Oh Khris ...your emotional *plate* is very full:( You are just trying to cope.

I don't understand emotional eating, so I am going to relate as an emotional shopper.....I feel instantly happier ...almost a rush of adrenaline, even if I purchase a lipstick...if it is a very high priced item I will often have buyers remorse.

So I am guessing that ...At first the yummy food makes you feel good, but if you over eat the joy is short lived and guilt sets in?

We are all prone to such things I suppose...the good news is ...you are still losing weight...and I never spend beyond what I can pay off each month..

No actually he's been living on his own since he was 19. He still needs some help and checking up on etc. and works part-time. He's doing quite well but will I think always some of our input.

Angie I really do find fashion therapeutic. It's my hobby and my "me" time. Water aerobics is basicly what the aquatics classes at the gym are. It might actually be good for ds, too.
Eveline I have looked into T-Tapp. It looks very effective, but it's not something that I am interested in. A tiny house and kids constantly underfoot are why I joined the gym. I just can't get it done at home. Does your son still live with you?

Hi Khris, Maybe try looking into T-Tapp.com? It's a very rehabilative form of exercise from the inside out and very sculpting. I've been doing it for 6 months and it's very different but challenging and fun, and effective. I know how stressful life can be, I have a 30 yrs old son who has asperger's syndrome and he can still be a handful.

This all sounds extremely stressful, Khris. It’s a miracle that you’re keeping it together as it is – and so stylishly to boot. I guess that the distraction is welcome and necessary.

I have no input to offer on stress eating but I was going to mention the pool. How about water aerobics?

Thanks Marianna

I don't enjoy lap swimming at all, but the new branch of my gym has a pool where they have aquatic classes. I had already started to consider switching my membership, but because it is more expensive it will have to wait a couple of months. DH's schedule wouldn't allow for me to get to these classes right now (so no need to pay the extra fee), but by March it should settle down and I can switch. That's the only place around here that I know of where you can swim year round.

Gum chewing does have a similar effect, and I am a chronic gum chewer, too. Because gum is soft and doesn't have as much resistance, I find that something harder works better for me- hence the carrots.

I don't keep foods in the house that I don't want to end up eating at some point, so it's not that I'm eating junk- I'm just eating more than I should.
Thanks for the book recomendation, I'll check it out.

I have done much better (and dropped a couple of pounds) the last two days. I think that it helped just to put it all out there, ya know?

I don't know a lot about emotional eating. Is it tied to particular foods? I ask because I wonder if simply having healthy foods around might mitigate calorie intake, at the very least.

I found a FABULOUS book - which I think every WL gal on YLF should RUN out and get...don't be put off by the title, but it's called - Fiber Up, Slim Down.

http://www.amazon.com/Preventi.....038;sr=8-1

I have made a half dozen recipes out of this book, and loved every one. I am very happy to find healthy alternatives to some child food favorites (like mac n cheese and hamburgers).

Hugs. You really sound like you're going through the mill at the moment.
This is not from experience but have you tried swimming as exercise? My friend swears by it for relaxation and your body is supported by the water while you work out.
That's really intresting about the chewing for stress relief, explains a lot about comfort eating. Would chewing gum give the same 'relief? 'x

I am the Queen of emotional eating/stress eating/boredom eating/happy celebratory eating/eating just because. Obviously I haven't found a way to battle this yet or I'd be a lot thinner. So I have no advice, but I wanted to let you know that I'm right here with you in this struggle. And I'm sorry about all the medical hardships you and your family are going through.

As much as I hate to admit it, I am an emotional eater. For the most part, I have learned to manage this. In times of stress, I catch myself going back to old habits. I have been struggling with this for the last few days. I spent Tuesday at the hospital with dd- she was having an upper GI and small bowel barium study. It took longer than expected (we were there 7 hours), and even though the results were immediate, her doctor won't be in to read them until next week. DS has his first appointment with a rheumatologist on the 11 (and both the kids specialists are at a medical center an hour away- which creates it's own set of stressors), and in the meantime I have developed chronic joint pains, but am afraid to get anything done about it because of all of the other medical issues that the kids are having right now (our regular doctor also wants dd to see an ENT because fo achronic stuffy/runny nose). Every time we go to the doctor, we end up with a partial bill- even though we have insurance. We are just now finished paying off all of the testing that dd had done last year, and starting on a new round of testing for both her and ds. The joint pain has caused me to fall off of my gym schedule, so I need to find ways to start fitting activity back into my life (thank goodness for the Wii). Exercise used to be the way that I dealt with stress, but now I don't even want to go because I am in so much pain afterwards. I also know from our dealings with Occupational Therapists for the kid's sensory issues, that chewing/biting creates deep pressure in your body that can be calming. I am going to pick up some baby carrots to chomp on so that I can get some of that deep pressure without consuming a ton of extra calories. So, I have a plan- I just have to follow through, and let go of the rest. Easier said than done.
What ways do you deal with stress and emotional eating?
