rabbit - your wedding finery sounds very lovely.

amiable - all my time is being sucked into a black hole called "work". I'm bleary eyed, and can only hope it's not pity when people say I look nice. Lol. Pure grab n' go fashion. My hair looks better this week, tho. I got a blow-out, essentially, and am not touching it.

marin - the things one can do when they are 3! :)

y'all have made me realise, material probably matters a lot with this look.

I tried it once for a very early YLF challenge chain (maybe the very first one!) in which my challenge was something like dress for a trip with only the clothes you are wearing (so I layered as many as possible!)
I like it in theory too. In practice I tend not to buy dresses if they aren't long enough.

I actually don't really like the example. Something about the proportions seem off to me. And maybe too much contrast, color and texture. I think it is something that could look really cool but super tricky to get right. Much too advanced for me. Now my three year old does this almost daily.

I did it with my wedding dress, actually. :) I had a shorter light embroidered cotton Victorian style dress, that I put over an antique Victorian long petticoat that looked like it matched it. I think I've tried it once or twice since then when I had a dress that seemed too short, but haven't yet found a great match. Although I'm intrigued now to try it again...

I've done that! It's sometimes so hard to find dresses that are long enough, so I've worn a tube or pencil skirt with a short dress that works more like a tunic on me. It might be fun to try with a sheer underlayer, too!

I saw a YouTube video of Trinny (or Suzannah--can't keep 'em straight) explaining how she had a sheer underskirt specially made to make a favorite, above the knee dress have a bit more coverage. Of course the dress was designer, and the tulle skirt was custom made for it, so it looked great. When I try these clever ideas they usually look very beginner-level DIY, so no, I wouldn't do it without adult supervision, lol!

Been there done that... after I saw a suggestion online somewhere about doing it with a sweater dress. Since my sweater dresses are all above the knee which is too short for most occasions to wear, I sat up and paid attention. I wore my grey sweater dress to church recently, layered over a midi trumpet skirt in a tweedy bias plaid with taupe, black and silver tones. I didn't get any comments, but I didn't get any side-eye either. I layered a black shirt under because I need contrast with grey. Can't tell from the photo if I wore a belt; I think I decided it looked better without (the dress has a narrower knit band at the waist).

Sorry the pic is so dark.

Would love to make it work with my Joe Fresh Breton-stripe sweater dress, but it is a very IT shape narrower at the bottom, so any skirt full enough to add to the look would probably bunch too much.

I doubt it. 1) I struggle to wear the few dresses I own. 2) Unless you have exactly the right pieces, there is the strong possibility this will be fussy, bulky, or lumpy. 3) My lower half really doesn't need more volume.

I admit, it looks good here, and in theory, it would be an excellent way for someone like me who can rarely ever find dresses long enough to add some length to an existing dress. I just have a feeling that this is tougher to do in reality.
