What Stella and Lisa said. You buy the size that fits the way you want it to fit NOW. Yourself, today. Not a future you.

Also, what Irina said because she is simply manipulating the fit of an item for the same body size.

I have in the past thrifted smaller items with a view to fitting into them in the near future. I would not buy brand new in sizes that are too small. That said the idea of different drapes via sizing in the same tee shirt is an interesting one and I can see that it could be valuable.

I prefer to buy for the size I am at now, not a future size. I've been burned in the past buying back up clothes that I either never get to wear because my size changed again or my style preferences changed by the time I got to a size to wear the item.

The weight issue is a difficult one to know about buying different sizes, Ket and Goldenpig. It sounds really useful advice to have two sizes for different fits/drape. My own change in weight was gain in mid-40s when perimenopausal (actual menopause age 46, younger than expected as Mum was 50 and you often follow your mother) and then loss from age 58. This was due to trying hard especially reducing portions but I also wonder if some of it was because my metabolism had really settled into its post menopausal state by then, whether that contributed. It fluctuates a little still but not usually enough to change size.
There was a really good post 8 years ago by a Fabber called Toban about how to buy the right amount to get you through gradual loss and not waste money. https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....obe-review

With t-shirts, I would. Esp if I like the fit, the necklines, colors (and if they don't keep that color for long).

Enabling :)) (but I like t-shirts).

I also am wondering this because I am working on my weight. It went up over the past 10 years, had to purge a lot of the stuff that didn't fit anymore, bought new clothes for the current me and now I am worried if I lose weight that the new wardrobe I bought won't fit anymore!

I am saving the best stuff from my prior wardrobe in case they start to fit in the future, although they may not ever fit again, it's stuff I can't really replace so I'm ok having a few storage bags of items. I did offer them to DD to have or borrow, but she was too busy the last time she came to visit (she was only here for one night).

I did buy a couple of items in a smaller size than I'm wearing right now. One is a Gap barrel jean with a floral print that also had a matching denim jacket, they are already roomy for the size listed. I bought the M but I kept the S in case I lose weight. It was on sale and not that expensive so NBD if I don't use the small. Another was a pair of plain barrel jeans, I bought one size down in case the one I'm wearing becomes too baggy. It was already on sale and bought it from Nordstrom, so I could potentially return if I don't end up using it. It was also not that expensive ($65) so not a big deal if I don't use it. I have the feeling that my overall torso/hip size is not going to shrink even if I lose 10 lb, hopefully it'll just mean my apple/food baby gets less protuberant. The overall style seems to be looser nowadays so I tend to upsize from M to L, hopefully it'll still look OK even if I lose more weight.

I would say if you really love the item and it's unique and you have the space and money, then buy and keep two sizes of your favorites. If you can always get something similar later, then don't worry about buying multiple sizes.

I agree with Irina. I buy 2 sizes always, for more flexibility in fit and drape, depending on the outfit. And I always end up enjoying both!

kkards, That is excellent advice!! I feel like v-necks are harder to find tbh. Everything is crew and crew is especially in the limelight now with current trends. Sooooo… probably going to stock a few colors and sizes. (Just not as heavily as I first intended.)

Like Irina I own my basic white tee in 2 sizes, because sometimes you want a closer fit and sometimes a more fluid fit is what I want. I think with vnecks in particular multiple sizes can be tricky so if you really like this color and the price is really good, so for it, but if your so so on the color, I’d recommend only getting the size that works the best now.

Unfrumped, that is some smart advice! I went head and ordered a couple of colors a size down to see how they fit and what I htink of them. Will share more in a future post I hope-- if everything fits well.

What Irina said. I normally like to wear my tees, or T-style knit tops, pretty fluid fit but then will find they don’t work well under some blazers or jackets. The neckline will sag or top bunches. For some tops the same style works in 2 sizes , or I might just have 2 different navy or gray tees.

If it’s a top I’ve never tried I sometimes have to re- buy up or down size if it shrinks, or doesn’t. I hate that and try to avoid unless HEWI color or fabric or tgd perfect neckline, sleeve fit.

I would normally wait but Torrid doesn’t keep thr same colors in production. It’s a crap shoot each season when they roll out new colors. Sometimes the gamble is fun, sometimes it’s disappointing.

Some of my waffling is more of a budget issue in the end. I have some extra but do I need or want to spend it on extra tees for down the road? Or is it more fulfilling to buy clothes for NOW that I love? If I’m very honest, the latter makes more sense. I have always tended to build a long term wardrobe. Maybe this is a season to work with a smaller wardrobe that can pivot more easily—as I gently tiptoe in new style directions, and feel out the weight shifts.

And then, what if this new direction in my style stops and I’m suddenly sitting there with 6 tees, wishing they were boho blouses? :P

And maybe I’m just overthinking this all ha!!

I love all your thoughts!!

Stella, I tend to lose weight very evenly. Not sure why. And that could always change of course, but so far, it’s holding true. I’m coming out of a very hard 10-yr health season. So still re-learning some trust even with clothes.

Jaime, touché! I tend to have a hard time finding tees I even like despite them being a basic. But I do hear your wise thrifting wisdom!

Carol, so… surprisingly, I don’t use tees that much-even the ones I own. Haha! This is more due to neckline shape than anything. Not a crewneck lover. That said, my rocker sweatshirts are crewneck, and I love them. For me, if an item resonates, I will overcome and wear it. I also think my 15 year period wearing dressier styles trained me out of tees, to some degree. I actually don’t even own a tee to wear to bed or muck out the hen house. :}

Irina, I love that you wear them two ways! This gives me a new perspective on tees.

I bought Uniqlo U white t-shirts in two sizes, not for the reason of weight fluctuations but because I like more fitted t-shirts under cardigans and looser fit to wear on its own. Worked for me, they are not expensive. I don’t know if it possible to predict how it would fit once your weight shifts. Worth trying if it’s not a budget issue.

Here's my thought--if it is a tee, you will use it. If there are two of them, you will use both. If you can afford two sizes, get them. How I am, I would wear the better fitting one, and then three days later realize I need the other one to throw on for the post office. I bet you would use them all!

I do not think it’s worth it, simply because weight loss or gain is not alway proportional. You may find at the next size down that the top doesn’t drape or lay the way it does in its current version. Trust that you’ll find something else you really like.

I am looking to buy some knit tees I absolutely love the fit and color of from Torrid. And... they're all on clearance to boot. As my weight continues to shift, I am wondering if it's worth purchasing more than my current size. I mean, I really love the fit of these tees more than anything else I've tried-on in some time.

Sadly, these tees aren't worth thrifting off Poshmark, etc. due to the mark-up most sellers do.

I'm purchasing the Girlfriend Tee, photo 1. And also their elbow sleeve tee (photo 2) -- in a luscious drapey rayon blend that is surprisingly not clingy.

I'm making a style shift and that has surprisingly made me lean toward wearing tees for the first time in maybe 20 years?? FWIW, I do think the elbow version is more "me" but I like the Girlfriend Tee too. I am planning to layer them with a belted cardigans, biker jacket, blazer, etc.

How do you all shop with weight shifts and buying (or not) multiple sizes?
