That's a great picture with the skirt blowing in the wind. When the skirt falls, it will probably look appropriate, but I still wouldn't want to wear it to work--too hard to remember to check that the slit hasn't fallen open every time I fidget. I could go naked all day, but other people might be irritated by too much skin. (I once had so much conflict with someone that we both asked our supervisor to intervene. Turned out that one of the things that bothered her most was a slit on a particular garment. My desk was on a side wall, and it was a side slit, so when she walked past my office and looked in the open door, she saw the wide open slit and was offended, so wouldn't cooperate on work. True story).

That blue jacket is great. I'd wear it over a sheath dress or fit-n-flare. A sheath that fits well shows your shape some without being tight or restricting movement. I think fit-n-flare is as close as I can get to the big, full skirts I love and still look professional.

People at an advertising company might dress more "creatively" than other work environments. For me, that would make it harder to know what's ok, especially bearing in mind that compliments on my clothes could be good or could mean that my appearance is stealing the show from my work. Pay attention to what the women a level or two above you wear--cuts/fit, colors (including how much contrast between colors), whether there is pattern and what type (loud banana leaves/stripes/ subtle stripes/windowpanes, etc). Wear things like what you've seen a few times on people who are respected (but not all the way at the top--the company prez might have license to wear things others shouldn't).

Good luck on your first day!

Wow, the replies are all helpful. About my work, it’ll be a secretarial job in an advertising company here in my place. I’ll take note all of your suggestions. Thanks :)

Congratulations on your job! You've gotten some good advice, and, as Staysfit says, you'll need to dress carefully for work.

The sweater / jacket would be fine, the top is not appropriate, and the pants as shown on the model would be too tight. The rule of thumb for a workplace is to draw attention to your work skills and professionalism, not your figure or body. That means you may need to wear clothes that are looser and have more coverage than you might be drawn to for other areas of your life.

since i don't know what kind of office you will be working in, its a smidge difficult to give advice....but i will say that both the pants and blazer/sweater would work in my office, but the bandeau would not. change the top out for something that covers more chest area and all of the tummy area and for my office you would be good to go.

Hmm, when I clicked the first link it took me to a page with a lot of off the shoulder tops. The second link is to a woman wearing a white bandeau tube top with a soft sweater over it and white leggings. I'm not sure what type of work you do? If these were the correct links, they would probably be inappropriate for most work places.

I would try to figure out what other people in your line of work wear? What is it you want to do next? I would dress for your next role as much as possible. Wear things that indicate you are planning to move up, that you have the ability and skills to take on more, do not dress entirely for your current role unless that's where you plan to stay. Look forward always! Is the environment casual, smart casual, business casual, business formal? There have been some recent posts about this on the forum, so I recommend looking through old posts as well. In High School, my daughter worked as a biller in a medical office, she needed to dress appropriately for the office, which was much different from how she dressed everyday for school. She set her sights high. You may need to change your mindset to fit the work environment. Sadly, your appearance, and the impression you make does matter.

Congratulations on your first job! I think the blazer is a great choice. As Cat mentioned, the color can help you stand out, in a positive way. To me, it says professional and confidant. I would pair the blazer with either a knee length skirt, or a pair of high waisted, wide leg pants.

While you likely don't NEED to wear a skirt, a skirt can be an very good choice provided it is decent (= knee length or a little longer, no high splits, and not in a see-through material).

Do you know how other people at your new workplace dress? Do you have the possibility to, for instance, stand near the entrance of the building and watch people when they leave in the afternoon? Or perhaps you could call someone in the HR staff and ask? (I am sure they wouldn't mind. Generally, people appreciate that newcomers make an effort to fit in.)

By the way, I like the colour of the blazer. It shows some individuality while still being appropriate. It seems that many people turning up for a job interview or starting at a new workplace, think that they are supposed to wear navy, grey and black only (or perhaps with a white top/blouse). And of course, these colours are "safe". However, tasteful use of additional colours may you "stand out" from the rest in a positive way. (Being a former recruiter, I still remember great outfits worn by people I interviewed many years ago!) So if the colour suits you, go for that blazer! It can easily be combined with skirts, trousers and dresses in lots of neutrals.

Hi there,

Thanks for that, it really helps a lot. However, I was just thinking if aside from the pants/leggings, should I partnered it with a skirt?

Thanks

Wearing a blazer is a good choice and gives a serious/professional impression. However, I am afraid many will think that the leggings/pants are too tight and not businesslike.
