Hmm, nice selection, but I'd find it hard to fit in a suitably-sized carry on. I also find some of the options a bit odd for "super hot" conditions -- far too many long sleeves, especially on the black dress! I'm imagining 3 weeks in Spain or Chicago in the summer, in which case I'd pack almost all sleeveless or short sleeved items and carry a scarf for potential air-conditioning chill.

I'm voting "no" to the "does this all fit in a carry-on" question. Also, I'd venture to say she's got too much stuff here. I'd lose one of the bottoms (either the white pants or the ivory cropped ones), and one of the heels (the wedges would yield the most space, but are likely more walkable than the nude ones). And half the jewelry (I don't need 8 different pairs of earrings for 3 weeks)

I actually think the cool weather one is a bit more realistic, as far as balance goes. Though I would add a heavier top (or make sure the long sleeve sweater was wool)...and I'd lose the long silver dress. If you really wanted something for evening, I'd probably put in an additional top with a bit of bling and a cute skirt.

I have travelled around the planet with only a carry on and I don't believe all of these items can fit. This capsule only included fashion items and none of the cosmetics and toiletries that we find essential. My formula changes with each destination but the basics stay the same. Oh and I use a roll aboard because as others have mentioned my shoulders don't do well with the weight of a bag. I am infatuated with the Zuca bag (http://www.zuca.com) but have yet to try it. I use packing cubes to stay organized and cut down on wrinkles so perhaps that is why it looks so appealing to me.

Wow! So much wisdom in this thread. I've spent a week+ in Europe with just a carryon, but I didn't bring this many changes - after all this is a three week capsule. Plus when I travel I often bring athletic shoes for exercising and I can't bring myself to wear them on the plane, especially if I'm on a business trip. My sneakers are huge, and even though they're crammed with socks they take up a lot of room.

Thank you all for weighing in. I'm definitely going to look at better packing methods and some of your previous packing threads to up my game. I know for my October trip to Martha's Vineyard I need to be prepared for all kinds of weather, and my small personal carryon will be my laptop bag.

High five, Bj and parsley! That's exactly what I travel with too. For shorter trips (like 2-4 days) I swap the roll aboard for a handheld overnight bag (just bought myself a new fuchsia one!).

bj1111, That's exactly what I take! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks it's possible and travels that way. We're going to be spending the month of September in France this year, with time in Paris and in the countryside, and I'm planning to just take a carry on.

It should be a challenge, with a range of weather from hot to cool fall days, and a variety of activities from city touring and nice restaurants to cycling, hiking, and swimming. I'll post a packing thread when the time comes to show what all will fit!

Easy peasy. I take a 22" roll aboard and a longchamp foldable large tote for my personal item. I've packed 8 pairs of shoes including three pairs of heels and one pr of heeled booties. Two wildly different weather conditions and a wide range of occasions...hiking to board meeting to formal black tie dinners.

This capsule is a piece of cake.

First off, I love capsules. My pinterest is full of them, vacation, work, etc. and I love this one, I would wear almost everything but it would never fit in a carry on. Where are your pjs, knickers, bras, toiletries, swimsuit and electronics? But I think it is a great example of how to pack for a trip and I have the colours so easy to adapt...now if only a trip planned

I am not sure about carry on but it would be worth a try. You could eliminate a couple of items and as suggested wear the bulky ones. And, would the trip be one where you might make additional purchases? That could be tricky if you were full to the brim

I think I could do that in my carryon bag, if I wore the jacket, hat, wedges (biggest shoes), and purse on the plane. Plus pants and a top of course. I don't usually bring so many shoes (I think I usually have max 4 pairs, often 3, including gear sneakers for working out/hiking/other such activities. but remember summer shoes are small! If we're talking boots five pairs is a problem.

For winter, yes the shoes are bigger but you also need to bring less clothes because they can be worn more times without washing....

To her credit, she calls it a "cool" weather capsule, not cold. It's funny, but I think packing light for cold weather is easiest of all. I usually opt for a second coat instead of a lot of clothes, since that's what shows, anyway. Then my clothes are a few black items and lots of scarves!

5 pairs of shoes in a carry on? No way. It doesn't fit. (Or so I thought until I read @Suz's post saying she managed to squeezed 5 pairs of shoes on her luggage... In btw: I now believe you have super powers, @Suz!)

Although I find the general guidelines and both travel capsules (winter and summer) beautiful, I can't imagine having all of it in a carry on that is still acceptable as a hand luggage 0n an airplane, for example. (Second @Astrid experience here for European Standards)

Ah, and the winter capsule also wouldn't be enough for deep Austrian winter...

For summer in a North American sized carry on, I think it would.

For my recent trip, I had five pairs of shoes in a carry on. (I didn't end up wearing one). I'll try to snap a photo of what was in there there week -- I had 3 dresses, a raincoat, 3 toppers, 2 skirts, 9 tops, 1 pants, 2 shorts, underwear, jewelry, 3 handbags, toiletries....

It's easy to pack a carry on in summer. It becomes difficult when temperatures are mixed and cold weather is factored in, and/ or where the activities are going to be extremely varied.

I think you'd have to wear the thickest sweater, jeans, trench, and hat on the plane. The rest depends on how thick the knits are. I had thin linen knits and very thin rayon and bemberg dresses.

ETA: I don't think the author's cold weather travel capsule would keep me warm at all!

I typically travel with carry on luggage only, even for multi-week trips, and it is amazing how much you can fit in! Whether all that she shows would fit I don't know, though. It might, in US allowed carry ons, but as Astrid points out, European airlines only allow a much smaller bag.

I do always wear my bulkiest items on the plane- any jacket, coat, hat, and my bulkiest shoes. I take very minimal toiletries and hair equipment. I take a 22 inch rolling bag and a large tote bag as my "personal item".

All bets are off on the return trip, though! I expand my bag to accommodate purchases and just check it.

Well, that would be one very full and heavy carry on! Great selection of clothes, but a tad ambitious, IMO. Also, I need a certain amount of room for my toiletry bag and hair equipment. Sometimes that takes up more room than you'd think!

No way. At least not in a carry on bag that meets European standards (which also would mean putting the handbag into the carry on bag for example). And IRL you would need some more things too - toiletries, pyjamas if you don't want to sleep naked, a towel (depending where you're going). It is a pretty capsule though.

I ran across this very pretty travel capsule on Pinterest, but then started wondering if it would really fit in a carry on bag. Five pairs of shoes? I'm assuming you wear the hat en route :-)
