I am down 2 pounds. Not much, but definitely a change. I also have TTOM right now so that may be part of it. My husband says he can tell I've lost weight--he says I look thinner in my face. Ready for week 2!

Anne I'm glad you are feeling better about things now. Your body is gorgeous, slim and petite so you have no reason to fret. I hope you continue to see that!!

Last week the number on my scales was scary. Yesterday I was down 2kg, but my jeans were not fitting well. Today is TTOM so I'm hoping that's what the havoc was, although the thighs were fitting tight as well as the stomach.

I have been eating badly, and exercising little thanks to my knee and my general laziness. Yesterday I went for a 13km walk though, and the knee feels fine today. I'm going to go to a gym today and find an exercise bike - this will be my first gym visit all year!! I can't let the knee and the cold weather here be a continuing excuse for doing nothing!!! As of next week I'm allowed to get back on my proper bike too - yay! I'm also going to try and start recording my food intake. I do ok in the mornings, but get lazy by the end of the day!!

I wanted to give Maya a big thanks for all the time she spent on my questions on this thread. I am afraid they were written while I was having an unhealithily obsessive, selfish and introspective stay at home day. I am not really in that place anymore - and I am sorry for all my "overthinking".

Magda- I find it very common to have a concentrated loss in one area for a while, then another area will start losing and catch up. This has been the way that my entire 64 pounds has gone, so don't be worried at all- your hips and bust will catch up in time.

Congrats to all gals who are doing great! I love you.

I promised myself that I wouldn't check my weight or measurements near TTOTM, but I just felt that something was changing. I couldn't resist. I ate healthy and worked out. Yay! I suspect that I'll be even smaller next week.

I lost about 1.5 kg, and my measurements went down again. I'm 40-27.5-41 now. This is a bit disturbing. My waist is going smaller almost every single day, but bust and hips measurements don't change that much.

Anne, you are overthinking things! You also have to consider differing lifestyles and food quality when discussing genetics. Sure your mum was smaller, but I'm sure her mum was smaller than she is. How far back are you going to go? Again, it's a guideline. My mom was 95 pounds, as I said, but my goal is not 95 pounds. I have adjusted to a more realistic number, taking into consideration what is viable for me.

There is also no one magic number that shows up on the scale and equals "healthy." There is a range, and even that can be vague. if I don't lose any more weight than I have lost by now, I won't be discouraged. Having a goal is only important in terms of having a tangible measure of your progress. It isn't the only factor though. I also take into consider how my clothes fit, what my energy level is like, am I feeling healthier, etc. If you are overweight or obese, it becomes more important, but I am not and neither are you so I think we need to keep a more open mind. We are essentially going from "healthy" to "more healthy" rather than "unhealthy" to "moderately healthy" to "healthy" etc. I don't know if that makes any sense.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "filling out" your ribcage?

You can have a small frame and wide set hips or a wide ribcage. It doesn't necessarily mean you need more flesh to cover them.

Oh here's another thought. I think I have put on weight since moving away from the city, where we only had one car. We lived in an area on a bus route and close enough to most places I need to go so I could walk there with a pram. Even though I wasn't jogging or swimming then I had several car-less days each week. Then I moved a town where I just about drive everywhere (I could walk more than I do (most places are within 5 minutes drive, and some people do (I have met a few mums do can't drive here, which I never had before), but I haven't allocated that much time for travel in my life. Plus walking takes much longer with a 2 and 4 year old!

Maya,
Thanks for your detailed answer. It really helped me understand your thought processes. FWIW my wrists were only just under the 6".

The genetic argument is a big one for me too, My Mum was about 105 pounds (at 5"3) when she fell pregnant with me and while that was partly the result of travel ling overland through Asia (she and Dad did the 70's Aussie overseas thing) She maintained a weight of around 110 or so when she was in her 30's and had 3 kids (ie like me) She was (and is) active, and ate healthily and normally and I never recall her dieting, as such. Her sister is and father was even leaner.

I see where you are coming from with the frame argument, but it still seems to me that when it comes to determining weight then how your ribs (or hips for that matter are arranged must make a difference. Wouldn't you need more body to filll them out?

