Nothing like seeing what's what in reality when it comes down to it.

I went off to check out the Jennifer Love Hewitt maternity collection for Pea in the Pod that just came out. For inspiration. A little ordinary, IMO, but that's her style and she wears it pretty well. I did like her drapey, slanty sleeve tee thing tho. On trend and looks comfy.

I'm stunned you kept any of it. By the time I had my kiddo I was so sick of my maternity clothes I would have burned them if they hadn't all been ponte material (seriously, what is up with polyester maternity pants?)

I'd ditch the jeans for pregnancy TBH unless you stumble across perfect ones. If you didn't wear them last time I don't know why you'd wear them this time. (I didn't wear mine either and I am a total jeans girl as you know). And leggings and tunics are always super cute on pregnant ladies IMO.

I spent my entire pregnancy in Old Navy regular yoga pants because they looked like real pants under a maternity shirt and the fold over top slung under the bump. Just a thought!

You've done great! Taking action helps a lot. I find that sometimes I noodle over something in theory, but then if I just try stuff on, it becomes clear. Also just doing some shopping for maternity items can help clarify--see what's out there these days, and that may coincide with your list, or you might find some items that work better.

I say definitely yes! With my second pregnancy I actually went to a speciality maternity dress maker who made me a couple of items which I mixed and matched throughout my pregnancy with the items I already had and wore well into the first year. I felt good and looked good (IMO)

(ETA: there are some maternity wear items in Finds, including several pairs of jeans, perhaps have a look there too).

I'm glad you're going to go ahead and get a few refresher pieces. My "baby" is in his mid 20s, so I had several jumpers I wore (over and over). Since I was pregnant in the summer on the Gulf Coast, I had a pair of shorts but no long pants. I remember when the first cold front came through in the fall. I went outside without a jacket or shoes and the cold air felt wonderful!

Update: So, I tried on a bunch of the trousers from last go around, and I either tossed or donated half of them. Either the fit was off, or the fabric was terrible. I am just not dealing with lint catcher or pilled fabric :) Note to self, leggings don't store very well!

I also donated both pair of jeans I had. DH reminded me that they were so uncomfortable last pregnancy that I never wore them. At only 16 weeks, they weren't great (the stretch bit that goes over the belly is in an odd position compared to the rest of my trousers).

Oddly, I have not a single pair of shorts. Not one.

I also sorted through my tops, and while they all fit, I am surprised at how worn most of them look. I must've really worn the heck out of them last time around, or it could be that they were all cotton. Or a combination of the two!

So, on my short list:
1. One pair of full length jeans
2. One pair of boyfriend jeans
3. One pair of jean shorts
4. One pair of bermuda shorts
5. Leggings for under tunics
6. Potential top refresh in pretty summer colors

I vote yes. I remeber when I was pregnant, I felt big, chunky and not fab, so a wardrobe that doens't makes you happy will do nothing for you.
Maybe update only some pieces, a dress, the tops.

Absolutely. No need to buy quite the same quality your might under normal circumstances, but fresher items with your best colors, fit and silhouettes will help you feel and look your best. I think its important for career reasons, too. Looking polished and ready to go will signal that you are on the top of your game, even on days when your feet hurt and you're dying for a nap!

Even though your maternity wardrobe is "temporary," you still have to show up in it every day until baby pops out!

Ironically I spent the most money on maternity clothes for my third pregnancy. I did not regret it at all. That being said, I got the most satisfaction from the workhorse items (jeans, tees and dresses) that I used postpartum as well. My normal body shape is thin through the waist and bigger in the hips/thighs, so pregnancy weight is a totally different challenge for me and my regular wardrobe is just about useless for over a year. I agree with the accessories/shoes/bag ideas and just the right shape/length on your pants, skirts and dresses. I went up 1/2 shoe size after my first and again after my third pregnancy so I had to get rid of most shoes. I normally do not love wrap dresses, but I had a few of those that were great for breast feeding as well, if that is what you are planning to do. Also, I think a maternity capsule refresh is a great time to use trendy colors since you will only have the clothes for a limited time anyway. Best wishes with your growing family!

Thistle - I concur with everyone else. Go through what you have, select the best, and buy a few nice things to shake it up. Fortunately you have an awesome shoe collection so that should make many old things look fresh. I bought a lot of my maternity clothes from the gap. Cute and not pricey. But pregnancy is so hard on the body, you deserve to feel good in what you wear!!

