Greenglove- don't beat yourself up. I'm a stress/binge eater, and it is really hard. I ate a whole pack of Milano cookies last night!

agrace- I do find that counting calories works for me, and is easy to do. I've been doing this long enough that I know the calorie count of most of the foods that I eat regularly , and I also know what a lunch or dinner of 400-500 calories (which is usually what I am for) looks like, generally speaking. At first, I would go through and make up meals/snack from the calorie calculator. I then knew that I could pick any of those meals or snacks and be ok. I also find that pre-logging my food works better for me than logging after the fact. I usually start with my dinner and enter that before I have eaten anything, then do the rest of the day's meals/snacks based on that. Since I'm the one cooking, I usually know what I am going to make for dinner.

I'm really surprised to hear that those of you who are 5'5 and up are in the same range as I am at 5'2. According to the Mayo Clinic calculator, I need 1750 calories to maintain my weight at my current activity level, and 1600 if I were totally sedentary. I am currently taking in around 1400 and I'm losing weight.

I really need to get a weight measurement since it's been a while. I'm not one that likes to weigh daily or weekly, but it's been at least a couple of months.

On the exercise front, I've picked up my running where I left off two weeks ago. You'd think being on spring break (i.e. more personal time) I'd have run. But no. I took a little road trip. I took classes. I had zero motivation to run. Alas, I'm back on track and have run the past three nights.

I'm still not counting calories. It works for me, but I haven't found the motivation to do it consistently.

Greenglove - LOL frosting out of a can - aka my favorite college thing to eat and I did so a few weeks ago. Horrible I know!

Well you are all a wealth of knowledge. Chewy, I find it very intriguing what you said about starvation mode. I think I am guilty of this.

So you all find sparkpeople helpful? The whole calorie counting thing just seems like so much work. Does it help you and make it easier?? Thanks!

Hmm,
I am following this. I am a big time emotional eater which has been horrible this week due to anxiety. I just ate frosting out of a can! I can relate to everyone. I know it looks as if I do not need to lose but when I am up a few pounds- my best jeans are not comfortable and I resort to more comfortable not so great looking ones. I may join although right now I am getting inspired by all of you.

Ele and Khris - thanks! I am actually going to buy a pair of scales tomorrow. I've always dreaded scales since I've always been on the heavier side - not obese or even very overweight, but being of heavy build I always weighed more than my friends, which made me feel fat. Even my doctor commented on that; "Wow, you're kind of heavy! But you don't look fat!"

However I realize now that it is the best way to monitor my weight and weigth loss progress. By the way I was really happy this morning when I fit into a pair of jeans that were too tight just 4 weeks ago!

Ele- one of my favorite things about sparkpeople.com is that there is a sister site with a recipe calculator generator. Once you have entered your recipe and figured out the calories, you can then add that food to your favorites and add it to a meal with just a click. I cook a lot from scratch, so this is essential for counting my calories.
Tam- that does seem low if you are exercising. I started out with the recommendation that sparkpeople gave me, then I have adjusted as I went along. Right now, I am aiming for 1300-1500, but I am hardly exercising at all.'
Nanne- welcome aboard!

Hmmm Ele thats an interesting point...maybe I should compare what other sites recommend as well. What calorie range do other people aim for? And do you adjust calorie intake up to account for exercise done? For example calorieking tells me that for the 30min jog I did this afternoon that I should eat another 350 calories (making my total 1700. Does that sound more reasonable? Then for days where I do no exercise (hopefully not many) to go with the 1350 goal.

Ele I know what you mean about working out home cooked meals. Nightmare! I made satay tofu the other night and plan to have a helping for lunch tomorrow. Have no idea how to figure it out easily, especially when it ends up being different every time I cook it!

p.s. those brownies have me DROOLING! hehe reckon theyd survive the trip to Australia?

Nanne, there are no requirements for the WLS threads! Someone (usually Khris, as she's very on top of things) will start a thread check-in every Monday. We share whether we're up/down since the previous week, our exercise goals for the week ahead, thoughts on food- whatever, really.

Tam- 1350 sounds ridiculously low for someone of your height, especially with all the exercise you do! I'd get a second opinion because even I need more than that to maintain my weight (though probably less to loose). I'd be worried about your body going into starvation mode on that little energy.