Katja agree that BMI is a good starting point if you are overweight. (And I believe that there are health benefits to say, reducing your weight by 10% if you are obese, even if that doesn't get you officially into the healthy weight range). And I am exactly in the position of working out what, in the range, would be healthy for me

That article you linked to was really helpful. I decided to test my body fat percentage ( I have one of those Tanita scales that measure it, but I hadn't done it for literally 7 years!) I think there are some question marks over their accuracy, but perhaps it is okay to use them for comparative purposes over time) I was 24%, btw.

Thanks again for your detailed replies

PS I like skinny guys too. My DH was only 64kg (141lb) at 6'1 when I started going out with me at 21. At our wedding (after 8 months in Japan) he weighed 127 -prompting numerous comments. He is about 163 now, aged mid 30's. I don't think he'll ever get big all over - the danger will be that he will be a skinny guy with a big tummy!

Anne, like Maya, I use BMI as a starting point. Maybe part of the decision depends on where you're starting from. If your current BMI is above 30 (as mine was when I began working on weight loss), there's not much question but that it will be healthy to get that down.

Now that I'm hovering right around a BMI of 25 (the line between "normal" and "overweight"), I still have no problem believing that it would be a good idea to reduce that measurement somewhat.

If, on the other hand, you're currently at 22 and are agonizing about whether to shoot for 18 or 20, then maybe you need to move to a more accurate metric - body fat percentage. I found this article about how to recognize that you're "done" enlightening (caveat: it is sort of bikini model oriented, but still contains useful information): http://joshsgarage.typepad.com.....-stop.html He talks about body composition goals, not weight goals.

Anne, there is so much to think about it can be overwhelming! I sympathize. Part of my analysis was also based on genetics. My parents were both extremely slim at my age...underweight by most standards (dad was 120, mom was 95, 5'7 and 5' respectively). I don't think BMI is a hard and fast rule. It's a guideline, to be taken into consideration with other factors. If you simply can't get down to your ideal BMI weight no matter how hard you try, then you probably were not meant to be that weight. I was always struck by how, whenever I would read reviews on UO.com, the reviewers who were my height and former weight (5'2 and 115) were all wearing XS's and often complaining about how they were too big, while I was in S's and sometimes M's. Their weight was more bone than fat, and mine was more fat than bone (that's an oversimplification but you get my drift).

Bear in mind that pregnancy expands the ribcage, which is why some women lose a defined waist after having kids, so the expanse of your ribcage isn't any indication of frame size, even pre-pregnancy. Frame size is about how large your bones are, not how they are distributed as such.

As for wrist size being equivalent to frame size: Not always. In my case it is true (being only 5.25" around), but I read that elbow breadth is more accurate. The problem is that it is much harder to accurately measure. If you google it you'll find information on how the measurement is done. I do not have a caliper, but I can tell I am not even close to being medium. Also, my whole life I have not been able to wear rings or bracelets because they are always too big. That may not be the best gauge but it definitely is a clue.

Thanks Laura and Maya.
I am a bit sceptical of the wrist size thing. I am sure I have seen people who seem bigger boned around the torso with tiny wrists and ankles. Anyway according to that link I am "small frame". But looking at my ribs (where I do not have any visible fat), compared to say Angie or Maya, I am clearly not that small a frame.
Also there isn't a link to find out where the frame size links in from the weight anyway (unless I have missed it)
How did you find out that you had light bones Maya?

Sorry if I seem a bit obsessed with these questions. I've been rather out of control, and need to rein things in and wanted to know where you were coming from. And I remember a discussion a while back on BMI where Medusa and Ana picked all sorts of mathematical problems with it ( I am afraid I didn't follow their arguments completely)

Anne, I used a BMI calculator only as a starting point. My bones are lighter and make up a smaller than average percent of my weight compared to most people. That's probably why most women who were my starting weight and height looked slimmer than me and had smaller measurements than me, even though we had the same numbers on the scale. I'm trying to get to the lowest weight possible according to BMI but I could probably go even lower.