I'm about a month ahead of you in pregnancy and I'll fully admit that I started out thinking that it was a waste of money to refresh. Well ... that line of thinking has fully gone out the window! My maternity wardrobe was 5 years old. I'm reusing most of it, but some pieces looked more tired and worn out than I'd remembered. Plus, my capsule was small, even by maternity standards, and my old maternity pants don't exactly fit anymore. But let's not go there. :)

Most of my refreshes have come from friends and consignment, but I've probably spent $100 on new stuff just for me and won't hesitate to buy more. I figure, we gotta do what we can to feel like "us" during this transition time!

Ok, I'm sure I'd save useful things from the old wardrobe. But I'm guessing, like Marin says, there were items that could have been more comfortable, better designed, and could stand replacing.

And also, it's kind of a treat that I think every woman deserves. And your friends will want to come shopping with you and you know, let's be honest, have a hen party...

Stick with most of it, it is time to be sensible with the budget, but buy a few new things to make dressing fun activity - after all, you will live in pregnancy clothes for quite a while. See if you can create some sort of capsule / base outfit from what you have, then consider what 2-3 purchases would jazz it up. Pretty cardigan in punchy colour maybe? Or a dress?

I think if you view it in terms of cost per wear, adding a few items makes sense. None of my clothes have ever worked as hard as my maternity clothes. I wore the same few pieces several times a week, especially towards the end of pregnancy. And by the third pregnancy everything was very tired looking. A few new tops, a topper, and a comfortable dress go a long way.

I'm going to be the naysayer. In my experience the clothes that I bought at 3 months were not the clothes that still worked at 8+ months or necessarily post partum. I'd largely be taking a break from fashion unless I had an event or job that I had (or wanted) to dress a certain way for. That's me though :)
OK having read the responses after I clicked and wrote the above, most people are advocating for just a few inexpensive purchases. That I can get behind! Tops are a good suggestion.

Congrats! My girls are 24 months and 3 days apart. My youngest's due date was on her sister's birthday, luckily she waited a couple of days.

I vote to buy a few workhorses that make you feel good. I purged the stuff I hated the second time around. I only purchased items that I knew would be workhorses and would last me into the 4th trimester. My total wardrobe was much small but better with my second. I also had a pregnant belly almost instantly with my second where I had been able to wear most of my normal clothes until 5-6 months with my first so I indeed up needing some summer stuff that I hadn't the first time. I was the queen of drapey cardigans during my pregnancies and after. They weren't maternity, just open drape or waterfall cardigans that could dress up the basic pants and t during pregnancy and worked fabulously has nursing covers after. I didn't view these purchases has short term clothes because I would use them much longer.

YES! Absolutely YES! First, there are lots of inexpensive options for fun, current maternity clothes that last about as long as your pregnancy and can then be passed along to others. I bought most of my maternity wear from Old Navy and a few heavy use items from the Gap. My maternity wardrobe was small, but well coordinated color and style wise and functioned as a compact capsule. A little went a long way. Second, you have probably gotten a lot wear out of your old maternity wear. Likely more than most of us ever get out of our regular wardrobe. Third, being pregnant is joyful, but hard. Your body changes. You often don't feel yourself. Your body isn't its normal self. It is nice to feel good about it. Having clothes that fit you well and make you feel good about your body is important. Fourth, you will wear your maternity wardrobe for a couple months after the baby is born, so really you are talking more like 9 more months of it.

I loved my maternity wardrobe with my first child. I was shocked when I pulled it out for my second that I didn't love it so much anymore. I picked out a few items that I still enjoyed, then picked up a few new ones to round out my wardrobe and went happily on my way. I even just kept my eyes peeled for anything that came my way that would work for maternity and post-partum and picked those things up if they were inexpensive. A wardrobe refresh doesn't have to be excessive. It will definitely be worthwhile, though.

Just a couple things right now - and add some accessories would be my advice. You may have a different perspective as the pregnancy progresses - plus it's always nice to get some NEW stuff after the babe - that's when I felt I needed the most pick me up!!

I would at least buy a few cheap and/or secondhand things to refresh the wardrobe. I think if you already have basics (like jeans, or plain skirts, or tees, or whatever) those can probably be made to look modern with the calculated addition of a few inexpensive, trendy items.

Or, you know, buy a really awesome handbag. It will still fit after the baby! And to the point of today's blog post, it's a super easy way to add drama to any outfit.
