OK, so this is a two-year-old thread that has got resurrected (has anyone noticed that this keeps happening lately?), but I'm going to chime in anyway!

Petites Anonymous, 'slouchy skinnies' and 'slim boyfriends' are the same thing, as I understand it. And if I were a taller woman, maybe I would wear my husband's jeans. (As it is, I'm almost the same size as you, so you're right, his jeans wouldn't come close to fitting). But that's the idea with 'boyfriend' jeans: they're supposed to look too big, like they could conceivably have been nicked from your boyfriend's closet. :-)

I like boyfriend jeans. I like baggy butt pants. It's just another silhouette option for jeans. I like tighter-fitting jeans too. It's all good.

Wow. Have BFs been the thing for two years now? I never got on board. I don't mind baggy and the absence of flattery (like I love harem pants)... I think it's the rolled cuffs (besides the fact that I barely do denim - real denim, that is). I don't suppose I feel that's important for the look, but there's only one day a week where I could do rolled cuffs. If saw some with plaid patches, maybe I'd fall for it...

After wearing them at home for 2 hrs and having them stretch to the point of falling off, i decided to send them back. Plus i began to picture myself explaining to the other ladies " they're boyfriend jeans" . Honestly, they just look like mom jeans that everyone wore 25 years ago. If you are young and slim and can look good in your actual boyfrien's pants ( meaning anything) go for it.

Julie I partially agree with you, but Angie makes a good point too: BF jeans don't * have* to have a dropped crotch or be super slouchy. I don't mind the ones that are a bit slimmer but obviously loose, yet not completely baggy-butt. To me that just looks sloppy. But that's just my opinion! I have yet to try any incarnation of this look, no clue if I ever will. Since I have a fairly limited budget it's doubtful I'd spend money on something I'm so unsure of leaning towards distasteful of.

I am small and thin (5', about 100 lbs). If I wear slouchy clothes I tend to just look like I just bought the smallest size and it wasn't small enough! I feel like a kid who hadn't grown into my clothes. Also, I still do t understand the difference between "boyfriends" and "slouchy skinnies." Also, I don't like the term "boyfriend jeans," because who would ever wear their BF's actual jeans?! Even a very tiny guy would be 6 inches taller than me and 40 pounds heavier. Ha!

I just got a pair, so guess i'm a little late to be trendy. I kept them because they were gap sexy boyfriend for 22.00. At that price i will wear them at home for comfort. I have been looking for a pajama/ loungewear substitute to wear around the house. They really are that comfortable. I might wear them to the grocery store if i thought i wouldn't see anyone i knew.

Oh this has been a fun thread to read! Julie - I got to say, just stick to your fashion guns. You know what you like and what is flattering on you and what you feel good in - so wear your dresses and skirts and skip the BFs (you always look great in your WIW's!)
Now, for me - I love the BF look - probably because it is something different - and I think a certain type of person/style can really pull it off - just look at Una's BF WIW's - they are IMO spectacular! And I am waiting patiently for Angie (come on Angie, we want to see how its done!) to post her BF jeans outfits because she has a completely different style and body type than Una, and yet I'm sure they look fantastic on her too!

I think that sometimes it is just fun to wear something that might not be all that flattering on your body - as long as it is INTENTIONAL, rather than done out of a lack of knowledge or awareness of what works for your body type - and also, as long as you have the CONFIDENCE to pull it off! Its like you're saying "I know this doesn't do my body justice, but I have other priorities with this outfit - like, freedom, movement and "coolness!"

'Look who got dressed in the dark after the orgy', now that sounds like one heck of a party. Although not flattering per se I don't find the unflattering, a pegged cuff can highlight a dainty ankle or the dropped crotch emphasises the (by contrast) small waist.

I usually have this type of reaction to a trend, it is either love or hate at first sight.

Oh, dear! My legs are so short and my trunk is so long that with looser jeans I already look like I am wearing a dropped crotch! I just thrifted a pair of loose jeans that I plan to wear scrunched over my shoes -- my version of BFs. That's how I would wear borrowed jeans anyway.

Julie, just wanted to chime in and say I don't get it either. I was a big fan in the 80's, I would never go back to the look.

Even if some of them look rock chic and cool, I maintain the model would look 100% better with better fitting jeans.

Now something truly horrifying: skinny dropped crotch. I don't get it. At all.

I hope there is an alternative this Fall or I will stick to dresses and skirts !

Julie, if a trend or style is not for you, it's not for you, no problem! For example, I don't like pencil skirts or ballet flats so I don't wear them.

But I am really loving the BF trend/look. I'm short, in my 40s, not skinny, have a butt and no waist. Common sense says this is not a look that would be traditionally flattering on my body type. But you know what -- for me it's not about looking pretty, or flattering my shape, or looking attractive. It's having fun with a look and seeing how I can play with it. It's playing with contrasts and shapes. I haven't worn my skinny jeans or bootcuts in ages -- into the BF and flares at the moment, until it's time to move on

Oooh, I like the idea of "girlfriend jeans." A straight leg jean in two sizes up sounds intriguing. I've been wanting BF jeans but the Gap style, which is the only lower-priced option I've seen, is still pricey when it's always excluded from promotions.

