Aside from all the other reasons people mentioned, I have a general dislike of medications. I know there are some people who need medication to continue living or to have lives worth living. I'm talking more about medicating symptoms, not treating an illness. More and more OTC meds hit the market and more and more people take them without much thought or concern because they are OTC and "safe". I don't buy it. Anything we put in our bodies, especially in chemical form, is risky in the long term. Start mixing and matching different meds and who knows what will come of it.

Thanks Tam, that's interesting. I can’t imagine anyone trading off “physical-eye-aesthetic” for the true gift of sight. There is no substitute.

More importantly, Happy Anniversary.
Secondly, no way, no how. Not worth it. I'm all for natural beauty with a little help from mascara.
The universe knows better than my pea brain could ever imagine.

I vote no. I have green eyes, and nothing against brown eyes, but that's not me. I'd feel the same if I had brown eyes, I wouldn't want them to be any different. Like Laura's friend, it would be extremely difficult for me to deal with a change like that. Not something I could ever do in the name of beauty.

My friend has glaucoma and it was not funny when she had to take this medication with the side effect of changing her eye color - yes, she had long lashes but believe me, she would've given anything to have healthy eyes and short eyelashes. It's absolutely absurd that people would take this voluntarily. Absurd!!

Fascinating! Have never heard of this drug - as a treatment for glaucoma or for this new use either. Sometimes the evolution of drug indications is quite amazing; for example Viagra was first intended as an anti-hypertensive because it causes vasodilation, but when people started noticing an interesting side effect its use changed completely!!

I was curious to know why it causes the changed pigmentation, so I did some digging around. This is from MIMS (one of the main Australian drug guidebooks) in case anyone else is interested:

"During treatment with Lumigan, darkening of the eyelid skin and gradual increased eyelash growth (lengthening, darkening and thickening) with no consequent untoward ocular effects have been observed. Increased iris pigmentation has also been reported. The change in iris pigmentation occurs slowly and may not be noticeable for several months. The effect has been seen in up to 2% of patients treated with Lumigan for up to six months. Before treatment is initiated, patients should be informed of the possibility of eyelash growth, darkening of the eyelid skin and increased iris pigmentation. Some of these changes may be permanent and may lead to differences in appearance between the eyes when only one eye is treated.

Preclinical findings. Ocular administration of bimatoprost in monkeys at concentrations of 0.03 or 0.1% once or twice daily for one year caused an increase in iris pigmentation and reversible dose related periocular effects characterised by a prominent upper and/or lower sulcus and widening of the palpebral fissure. No associated increase in melanocyte number was observed with the pigmentation. It appears that the mechanism of increased iris pigmentation is due to increased stimulation of melanin production in melanocytes and not to an increase in melanocyte number.

Periocular effects were also observed in an intravenous toxicity study at systemic exposures at least 235-fold higher than that observed in humans after ocular administration. No functional or microscopic changes related to the periocular effects were observed. The mechanism of action for the observed periocular changes is unknown."

Regarding safety, since it was first used as a glaucoma drug, I imagine it has a proven track record of safety for use in and around the eyes. So assume safety isn't an issue - just a potential - and permanent - change of eye color!

DH said "why not use false lashes instead"? And my answer was "because my eyes are a weird shape and false lashes don't work on them." Mascara? You have to be good at applying it, and if your eyelashes are sparse and whimpy like mine, it can only give you so much extra definition - without that spidery clumpy look. So yeah, I can see the temptation for something like this. But no, I would not change my hazel eyes for longer, thicker lashes.

Although... as I pointed out to DH.... you could always wear colored contacts.... I have to wear contacts anyway. :-)

(No worries - I'm not about to sign up for this. Just playing devil's advocate!)

No way. I have blue-green eyes, which really do change color depending on what I wear. (Brown brings out the blue, purple makes them green, etc.) I would rather have NO lashes than give that up!

...can't they just be happy with mascara? Ridiculous. I love my brown eyes, but even if I didn't for whatever reason, I'd never use a drug that has such a scary consequence. I wonder what else might happen to your eyes.

Sounds pretty scary to me, I would never try it. I'll keep my blue eyes and my skimpy lashes - that's what mascara is for.

A lovely thing for your DH to say Shiny.

Well, I have brown eyes so it's not really fair for me to answer but if I *did* have green or blue eyes I would definitely NOT trade them for longer lashes. I'd also be a little nervous about using anything that discolors your eyes - even though the FDA approves it sounds a little iffy!

My DH saw this in the news today:

http://www.webmd.com/skin-beau.....ug-latisse

... apparently this new drug to grow longer, fuller eyelashes has a side effect: if you have green or blue eyes, it can *permanently* make them brown.

He told me that he loves my skimpy eyelashes and hopes I don't want to try this new drug... he prefers my hazel eyes. ... Very romantic, considering it's our anniversary! (Even if he is, once again, snoring away... )

So would you, or wouldn't you?
