As the python leggings enabler, I feel compelled to point out that they were $17.99 with shipping and cannot therefore be blamed for setting the budget askew. :)

If the leather pants are the thing that you're deeply undecided on, here are my two cents (and I'm going to sound like a total wet blanket here, sorry): no matter how fabulous -- which they are -- I would worry constantly about the upkeep on a leather item that's likely to need cleaning reasonably often. The leather jacket I just took to the cleaner's resulted in a bill of $42, and that's an item I would only be likely to clean every couple of years.

You're probably far better than I am about not spilling things on yourself, brushing against an oil-coated car door closure, and letting the kitty knead your leg, so take my neuroticism for what it's worth.

Mo, I think I felt like I had to do it all at once before because I was overhauling my entire wardrobe. I probably overbought in some areas, though I was wearing everything for a while. I could purge some more recent stuff but that is hard to do when I still like it, it is in good shape, I'm just not drawn to it right now. At this point I think I need to focus on seasonal updates and replacements for things that have worn out. That way I won't end up oversaturated with any one type of item that I might get bored of quickly.

Yeah, me too. I'm getting useful items - even a HEWI - but the monthly total is goggling. I have a couple things I am allowed to buy Feb-June and 2 more impulse spots and that's it (have to save for fall). I'm afraid I'll succumb to the lure of the impulse/cheap purchase. It's the fear of missing out on another HEWI that keeps me looking.

This would be my 1st year of trying a yearly/seasonal approach, too, so I'll be watching to see if you have any clever strategies. I've always admired your self-discipline in taking shopping breaks when necessary to catch up. All that to say, I need someone to keep me accountable too!

You are an inspiration Mo for budgeting and planning! Especially since I am in my newly joined YLF phase and going gaga over everything (of course in a way that fits me better now) - I think identifying so early that you have gone overbudget is half the battle won! The problem is when you wake up too late - and I dont see that happening with you! So enjoy your finds!

Rita, I remember you having overhauled your closet. I didn't know that you have now moved on from a lot of it. Why do you think that is? Do you think you overbought in some of the categories or do you just think your overall style is changing? Or some of both?
I try to keep myself from over saturation. I have to remind myself like a mantra sometimes: light neutral, dark neutral, color or pattern. Stop. Wear. Reevaluate. Lol

I went through a major wardrobe overhaul when I joined YLF 3 years ago. Now I'm finding that I don't really wear alot of the clothes I acquired at that time. My style has changed quite a bit in that time. I feel like I should be hugging my closet, but I find that I am no longer interested in dresses, cardigans, or pencil skirts. I bought alot of oversized sweaters and various skinnies this winter.... lots of the jeans were replacements for things that either didn't fit or were worn out. I don't really count them towards my total but all together I have already spent a surprising amount in a very short amount of time. I guess I am still going through a period of change - and spending goes right along with that.

Oh, well I'm not alone I see! If indeed I am to succeed at a yearly budget, with seasonal fluctuation, I will have to master this.
Monthly budgeting is easier to keep track and hold yourself accountable. But the reason I went with yearly was precisely so I could get the rare big ticket item like those Vince pants. I now have to learn how to work around that with easing off for a few months.
I'm convinced I can do it. So many others succeed with season shopping. I'm hoping I can too. And the rest of you who find yourself in a similar boat.
Heck, I'm still not repeating outfits, which was a big goal of mine for the year, so I know I have enough stuff. Plenty of stuff.

I think it is really hard b/c with all the focus on year start planning/goals I have usually just identified some wardrobe holes and I want to get them remedied. When i write things down i seem to get a little OCD hunting them down IYKWIM.

Mmm... I was just thinking I need to go update my year's shopping plan thread too. Did a quiet bit.... quite a bit!... of buying this month too. Not gone way out on a limb or anything but it is a good chunk out of my modest budget and I bought one or two 'extras'.

I can imagine the feeling of where you find yourself. But at least you are set for spring and have fabulously exciting items like the tunic and leather pants as well as solid versatile workhorses like the blazer and tank etc...

I can relate. I am 4.6 months ahead of mine (and in my case that was from one item (shoes) that I bought in december. As it is sandals weather I haven't even worn them yet! All I bought in January were some sports socks. However I just got a reward voucher which I am planning to spend on a new work out outfit as mine haven't been upgraded since 2011. If I have any left I'll upgrade my flat sandals, which were bought in Jan 2012 and are beginning to look shabby.

Thistle - your January splurge was completely planned for and saved, so no problems there!

And Mo that tunic does look great

The first thing I thought of when I read the beginning of your post was that the leather pants are the culprit here! If you think about it, those pants would be the equivalent cost of several items for you (if I remember right from your previous post of how you spend, you spend about $30 on tops and maybe a little more than that on bottoms?).

Your BF will get used to them. No worries. :^)

I know what you mean. I seem to have spent, spent, spent this month. I said in Dec I wasn't going to buy any more summer tops as I had enough - since then I've bought four more ..... which I am justifying as they are all in my new colour scheme of black and grey and all are good for my travel capsule for Europe in June.

I have also bought five pairs of pants in the last two months but they are certainly justified as I have lost weight and once I bought one pair of pants that fitted properly I saw that I needed to toss all my old pants that I was making do with (have gone down two sizes and was just running the legs in and adding elastic to the waist - so NOT flattering).

So as you can see advice from me would be useless. I can understand you wanting to stick to a budget, but your budget is quite modest so if it needs tweaking for those killer leather pants than I think its justified.

Oddly, I'm still on budget for the year, just WAY ahead of the monthly rate of spending it. I spent just shy of $1800 last year and looking to go lower to $1500 or $1600 this year. I agree that an item such as leather pants is bound to skew things.
Update: I introduced my BF to them this afternoon. His response, " I like the suede part." LOL. I basically asked what the trouble is he has with leather pants. It went along the lines of - it just doesn't look good/only other women like them on women/it's a trying too hard look. Sheesh. So I said, "if I were to have leather pants, don't you think these are nice quality, classy ones?". Response: "if you like them you should keep them". That's a good boy! :)

But then, you know, 8+ months of winter here, so I plan for it. And yes, winter is more expensive. Cashmere versus cotton

Mo - only you can decide what to do. However, leather pants are very hard to fit and find at a price point that does not totally decimate the bank. If it were me, which it is not so feel free to totally disregard, I would definitely keep the leather/suede pants. I would evaluate the other purchases. If you love them and do not need spring stuff then I would go on SYC for as long as it takes to catch up. But you know yourself best and in your heart you know what you should and what you really want to do!! Good luck and you know you'll make the best and right choice!!