Interesting thread Julie:) I quite like the look on others but I must confess that going to slouchy and loose around my mid section is only going to make me look 'big" and I am not comfortable with that, so unless I can find a more fitted, slim pair I may be excusing myself from the BF jeans party:(

I have to admit that I'm not a fan of the dropped crotch + denim look. I can enjoy the look in soft fabrics on other people (like Angie's amazing harem trousers) and I like the look of the fitted boyfriend jeans, but to me the oversized, drop-crotch boyfriends just look... well, sloppy. It's just not a look that I prefer. Someone who is wearing drop-crotch jeans doesn't automatically look frumpy to my eye; it's just that I would like the overall look better if they were wearing jeans that were a bit more fitted.
A's variation of wearing her girlfriend's jeans on Academichic is still my favorite version of the boyfriend jeans trend that I've seen so far. If I could find a pair of boyfriend jeans that looked that stellar on my frame, I'd be thrilled.

I don't get them either- yet - but I have learned to never say never. I'm too curvy for the style to be flattering on me anyway. I also prefer form fitting and figure flattering looks over slouchy and oversized styles. I think they suit my body type best.

The interesting thing about this new "trend" to me is that I never really knew baggy jeans ever went away. I've been buying this cut of jeans consistently for 20 years. In the last couple of years they've become "boyfriend" but before that I think gap and jcrew were calling them weekend jeans. The cuts have shifted slightly over the years and I'm liking the slimmer leg on the current flock.

I think the only new part is dressing them up with heels and blouses, but they've always been around as a casual wardrobe staple. I can find pictures of women in this cut of jeans during every decade from the 50's on.

Julie, I had to laugh at your comment about the fire--that made me remember a similar incident that I was responsible for in a university chem lab years ago. But I also had to smile at your "old lady" remark.

I think it's true that some shapes have a harder time getting through our style filters when we get older. Age gives us enough to work with without trying to deliberately wear unflattering looks. So, if you'll move over, I'll join you on the bench and we can sit out the BF jean craze in our well-fitting jeans.

Sylvie, great point - I think BF jeans are one of those trends that more easily look intentional on skinnier folks, and on those of us who are heavier it can look like we're wearing our husband's jeans because ours don't fit anymore. Mainly because the contrasting fitted top half can't be done in exactly the same way.

I felt "no way Jose" about skinny jeans for a long time and finally I got some because I was tired of looking like I hadn't bought jeans in five or ten years. I still don't think it's the most flattering look for me, honestly, but I wear it sometimes just so I can look like I'm participating in current fashion culture. Only time will tell if BF jeans will be a trend-turning-to-modern-classic like that.

I will say what I think works for larger women who are interested in this general idea - a pair of tailored full trousers, ala Marlene Dietrich, with a fitted blouse or top. Buy them a little looser around the waist than you would jeans, tuck in your top and wear heels and it's a flattering and different silhouette.

I like how my BF jeans look when I wear them, baggy saggy seat, dropped crotch and all. I think it is of primary importance to dress for yourself and your aesthetic, and while one here invites comments and input from others, remember you are the ones wearing the clothes and if they make you happy that is all that matters.

My gut reaction to the BF jeans look today is 'no.' But I liked the look in the '80s.

When it comes to fashion, I'm not interested in seeing people's bodies, their body shape. Honestly, there are many times when I'd like to see a whole lot less, but I digress.

This is one trend that looks bad on almost everyone. I liked several WIW that YLF members posted with fitted version of bf jeans which are slightly loose but stil fairly formfitting. Loose, baggy with dropped crotch look-not attractive on anyone, even tall thin models.

In my opinion, BF jeans are a trend, and, like all trends, some people look like they were born to wear it, other people can figure out how to make it work for them, and some people should just stay away from it.

The bandwagon approach that accompanies most trends really turns me off. How can something be new and fresh when everybody is doing it? That said, I'm all for experimenting in the privacy of the dressing room or at home, but, ultimately, if it doesn't work for my body or lifestyle, it won't make it into my wardrobe.

Sveta, I am with you on this. I'd like to see more pics of different body types wearing them. I tried the KUT ones but I'm just not sure. I tried my size and a size up for bagginess but I don't think the baggier ones worked. I think I'm keeping the smaller pair but I've had a hard time finding pics/examples of this style on curvier folks. I know people are wearing them as they are selling them, but I haven't seen them for reference.

Just to clarify, I wasn't saying that we all should wear the strangled sausage look when it come to jeans. Far from it. Mine are not screaming tight, but they are fitted to within an inch of their seams. And that's what I mean. Well fitting doesn't mean obscenely tight.

I think well fitting clothes project a much better image than ill fitting ones.

I've altered just about every pair of jeans I own, and trust me, they fit. They are form fitting, but I can run and do many of the gymnastics moves I used to train so hard to do. Dancing is a joy, and no cutting or pinching when sitting.

So, no disrespect intended when I see boyfriend jeans and think, " Look who got dressed in the dark after the orgy."

I just don't get it, and probably never will. And, I'm prepared to live with that.

Cheers everyone

The baggy jeans thing just doesn't work on me either. While obviously there's a version that works for everyone, it's a look that's easier to pull off for the slender - as Laura said, it's about the contrast - you *know* their body is in great shape even if you can't see the contours.

I recently purchased a pair of skinny bf jeans. On me, they are form fitting cropped jeans.

Style and fashion are something that is ever changing. The more fashion forward looks worn today will look dated in a decade. But if we wore the same styles our whole lives, we'd get bored. BF jeans are just another passing style.
