You picked the perfect ones-they look great.

I wear glasses every day and I have finally realized that the "trendy" ones I love make me feel good and are worth the money. All the "practical" ones I have bought never make me happy and bring my energy level down.

So I would say go with the ones that make you happy and don't worry about several years from now. I don't think glasses styles are as changeable as clothes and you want to be happy today anyway, no?

I went through much the same decision-making process this spring. I can only budget for one pair of glasses, and I really fell for a smoky blue-grey pair of geek chic glasses. But the vibe was quite strong and I knew it just wouldn't go with half my clothes, so I reluctantly passed. If I had been buying two pairs, you BET I would have got them.

So I got something a little more classic and neutral. The previous pair were very discreet wire rims, so it took a little getting used to, even with the fairly safe glasses I bought. I keep dreaming about those super-nerd glasses though... LOL!

You did choose wisely though, as the ones you bought are very becoming.

Just so you can see my favorite pair (I have five frames, but these and my black ones get the most use), here's a (bad) pic. Purple and citron! They are 7 years old now...

Oh, I'm with alaskagirl--wear what pleases you right now.

Frames can be definitely part of your signature style, and, while most of us place a high priority on flattery in both our clothes and eye wear, sometimes it's fun to have something because it fits your current vibe.

That's why I got my current specs (just had them for a couple of days). They are made by a French company--Dilem--and feature swappable sidearms. Some of the designs are really wild while others are quite sedate. You can also mix and match colors. As soon as my eye doc showed them to me, I was smitten. They are also quite practical since they suit my prescription and are extremely light and durable. They aren't cheap, but, hey, I get a new pair of glasses every time I swap my side pieces. Since my prescription lenses are always the major cost, it seems like a win-win solution to me.

http://www.dilem.fr/en/ And, no, I don't own shares in the company (but maybe I ought to look into that!)

I don't think frames that suit you ever date... I only wear strong frames because I figure if I have to wear glasses every day, they might as well be part of my signature style. And they are, because people remember and compliment them.

So if a pair works for you, they are going to look great whether they are trendy or not, unless they are something so outrageous that only Gaga would sport them!

All that said, I don't think the trendy pair suits your face shape, so I think you made the right decision.

I am envious of your lovely eyebrows. Love the specs you chose, and also your old ones.

If you want to change things up every few months, why not buy the frames, have non-prescription lenses added, and wear them with your contacts?

My DH does this. He doesn't need a prescription as he has perfect eyesight. It's the one fashion vanity he has. He has a variety of specs (thrifted, vintage, found dumpster diving, and also purchased -- and he never purchases anything because he's too frugal). He loves to wear them when he wants to look professorial or lawyerly, or artistic/edgy.

YAY! I'm glad I chose wisely :)

Kari, I love those on you! It's beautiful how you get a sneak peek of your eyes from the sides through the horizontal gap, and they are a cheerful color, just like your style :)

Claire, don't worry I'm ok I just hit them with my hands while they were resting on the sink surface in my bathroom, and sice I can't see very well... I drop them pretty frequently but I'm lucky enough that I only get to break them every two or three years, they normally resist my clumsiness. As for the braces, they are 'invisible' or porcelain They felt terrible at first, but now that it's been a week I'm getting used to them and they are fine

Deb, that's a pretty good idea, but I don't care much about the expense of frames. Those were actually pretty cheap, around 100$, the problem is paying for the glass. I got a cheaper glass this time because it fit the frames better, it is actually organic type and more resistant (used normally for kids lol).

I actually like the pair you ordered best on you. #3 is cute, but seems much too wide - you have a gorgeous face and the frames dwarf it due to how far they stick out beyond your temples. The pair in #1-2 is narrower and more in proportion with your facial features. I'm also a sucker for contrasting colors inside the frames the way the pair you picked out features.

I wear glasses a lot of the time (less often this summer - I've been on a contacts kick - but usually I wear glasses 50% of the time or more.) When I shop for glasses, I do look for frames that feel somewhat fashion-forward but not so trendy that they'll look out of date the following year.

For example: the last time I bought specs, I got a pair of bronze titanium specs that had a light green inner color and racecar-inspired cutout sidearms (you can see them at the bottom of this page, or here on me.) The specs are unusual but flattering on my face (and they fit my very wide temples, yay!) but I can also see myself wearing them for years without feeling like they are too "faddish."

My sister, who has a much more artsy style than I did, got a pair of slightly sparkly, ombre blue "geek glasses" (similar to the shape of #3 in your post) that she uses for distance. They are a bit more trendy than what I picked out, but again, they fit her face and style very well.

First of all, about your accident, I hope you're okay! And I'm sorry your glasses got broken. I like the new ones you chose a lot. Nice to find out you're not limited to certain frames.

I guess I would do the same thing you did, pick a more classic frame that is unlikely to date quickly, since I wouldn't have the option of buying expensive frames every couple of years. And good job "knowing yourself" and that you like to change your clothing style frequently.

You look good in and out of specs! Are those invisible braces you're sporting? Looks like a retainer.

I wear eye glasses all of the time now that I cannot wear contacts. I also need expensive lens due to my correction requirements. Because they are on my face every minute I have several pairs that I switch with my wardrobe. I look and try on at various stores then go on line and look for the same frames, sometimes for a quarter of the price. I just ordered these ant they have other cute frames for a great price point.

Ah, I went to get new glasses and new glass frames today. After seven years of wearing the same frames, I was up for a change. I had a different plan which involved waiting for a month, then going to the store in September, when Spanish people actually work and the city functions completely so that you don't have to wait an entire week to get your new glasses. BUT, I had a domestic accident today and broke one of the glasses, so off to the store to fix it.

While I was at the shop, I was trying all sorts of frames -the assistant told me I could actually wear any frame, which I thought I couldn't because of the thickness of my glasses- and was about to buy a current, very fashionable purple frame with big squares and a bit of an eyecat at the sides. However, glasses are pretty expensive due to my sight necessities and go up to 350$ more or less (frame not included), so I cannot change my glasses every two or three years. I knew those beautiful frames would look dated and funny in three years or four years time, so I ended up picking more boring ones.

What would have you done? I already paid for them, so this is not an actual question as to what I should do but more like, what's your take on this?

Just for the sake of it (I can't look worse in the first two photos):

1 and 2: the ones I ordered. they are a really dark brown on the outside and pale pink on the inside

3 and 4: cool frames, which actually go with my current vibe. note the word 'current' here, I change vibes every six months

5: me with contacts!!! and new braces :P

6: old glasses
