smittie: Yes, I mean uniform in the most literally way. But the nylon ruched capris and track pants were both under $17.00 -- I was very excited about both of them as bottoms but it was an experiment with not much investment. I actually took the time to be thoughtful about this most worn capsule (research, thinking, planning, etc.).

Thanks for the list of shoes. I can see how those would work well and I actually really like the EF sandals. I'll look into the other brands.

I haven't fully embraced sporty luxe, I'm sorry I gave that impression, but I do like my sneakers, and want to add some of those old school brooks ones or maybe some more white canvas ones ((Supergas or tretorn?). I also like that nylon material and have some track pants that I wear all the time.

When you say you are into uniforms, you REALLY mean it in a literal way! :-)
I love the concept of wearing the same thing every day, but that puts a lot of pressure on you to find *just the right thing*. I'm not sure I'm good enough at picking out clothes.

smittie: Glad to meed an Urban Sporty Luxe aficionado. Will be very interesting to see how you execute this. And yes, 5 pair of the exact same item. Windbreaker capri and track pants in the spring/summer I wear with black modern minimal sandals. Think L.A.M.B., Robert Clergerie, EF in styling. I also do perforated black vans. I'm search of a mod sneaker, probably platform -- I don't want it to be ultra street but definitely urban. Haven't started an all out search yet. I don't look to dress these up. I want to stretch modern and inch towards avant garde. My minimal preference mean every piece has to work very hard. This is a work in progress. Tell me more about what you wear for your Urban Sporty Luxe...

Am- I am an Urban Sporty Luxe aficionado.
I'm curious what your capris with ruching look like.
Also, are you saying you buy 5 of the exact same item?
I have a pair of track pants in that windbreaker material and really like them. My main issue is that they are so very gear-like that I don't fee totally comfortable wearing them out. But, now that I think about it, those particular pants also had an elasticize bottom which really makes them look like mega-gear.

What type of footwear do you wear with your windbreaker material bottoms? I wonder if the footwear might dress them up a bit.

Ipr200 - Lady Danger is so cool. First you should know that this was a year of experimentation. Second, I work all week from home. The goal was to define a uniform that I would wear daily/5 days a week. I landed on Urban Sporty Luxe. For each season I found 1 bottom that worked and purchased 5-6 of each. Same for tops (almost). All black. In spring, track pant. Summer, capris with ruching. Both of these were made of light weight wind-breaker material (I don't know what to call this?) Winter, it has been leggings/skinny jeans. I didn't buy for "quality." The capris with ruching (calvin klein) and track pants were made by Kyodan and purchased at Marshalls (again 5 of each at the same time). Everything has held up. I entirely enjoyed weekly uniform of Urban Sporty Luxe. Tight control = easy and cohesive.

approprio - I'm not sure I can get to the point of wearing high end quality pieces around the house.

Interesting that you say this is a "It's a subset of my regular clothes..some of my favorite garments...I know I'd begin to feel sloppy if this was all I ever wore." This might sum it up for me but need to marinade on this.

Ditto Slouchy bottoms - I'm definitely going to investigate your selections and see how I react to these.

And ditto on fluid fit or oversized sweaters - merino, cashmere, artisanal woolens -- I've had to make this more "polished" thin cashmere with wraps, long cardigans, big scarves that feel more chic.

I seem to have developed a capsule which covers this, comprising a selection of high end quality pieces which I wear around the house and can easily pop out to run errands or meet informally without feeling underdressed. It's a subset of my regular clothes, some of my favourite garments in fact, but I know I'd begin to feel sloppy if this was all I ever wore.

Slouchy bottoms - premium men's Levis, Christophe Lemaire denim chinos, Studio Nicholson drop-crotch pants, Comme des Garçons culottes etc
Fluid fit or oversized sweaters - merino, cashmere, artisanal woollens
Cotton tees: long sleeved turtle necks, Breton stripe, concert shirts.

This is not always the most flattering look, but it fits with my current direction and lifestyle with all the pleasure of good design and glorious fabrics. I find that if I love something enough, boredom is not a problem.

Jenn has a black tunic/ smock and I think she wears black bottoms also. I'd probably go for ink blue. I could do it winter and summer. But then again, if I'm bored with the current version this might be even more boring!

Another option would be refining in a different way. This is why your naming idea appeals to me. I think the name would focus the purchasing in a positive way. So I might say my at home capsule could be: Bright and Bold (for example) and even if it was just jeans and a merino tee, it would be bright! :)

The advantage of this uniform is that it is easy for me to go out -- I add a third piece (be it scarf, jewellery, jacket or something else); add interesting footwear (in the months when I can; otherwise, snow boots, sigh..) and my coat/ hat/ gloves. So the core stays the same.

It's also a disadvantage. One thing I love about summer dressing is that I can easily switch up the silhouettes. That's possible because I'm not dealing with footwear problems, I can wear bare legs (ah bliss!), and light layers will work except in extreme weather.

AM, I've been mostly working from home for quite a few years now, yes, although I also work outside the home at various times. But I hardly feel advanced at this. Instead, I feel a bit bored with my same old same old! But I have to admit that it works for me, so this is why I think perhaps refining a bit might be key -- making it one colour or something. This is what Jenn has done, I believe.

rachylou: Too funny - "Sleazy But Not Cheap." And will there be any cross-over to the bakery capsule? I loved reading all your capsules and am looking forward to see how the writer in you names your other capsules. Sill laughing about your post!

