I'm watching the show with so much enjoyment. The period details and lighting, the costumes and countryside, everything visually draws me in. Mark Ryland played the lead in '12th Night' on Broadway and I was lucky to see it. The authenticity and spare stage really made Shakespeare feel natural. 'Wolf Hall' gives me the same intimate feeling. Love it. PBS hits a home run with this production.

I haven't read the book yet but will.

I didn't know what this was until today (clearing 1000+ emails from my inbox!). Anne Boleyn? That is straight up my alley. Now I have to check it out.

Oh, I didn't know they'd made it into a show. I tried to read the book but found it slow going. I must admit that it amuses the crap out of me that the books went as big as they have - who would have thought that centuries later the Cromwells would become a best-seller?

I struggled with the book. I liked it but it took me a while to get into it for sure. I'd never be able to read this on a plane!

I loved the book, and I am looking forward to watching the show. Maybe we will catch up online. I think it took me a try or two to get into the book - it's very dense and also dreamlike. I had to set aside time to read to really enter the world she created.
Mantel does an odd pronoun thing in Wolf Hall: she can refer to 3 or 4 men in a sentence (or paragraph) but "he" is always Cromwell.
I also have enjoyed CJ Sansom's Shardlake series, which are long mystery novels. Shardlake is a lawyer under Henry's reign and has an outsider's view of court & royalty.

Longer answer now.
Actually I didn't get into it the first try, but tried again on a long flight and was entranced. However part of the appeal is in the writing style, and I do wonder how they can translate that into a TV show/

Are you watching Wolf Hall on PBS? I love these types of programs and I think it is really well done. I ordered the book last night. Has anyone read it?
