I too am having a hard time telling much about the Loft, because the photo is dark. As for the J. Crew, it doesn't seem to have the same silhouette as it did on the mannequin--maybe it is not the best for your body type, as you mentioned. But I think the size may be OK--it looks like it fits your shoulders all right. I'm terrible when it comes to questions about how clothes fit, so I'll sign off and see what other people have to say.

It's kind of hard to tell from your pictures.
The J Crew one looks good- it's a pretty color and I like the neckline.
The size looks good from what I can see, but you can tell better, I'm sure.

I'm afraid I just can't tell much of anything about the Loft one. I know how hard it is to get decent pictures of dark colors.

Having tried on more peacoats than I can count, I have to agree with Suz - you'll have to try them on and determine which fits you best.

I have a J.Crew peacoat that I am really happy with. I usually wear a 4 at J.Crew but had to size up to a 6 to fit my relatively broad shoulders. The wool is soft on the outside but the real difference I notice vs my other wool coat (from Jacob) is the silky soft, substantial feeling lining. $225 is not insignificant money, but it seems reasonable for a winter coat if it fits beautifully and will get a lot of wear.

I just bought the Lands End peacoat. Unfortunately I have to return it because it doesn't fit. I must say, however, that I was quite impressed with both the fabric and the quality of the construction. Before this purchase, I tried on several very expensive coats at Saks Fifth Avenue. The Lands End peacoat fabric is every bit as luxurious as that in the much more expensive coats. I may order another Lands End coat if I can figure out what size to try.

That's so odd, Gail. I purchased a 6 in that coat and I'm typically a 6-8.

I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of my JCrew coat (purchased in CA but had it shipped to me so I wouldn't have to lug it home). It should have made it here by now. I think I'd better call today. It is not what I'd call a heavy coat, which is perfect for me. I've never tried the others, so I can't speak to their quality, although I do hear good things about that Lands End one. I've had good luck with the fit of JCrew items on my top half -- but I think they do cut for a moderate-to-slight frame (I'm quite narrow across the back but have a fairly big bust) so I can see how some people might need to size up. Many coats are just too broad on my back and end up being too small in the hip, length, and sleeve when I size down.

I can see how it might take trying on a few pea coats to find the right one!

I love the J Crew coat .
I tried one on last week, I thought it ran very small. I would have had to purchase a size 6 to be able to wear comfortably over even a thin sweater. I have a small frame, 5'5" and weigh 120lbs and wear a size 2 or a 4 in pants and a size small top.

Love the J. Crew! What a gorgeous color and cut! The Land's End would be nice quality for the price, however, and it's cut would cover a blazer or bulky sweater a little easier.

Personally, the cut alone on a J.Crew coat was worth it for me. Landsend garments do not fit my body type. But I have clients who love their Landsend coats, and they do make a good quality piece.

I am blown away by J.Crew's coat quality. It's better than most designer stuff.

I have found j crew fabric too stiff and structured for me personally and narrow in the upper body. Lands End has impressed me on the forum an I've seen at Sears but it doesn't fit me right.

Honestly this is why I bought the coat today - a well fitting peacoat is not that easy, at least for me, and I couldn't bear the idea of endless shipping and returns.

I tried on the Crew Majesty and the Lands End a couple of weeks ago. The Lands End was sized a bit more generously than the Crew, but the Crew was definitely higher in quality. I felt and saw it immediately-- softer fabric, beautiful buttons, well tailored lining. The Lands End is a very attractive, well made coat in its own right. ( I ended up thrifting a Calvin Klein, which I'm loving wearing.)

I hear what you are saying about the Loft one but I think the scarf collar makes it more casual than the others, which read dressier. Also I personally find that being able to remove my scarf is a bonus for my transit commute (I can cool down a bit without removing my coat). I do think #1 would be perfect for casual throw-on-and-go use - MOTG, walking the dog, whatever.

Well, I really like mine. I have the one without thinsulate lining and I would actually say it doesn't run big but TTS. I didn't size down at all, just got the petite. I also like the collar in #1, but I'm not sure if it wouldn't interfere with a scarf - how do you wear yours? Oh and the color of #2 is amazing.

I really like the J Crew one for you (figures, since it's the most expensive- sorry! )
Getting it for 25% off takes some of the sting out of it, anyway. My experience with J Crew coats is that the quality is quite good.
None of these will be too warm, though, since they're so short.

I live in a cold climate and snowy climate. My main winter outerwear is a black puffer and a black softshell coat by Miss SIxty. I have been considering adding a peacoat to my wardrobe for everyday wear. So when Loft recently had a 50% off everything sale, I came across this peacoat (image #1) http://www.loft.com/Wool%20Ble.....JOxpcy0xLo I tried it on in grey, and it was quite nice - the texture looks a bit rugged but I guess that is the idea of the design. I wanted the navy but it was sold out online and in store. Recently I found it in navy at the local store, and they are holding it for me (it is 40% off, so about $96). The coat is quite warm, and the collar makes it easy to stay warm even when it is windy.

I also ordered a JCrew Majesty peacoat during 25% off sale. It is was $225. I was not sure what color and size to try so went for the blue heather in 8; I figured I can always exchange for a different size or color.

I am also considering Landsend peacoat that Astrid has but have not tried it yet. The price would be about $100-$115, depending on whether it has extra thinsulate lining. I know that Landsend often runs big and boxy but the coat looks nice on Astrid so I am hopeful. Not sure what color would be best.

Does anyone have experience or thoughts with any of these coats? I know that Angie has a couple of JCrew coats, and Janet recently got one. Is the quality and fit worth the extra price?

ETA: here are photos of JCrew coat in size 8 (4) and Loft coat in M (5). The dark navy of the Loft coat is hard to photograph. I am not entirely sure about the size of the JCrew coat - it fits OK over the jacket (BR quilted moto) but I wonder whether size up would be better. It definitely does not have that immediate "Wow" factor that Janet's version of the same coat has - not sure if this coat is not quite right for my shape or whether the problem is with the photos I took. :)