Sterling: I too struggled when I went from creative boutique work environment to working from home. Similar situation because I still go to meetings. I feel like I have finally got a grip on this by developing capsule concepts -- and then names. Ponte pants might be a consideration for bottoms that could span home to work? Don't know if you wear these. I'm ridiculous about uniform dressing (control, cohesion, signature look, ease). I identified the three black bottoms that I work for each season -- and bought five of each. And similar for the tops -- except winter (black and gray knits). Can't wait to see your further discussion on this.

My dissatisfaction is with all my black leggings. They fit me so well but I feel they need to have an absolute killer boot in winter or a killer sandal in summer. They have to be part of an outfit that is really pulled together. As part of a uniform -- they aren't as exciting as my track and cropped black pants with rouging made out windbreaker material (but less noisy -- I'm not good with fabrics). These bottoms just feel more hip.

Suz: Your comments about leggings and instead opting for athletic pants is making me think I should explore this option. The boot cut of a yoga pant or a straight leg might work for me to up the style factor.

Your winter uniform sounds well defined -- and I like how you liken it to jeans and t-shirt for summer. It sounds like you are more fully evolved on this front. You might be able to define a 2nd uniform to shake it up. Or begin advancements on your original uniform. But it sounds like you have a baseline that is really working -- and you've identified areas for improvement. Again, I'm thinking your advanced in this area...maybe more experienced in working from home?

Lisa: Small, cohesive and black capsules -- your speaking my language lady. I've done a massive purge and am in an assessment period -- I felt everything regarding my wardrobe, clothes storage, shopping was inefficient (and hard). Getting to "small" was an essential fist step.

I don't work from home, but I do understand the need for a small, cohesive capsule. My business capsule is very small and built around a core of black. This way when I go on a business trip I can pack it all and everything matches with the same shoes.

I can't speak for AM of course but the reason I don't wear leggings at home is because I never feel good in leggings. . For about a million reasons. I wish I did, because they are ideal in theory. For me it is a body type thing. They do not flatter me and they are not fuss free because they constantly crawl down. I have more luck wearing my thermal underwear as "pants" when I'm at home!! (Thermal underwear also keeps me cozier, though I suppose a fleece lined legging would have that benefit as well). My athletic leggings are much better than regular leggings on this score, and sometimes I will wear those under a long sweater, but tunics really don't flatter me, I don't like the idea of leggings showing the lady parts, and I don't like to be wearing gear all day at home either. It's a conundrum.

My at home winter uniform, if such it is, has (as yet) no name but it consists of a cashmere or merino tee worn over a tank or cami, a pair of slim straight jeans or sometimes slim BF jeans, wool socks, a belt, and sometimes a wrap or cardigan. I will semi-tuck the pullover and wear a belt. I wear a watch and slippers.

The silhouette is uniform (for the most part) but I do vary the colours. It is practical and comfortable for me, and can easily be transitioned to outdoor wear by a change of footwear and addition of coat and possibly a scarf or more jewellery. But -- and here is the trouble with a uniform -- it begins to feel distinctly unfashionable after a while. After all, this is essentially a winter version of "jeans and a tee." And I would like to be a step above that, somehow, after all these years.

Perhaps there is no step above it, though. Perhaps the key is further refinement. As in -- always wear all ink. Make the uniform a signature vs. a fallback.

Brilliant.

For years, I worked in an office five days a week. In the past year, I have started to a schedule in which I work in the office three days a week and at home two days a week. This change has completely perplexed me. I have not found my footing AT ALL.

Uniform dressing may be the solution for my two days at home. It would be nice if that uniform could also carry me to work too. I doubt that is possible though. So I need a work capsule; a work-at-home capsule, a casual capsule, an athletic capsule, lounging capsule, and finally, sleep capsule.

May I ask why you are dissatisfied with the fleece lined leggings? They would seem ideal to me.

I love the idea of naming capsules. The writer in me? I have to get to work on this (!) I have one: Sleazy But Not Cheap. Lol. Ok, well, Sleazy isn't exactly right, but this capsule is for evenings out but not to the opera or ballet. Dressy yet not formal. Going to a trendy lounge, art shows, music shows, parties where dancing occurs... Oh, I do have my Native Wear (Native SF Bay Area that is) / At Home clothes, but there's a subcapsule there for heavy chores that could probably just be called 'Cara' ... as in Cara Delvigne, lol.

My bakery capsule needs a good name now...

Suz: Naming capsules definitely helped with stye definition but I didn't realize other people weren't doing this too. I'm sure it is also a reflection of what my mother used to say about me (kindly), "You are so particular." I forgot to add the other name of my winter work from home capsule is "Apres Ski" -- I purchased wonderful furry black boots that I wear with my black parka. It's as if I just came off the slopes. Reality: I live in the DC suburbs but it's just so fun. I've received loads of compliments. And as you've said it really has made me feel more fashionable.

Ipr200: Ditto on motivation dropping. Getting real about lack of motivation was liberating. My capsules had to be ultra easy and comfortable for that very reason. Comfort factor has really brought me further into reality and you can really style up Sporty Luxe or get lazy about it. Either way it works for me. I'm totally on your wave length.

I really like how tight your capsules are. I was thinking about Suz's post myself because there are days I work at home or run some errands so my motivation to dress up is low. I'm caught between "get dressed up anyway" to defining a winter sporty luxe capsule. What's interesting and what I really haven't considered is the whole comfort factor, which I'll reconsider with my clothes. And the show factor, as I wear Ugg slippers only at home!

Thank you for raising this! There are a lot of us work from home types here (which makes a lot of sense, when you think of it...)

The first thing I thought when I read your post was how clever it was for you to give your capsules a name. I hadn't thought of that but doing so might make it easier to create a more defined look that would automatically feel more considered and thus more fashionable. Interesting.
