I'll have to revisit Imogen's site. I remember doing a lot of work on this stuff in January. I'm still not sure if I look best in a lower neckline even though by her charts I can bare a lot without getting to actual cleavage (if I had any). She has some good guidelines, but I got hung up on all the connect-the-dots, lol!

Shevia and anyone else I neglected to mention, thank you!

You are all so awesome, I wish I could hit more than one button for your help. Most of you have simultaneously boosted, solved, helped, given me wisdom and therapy all while making me laugh. As it ended up, I spent the day in a bikini on a paddle board and none of this body dismorphia spoiled the fun. Yay.

I need to shower and get ready for dinner, but I'll get back to reply to your individual, wonderful advice later. Thank you SO much.

You have received some wonderful advice here and I am afraid I have nothing to add. I am sort of with Jonesy - I don't see the problem in the first place. So I will just remark that you look gorgeous in white and blue, I love your wiw with the pink skirt too.

Claire, I have the exact opposite problem as you - short neck and short torso. I am forever looking at my photos and thinking I look like I have no neck and a giant head! I am quite jealous of your long neck actually...

Have you checked out Imogen's post on neckline balance points?
http://www.insideoutstyleblog......llery.html
I found this really enlightening... basically, you use the proportions of your face/neck to determine where your necklines (high and low) or necklaces should go for ultimate flattery. On me, the "high" neckline is like halfway down my upper chest and the "low" one is borderline indecent. It really helped explain to me why I can't wear things like boat necks and chokers. I bet on you they will be much higher!

PS: I really like #4 on you!

Seriously, you are model gorgeous. I have a hard time getting past that. Please, let's go shopping so you can model everything! I suspect you will find that structured pieces do look better on you...I don't do well with raglan or dolman sleeves, for example, and I think we have some things in common. And I believe that tall slender people with long necks are advised to stay away from things that exposé too much of the upper chest area, like V necks, drapey cowl necks, etc. I like you best in tailored pieces that are simple, but still modern. There is a wonderful elegance to your look. I do see that your torso looks longer in some of these shots, but if it bothers you there are lots of ways to trick the eye.

Claire, I'm loving this conversation! So much richness here; thank you for beginning with your own oh-so-careful analysis.

As someone who shares some similar body type issues with you, I understand what you are saying about wide expanses of visible chest and neck. Truth be told, I think you look terrific in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 8. But I know for myself that if a neckline is too wide or bare for my own taste I feel a certain...I don't know...gawkishness, maybe? This problem, if it is a problem, is new to me since my weight loss and I am still adjusting to it. Like you, I had fun this winter with scarves and turtlenecks. That was great! But summer is another matter and I'm not so happy with my options. I'm discovering that on the whole, wovens with collars, narrow Vs, crew necks, slash necks, or boat necks are my friend .

I know you worry that you are an IT. But honestly, my dear, you are NOT! We went over that, didn't we, and learned you are a slim hourglass! You DO have wide shoulders, but your hips more or less balance them. And in any case, your bone structure is delicate. So there isn't any worry about trying a modest boat neck; just make sure the top is fitted enough (a snug little schooner vs. an aircraft carrier!). I honestly think this could work on you.

Maybe I'm more willing to try this because in former days I used to be a pear, so I was all about balancing the hips. Now I'm no longer pearish (so much) but I still like a gentle boat neck for its balancing effects. I also think that one problem for you, in your hot climate, is that wovens will quickly feel sticky and hot and they might wilt (although in the dry air of Arizona perhaps not as much as they would in Hawaii). So while collared shirts look great on you (and you should definitely get some more of them) you may also want a breezier alternative.

Now that the neck issue is taken care of, let's move on to the rest. First, I do not think your torso is unnaturally long. LongISH is what I say to myself about myself, and it's what I'll say to you, too! I actually think this is another case where photo angle may be making you think your proportions are more peculiar than they are. Have you done Imogen's measurements test? I found it enlightening.

Anyway, long and slender actually reads "willowy." So this is a plus! The trick is playing it up in ways that highlight what's great. I agree with Rae's suggestions. Move the waist up where you can. Belt sometimes (if it's not too hot). All this will make a difference. But honestly, you look terrific already, and in my opinion, it's more a question of slowly building your wardrobe so it contains enough pieces for you to work with than it is of anything else!

Claire, this is a fabulous post and a fabulous analysis. From outfit posted I really like 3, 5 and 8. I think even tying higher above hip in 5 could help... Audry Hepburn photos do provide great inspiration for how to tie! I about despise low rise pants for the torso elongating effects among other issues so a mid to high rise with a tucked or partial tucked shirt works for me. I find woven shirts just work better for me most of the time in the winter and I do starch just the collars which is great because the rest of the shirt is still soft. Perhaps I am strange but I enjoy ironing so doing this isn't a big deal. Sta-flo is my favorite starch. I wore a uniform for years though so I don't associate wovens with being restrictive. If you do decide to wear more button ups, look for shirts with a decent amount of interfacing in the collar... That makes it easier. Or those that take or have built in collar tabs (I have seen exactly two ladies shirts that have ever had these features... But one was at goodwill!) Dresses have been my summer staple, will see how my collections hold up to my being refined by YLF eye! Okay, you are totally beautiful and have a great classic sense so relax, smile, and have a great afternoon!
