So far 80,000 have been flown out, from a country of 38,000,000. That’s about 0.2% of the population. Refugees are, by definition, highly motivated & willing to work hard. I hope these folks are well-received and get fair chances to settle & blossom, wherever they go.

Gentle Reminder: I know it's hard, and this topic is wrapped up in religion and politics, but please do not have involved political and religious discussions and debates in public threads on the YLF forum. These topics are too volatile for a fashion and style forum - even in Off Topic - and especially under the stress of the ongoing global pandemic. Feel free to have these conversations privately through the PM feature.

I have allowed this thread to continue because of the enormous emotion and solidarity we as women around the world feel for the women (and children) of Afghanistan. This is understandable and important.

Thank you for respecting the YLF Moderation Policy.

Please, let’s keep Islam separate from the Taliban! The way they twist things to claim religion supports their politics and social structure is sick. Muslims don’t support that any more than Christians support priests raping kids—not at all.

Fashintern- twitter feeds, facebook friends, etc. Afghans telling their friends in other countries what the situation is really like. I think BBC and NPR even has had some of this but I wasn't looking to save research, just trying to get some idea of the real situation before it fades into total oblivion by the Taliban.

In my opinion there is 0% reason to trust anything that the Taliban tells the media or anyone. Their religion (from my research) gives them "permission" to lie for their cause.

Most of the sources of information that have taken risks to report on the current situation will be taken over soon if not already.

Texstyle, where have you seen “unfiltered” news? My son is following some of the university students—they are the same age.
It makes me sick to know that women’s rights were so much more advanced there until my country decided that their international game of dominos—successor to “The Great Game” of earlier generations there, was more important and enabled movements that shut that progress down.
Women there are not leaving their homes now, though I don’t know if they’re going out with a chaperone.

ETA JAileen, our military has control of part of the airport now, where countries, not private companies, can fly in & out. Now we “just” need to step up and accept refugees. Right now we’ve said we’ll take less than a quarter of what we did after Saigon.

Fashintern -The only hope there is would be for the international community to choose to do something about it - and due to the huge amount of extremely valuable resources - lithium, uranium, etc. in the region - the only international interest seems to be China and Russia who want access to these materials. Electric cars are using primarily lithium batteries of course and uranium for nuclear.

We will soon likely stop seeing any "unfiltered" news from there as they have already stopped most of it. The Afghan people don't have many choices - they risk the lives of their family members and themselves if they do not stand with the new regime. They have already been marking the doors of women and others who they feel are a "threat" to their religious laws so they can come back and "deal with them". These are based on reports of the few people who were able to still communicate with friends outside of Afghanistan before being stopped. The public transport wouldn't even allow women in to try and get back home when it started. Women had to run (some for miles) from their workplaces to get home, trying to get there in time to destroy any evidence of involvement in anything considered against the new rule.

Part of me wants to hope that the generation that has come of age since this conflict began—the median age in Afghanistan is 18, so more than half the country was born after this war began—simply will not stand for the brutality of the Mujahadin/Taliban back when the US supported them. But I don’t know if I dare believe that.

Is anyone else as horrified and angered by what is happening in Afghanistan?

I haven't been here in a while but it's still primarily a spot where women of many nationalities are talking to one another. I can't be the only one feeling outrage and wanting something to be done. My heart is so heavy right now. As a women who suffered years of abuse when I was young I am just sick with pain for the women of Afghanistan right now. And feeling utterly and completely hopeless for them.

They are literally burning their life's work in an effort for it not to be discovered as they will surely be tortured and killed for their past 20 years of simply trying to live and educate themselves.

:-(