If I were medium-framed, my starting weight would have been fine. BMI offers a range and I chose which end of that range I belong in based on frame size. It's worth mentioning that one of the limitations of BMI is that it does not distinguish muscle from fat, but since I am not even remotely muscular, this was not an issue for me.

Anne, you can find out your frame size by measuring your wrist, and your frame size does play into how much you should weigh for your height. Here's how to measure your frame, from a website that seems reputable:

Katja, I seem to eat more with events too! My last 2 longer races I haven't lost any weight overall in the preparation.

Maya you are now much tinier than me everywhere else too. I am 33- 28-37. I don't think I'll ever be as small as you (my frame is larger, I am about 30 inches in the underbust if I breathe out) but I was a little discouraged to notice looking at an old diary, five years ago,(about 16 months after baby #1), I was a couple of pounds lighter and 34-27-36. Obviously my bust won't be going up but I wonder if I can get the other measurements back.

When you said that you picked the lowest applicable weight was this using BMI or some other measure? Depending on whether you take 18 or 20 as the lowest BMI I would need to lose either 4-7 kg or 10-15 pounds but I am not sure I should personally aim for that since I am not tiny framed. I do know that I am considerably more than my mother was at my age and that I can't be said to be eating healthily consistently.

I am up about 3-4 pounds :-(. Part of that is because my period's approaching, but most of it is due to all the eating I've been doing the last two weeks - somehow these athletic events (my first 10K and my first sprint triathlon) have come with a lot of food attached.

So back to the regular regimen now, and hopefully I'll be able to get rid of the excess and continue moving done.

I've updated my weight loss goal after looking at all the pictures of myself from the last two weekends. I'm at 160, with a goal of 150 (so close! haven't been anywhere near 150 for 25 years), but I'm revising that down to 140, which is a BMI of about 22, so totally realistic.

Anne, that's so funny. I had to take that measurement over and over again, and even ask my mom to verify because I couldn't seem to believe it or wrap my head around it. I am still having trouble believing all these measurements. I keep thinking maybe I just didn't measure at the right time, in the right place, or maybe I read the numbers incorrectly. I guess my brain is just slow to catch up.

I'm going to Macy's this week--not to shop but to try on a pair of size 26 jeans. Being able to put them on my body and see and feel how they fit will probably be the jolt I need.

Well done Khris and Maya (Can you believe it - we have the same bust measurement now!)

I am going really badly. A couple of weeks ago I decided to try the lowish carb diet that many people here warned me against. I followed it, in a fashion for about a week, losing about 1.3 kilos and achieving my goal and then have abandoned it spectacularly, putting at least a kilo on and being quite uncontrolled. Also it has been so cold (for here) that I haven't gone running for a week. I am pretty unhappy about all this. The cold weather also makes me want lots of hot, starchy food!

Wow Khris, congratulations. You must be THRILLED! Are you going to celebrate???

And Maya that is a fantastic effort as well. So inspiring that small changes can add up over time.

I really need to kick my butt into gear on this challenge. I've been using my sore knee as an excuse for a few months. Something I can't continue to do after this week hopefully!!! Of course that doesn't account for my eating poorly at all, does it?

Excellent. I'm still the same weight but I'm not worried. At this point it will go fairly slowly, since I only have 3 pounds left.

My starting measurements were:

35.5
27
37

My current measurements are:

33 (yes, at the fullest part of my bust...wild huh?)
25
35.5

Sadly the just-below-the-waist pouchy flab doesn't seem to be going down so easily. I might need to get back into yoga again to help with that. But overall, I am beyond ecstatic and impressed with myself. I never thought in a million years I could be this small again.

Congratulations Khris! You are looking so amazing in all your pictures, and I am constantly impressed about how focussed you are about your weight loss efforts.

Rute: fingers crossed, if your clothes are feeling looser, then the numbers on the scale are bound to follow.

Well I am down 5 pound from last week- thank goodness! I was all kinds of bloated. I'm back down to my all time low weight, and now I just need to break through it. I am down 4 pounds since the beginning of last month, but my measurements haven't changed.
How is everyone else doing?