I'm finding the food thing very, very hard. I can run and be active no problem, but thinking about actually counting calories makes me so depressed, not to mention confused. I'm a food blogger and general foodie, so it's not like it's easy for me- figuring out how many calories are in a portion of homemade curry or something is next to impossible. I eat healthy food but love treats, too. I really don't want to drastically change the kind of food I make, or my blog will suffer (because readers expect the odd indulgent treat, you know?). Portion control is really my best option, but for me it's so tough.

I find that my calorie range needs frequent adjustments. If I'm not eating enough, rather than loosing huge amounts of weight (which is what you would expect) I will hold onto weight. This is consistent with the theories about your body going into "starvation mode" without enough calories. If I am into this starvation mode without realizing it, and I "overeat", my body will suddenly drop weight because it has been kicked out of the starvation mode of holding onto fat.

So I decided today I'd copy Ele, and just track my food, not try to change what I eat. I've got the day off, so I'm at home, and do eat more than I do at work, because heaven forbid I actually get to sit down and eat between 8am and 8pm!!

Aaaaannyway its just gone 2pm and I've eaten 1083 of the 1350 calories CalorieKing has recommended for me for today. I'm going out tonight too - argh!! This could be where the problem lies hey!!!!

Not sure what is going on with my efforts. Yesterday and the day before I was up over 2 pounds, nearly back to my starting point. I had been away and could easily find culprits - 2 fast food meals, a dessert so rich I couldn't finish it, lots of muffins and a few days off running. So not pleased
But today I was down 2 pounds to the lowest point I have yet reached (twice before though) and that was after having quite fatty meat last night.

I might join in, too - I've put on quite a lot of weight over the winter months, and I'm not happy with it!! Like yublocka I haven't actually checked my weight on the scales yet - come to think of it I actually don't own one - but I'll get to it, eventually. My goal is to lose 15 pounds, and so far what I've done is to slowly start changing my eating habits and pay attention to what I eat. Since the word "dieting" makes me cringe, I'd rather look at the whole process as a change of lifestyle, which I think makes sense because a healthy weight loss is as much about eating the right things as well as eating the right amount. And, yes, I haven't exercised for months, so I have to start doing that as well!

Welcome aboard, Katie!

For anyone who is stuck or frustrated- just hang in there. Sometimes the key is upping your calories (especially if you've added exercise), and sometimes it's taking away- like after loss. Every so many pounds lost, you will probably have to shift your calorie range down. It's a process, so don't give up!

Count me into the frustrated group! My scale isn't budging at all and I'm about to start pulling my hair out (would that help lighten it, you think?). I've decided to do a little experiment this week: daily weighings first thing in the am, plus a food journal. The aim isn't to restrict calories (yet), but rather to see where I'm going wrong so I can do something about it.

(Basically, although my weight is in its healthy BMI range, because of a newly diagnosed medical condition, I need to try and get my weight down to the lower end of the range. That would mean a weight-loss of around 4 - 6kg.)

I'm down 3.2 pounds from where I started, though I always take it with a grain of salt. It seems to take a while for my weight to stabilize, which is why I write how much I'm down overall rather than how much I'm down week-to-week. I'm shocked though. March has been a naughty month for me due to the festivities. First my birthday (which resulted in my eating an entire cake over the course of one week), then my parents' anniversary dinner, and yesterday's Nowruz/Persian New Year feast! I ate 4 or 5 pakoras, which are deep fried goodness, yesterday. I'm dreading how those will show up...

I'm walking a LOT more now that the weather is nice though, so I think that is helping.

I'm down 1.8 pounds this week and I'm VERY surprised. I'm at home and my mom's cooking is very oily... I keep telling her to tone it down but she doesn't get it. Sigh. But it seems like I'm still doing okay!

I'm so happy! I'm down a size! Today I dressed for the first time a pair of Jeans size 6 I had bought to keep me motivated! It feels good and I'm even more motivated to continue my daily workout!

I'm feeling your frustration, Khris. I gained 0.4 pounds this week. I was much more active last week and largely stayed on plan, but definitely had a couple of emotional eating days (one of my periodic depressive phases is in force right now and I have to learn to deal with it properly). It's also totm, so that may be a factor. I'm frustrated with my lack of recent progress, but still hopeful I can get the scale moving downward again. Just one good week would kick my motivation right back up.

Is it Monday already? I'm up half a pound from last week. I've been losing and gaining the same two pounds all week, so I think it's time to move my calorie range down a bit again.
How is everyone else doing?
