It's things like this that make me glad I can do my own alterations! Once when my sewing machine was broken, I took something to a local tailor and the job they did was so awful I couldn't wear the garment. I quickly had my machine repaired and never graced their doorstep again.
Sounds like you have a good relationship with this person, though, and I am glad you were able to work it out

Oh Shannon I must be hormonal or something but your update brought me to tears! I am so thrilled it all worked out (kind off) and I can only imagine how awful she must have felt. In the end it's relationships that really count in life and I would say that this little upset will only serve to better to relationship with this lovely lady.

Update: So I called Wonder Woman and asked if it would be ok if I popped in on my way home from work. I got thinking that a face to face would be much nicer and also because English is not her first language, sometimes speaking in person is easier for us both to understand rather than over the telephone.

I had the jeans in the car and stopped in and very calmly explained that I value her service and experience tremendously and have always been pleased with the results, and how I appreciate that she wanted to help by doing the tapering but that this resulted in changing the entire fit of the legs and it didn't work. She asked me to put them on for her so she could see and when I came out of the change room, she put her hand over her month and said "oh no no no no...". She was mortified and must have said "sorry" about 10 times. She is going to take out the tiny bit of seam allowance on each side (we're talking maybe an eight of an inch on each side) and then shorten them by one inch. This will still give me enough slouch but will bring up the hem enough to cut down on the taper. She is going to do this for no charge and in fact, reimbursed me the cost of the original hemming. I then told her that of course I want to hear her ideas and suggestions because she's the expert but in the future could she call me before doing anything that we haven't discussed. She totally agreed and promptly gave me a hug and a chocolate!

That is one CLASSY woman!

No seam allowance? Bummer!

Just a side note that just came to mind, which could be totally irrelevant but I'm just sharing. You know, my tailor sometimes makes decisions after we speak. Those are generally based on how the item behaves once he takes on the project. For instance, he just tailored a coat for me. We had agreed on a certain way to go about it, but then he realized the revised proportion would look off kilter with the lapel of the coat, so he went about it differently. I still liked it so I saw no issue.

Another time he decided to taper a pair of trousers to reduce the waist measurement, rather than putting darts, as we had agreed. I hated it! Thank the lord he had left the seam allowance intact, so he revised it. In retrospect, his way was better because, as a matter of fact, those pants make me feel frumpy, because they are a bit saggy. Tapering had resolved the issue, but alas!

He knows I don't want a call everytime he changes the plan, because I really don't know which way would look best. I would probably respond with a blanket " whatever you think is best", everytime. I'm ok with it because I know he leaves the seam allowance intact. I also like his aesthetic. He is a pretty young guy,who just came off design school and took over his father's business, so I rely heavily on his opinion on what looks modern. They are bespoke tailors too, which I love.

I think it is common for tailors to make such decisions. Just like a surgeon, they might change the game plan once they open the "patient" up.

In your case Shannon, you are not ok with that, and that is perfectly FINE and acceptable. I hope you had a good conversation with your tailor. Asking for a call to confirm changes to the plan should resolve the situation from now on.

Again, I'm terribly sorry about your jeans.

Oh your poor jeans! I agree with Shevia --- it's a disappointing situation and you do need to have that chat, but at the same time, it may be worth taking the jeans back next time you're going over to see if there's anything else she can do to make them work for you short of undoing the 'repair'.

unfrumped - just to be clear, she has not done any sort of alteration previously that I did not request. The tapering of the legs on my L&T slouchy trousers was explicitly at my request. This is the first time.Yes, she does make out a ticket and the one for these jeans just said "original hem". The thing is, she is stellar at what she does and has done wonders for many of my items (the blue lace dress and the Lord & Taylor trousers in particular).

I do want to make it clear that she please not do any alterations that we have not discussed but also want to preserve our working relationship and she is definitely the best seamstress I've worked with.

Angie - I was disapointed not to be able to wear the jeans. As you know, I was pretty pumped about them.

Wow. What a deal. I don't know if I'd be so forgiving. I do understand the need to preserve a good working relationship, though.

The point is, this is the warning sign. I would never have imagined "my" seamstress to alter a part of the garment we had not discussed. So, if that happens, you do have to be very clear or you could expect it to happen again. It's not realistic
to have a situation in which sometimes it's okay for her to use her judgement and sometimes it's not.

It also worries me that she did not seem to be aware of how the fabric "behaves". Ideally the seamstress is a kind of consultant who helps protect us from requesting alterations that won't look good.

That said, it might also help to start adding some phrases during fittings such as, do you have any other concerns about the fit we've got now? And also--does she make out a ticket with the alterations listed? For example, my ticket will show, hem, sleeve, waist, etc. Now, sometimes it might not be done the way I thought, but at least we have identified the area of the alteration.

So sorry and good luck.

This may not work at all, but can she possibly reopen the seam and add a triangle patch of some similar denim fabric back? At best up close it could look like a small, intentional design element, at worst from farther away, no one would really notice.

Zap - I did look at the inside of the seams on the bottom of the legs but there is nothing to be let out so I don't think it's repairable in that sense. However, I do think taking a bit of the length off the bottom will lessen the effect.

Not to worry my lovely YLFers, I promise to be kind and polite as I value Wonder Woman immensely. I think she just got overly enthusiastic!

Agree you should speak with her right away about the second pair and that she should not be offended. And please tell her about you issues with the first pair of jeans - she may have a creative suggestion to salvage them.

Yes, good luck Shannon. Often tailors here have no concept of PPL and take it upon themselves to ruin pants by cutting too much off. I've taken to having them measured with heels so that they are the right length for flats.
Your idea of taking some length off should lessen the bloomer look.

Agreeing with the others. Good luck! This kind of thing is never fun to deal with but I know your kindness will keep this from ruining your relationship with her.

So sorry, Shannon. I'm eager to hear how this turns out after you speak to her.
I work in the service industry, and let me assure you that we WANT to know when people are upset, as long as they're polite about saying it. My livelihood depends on you being happy with the service I've provided, so if no one tells me how to improve, I'm left to guess and infer.
Good luck getting this resolved.

Oh, Shannon - SO sorry this happened!! I hope it comes to a good resolution.

If the jeans will not work as is, perhaps you can make them into clams for summer wear and all will not be lost.

I'm relieved that your jacket is okay.

I know I sometimes have slight issues with Wonder Woman East, too. She's occasionally messed up on items either for me or for my husband. Usually all goes well, but she has been known to make her own decisions at times, too. Or to argue in the moment about how something should look. I guess it is a relationship. By and large we do well by our tailors compared to many.
