Sounds like you worked out a good solution for yourself. I'm sure you'll have fun wearing the pullover this winter. And I understand the need to taper the pants, I think you'll enjoy wearing them so much more afterwards!

Thanks everyone.

MsKatieKat :: I'm happy my words resonated with you, I always wonder whether I'm rumbling too much about certain wardrobe issues and if my realisations make sense to anyone else.

The outcome & learnings from this thread are:

1. The black jeans will be tapered. Bigger fold just doesn't work for me and I won't post photos as I'm not seeking feedback for that - it simply is not me, as this moment in time. In the future - who knows.

2. I have realised that no matter how I want to wear my jeans, they have to be of the right length for me. I actually have another pair of straight jeans, my favourite white pair, which I peg often. But they are 2" longer, so there is room for crisp fold. With the black pair from this thread, I can't achieve the same effect because there is not enough length to achieve the neat fold. This realisation bombs my hopes that I may get away with shorter jeans in some styles, so folding or no folding - yes, MsKatieKat - I need the length.

3. The grey sweater stays. It does not cling much to my skinnies, which have smoother surface than the black pair, hubby gave it (reluctant, but still) pass, and I have in the meantime realised I desperately needed another fluid top. It matches or works great with a wide range of my scarves too. I expect one winter from it and know I'll have fun while playing with the hole filler until better version comes my way.

Hello lovely! Nice to see you. I see that you've already gotten a lot of good advice, but wanted to chime my own two cents on the pants.

I soooo feel you on straight legs. I also strongly dislike how I look in them, and generally refuse to wear them. That said, my favorite BF jeans are sized up straight legs and the way I deal with the roll is to peg-roll (where you fold either the side or back over a bit, and THEN roll over the top. Examples of mine: 1 | 2 | 3). Regarding your particular roll, I think the volume of it is too much, as in, it is sticking out from you legs too far out. So either make the roll longer vertically so you don't need as much fabric, or roll it lower to do a mix of roll/scrunch (more examples of mine: 1 | 2) and wear with a low contrast shoe/bootie.

Great to see you Ornella, unfortunately I missed your previous threads, so went back and read them now! Sorry for the troubles in the schoolyard, but You are a great parent and hope it will be all sorted now you have spoken to the teacher and DS will forget the not so cheerie happenings asap. Am also excited to hear you'll go back for work! Did you interviewed already? Wish you all the good luck with your actual projects you have in your life (DS, carrer &new house), it's gotta be a busy but rewarding end of year for you.

Now, about the business. I can understand your aversion to rolled hems, but actually I like them in nr.1 quite a lot! Sorry it made you feel that frumpy, it's not at all to my eyes, but it really depends on how you feel. Not all the panst have to be rolled up, you know. If you don't like to roll then don't roll, it's that simple. Thus, will be curious how do you fell the rolls, trying again when tappered a bit more on the legs. I am also on the fence with straight legs, bootcuts feeling odd and never ever found real BF jeans. So, I rolled up my relaxed skinnies instead, and loved them dearly. So you can experiment some further.

I like the sweater. With that curvy it is not too short but I cannot feel the quality, so you'll surelly know better if will do the work even if for only a season or not.

The puffer vest is awesome. Curious how will look like over your leather jacket. Great ideea, with my apple tendencies it never occured me to do that:-).

Hi Ornella, you look great, I've always admired your classic minimal style. I prefer the unrolled pant leg, it better suits your uncomplicated sleek style.

As for the sweater, I like it on you a lot. I think its length, style and color are quite perfect on you. As far as the fabric goes, is it completely acrylic or a blend? Blends can be quite fine. I do allow myself lower quality things, as I don't keep a minimal closet, rather try to practice one in, one out. If it only lasts one season, and I hadn't paid much for it to begin with, it's really easy to let it go when I feel done with the item. In fact that is what I like about lower to middle range things, I don't feel as committed and it's easy to let go.

So now you see both sides of the argument, as I do see Claire's point as well.

Ornella - First. You are being too hard on yourself. You could wear a sack and still look good :). The rolled jeans may not be your fabbest outfit ever .... BUT .. It is not anywhere close to frumpy either! You have legs that can pull off any length of pants IMO.

I love the black jeans full length, with the extra scrunch ... You know ...This rolling thing ... I find it's overdone. I get frustrated at times trying to roll every single pant only to realize it looked better unrolled. Not every jeans needs to be rolled you know ;). If you do wish to roll, I agree with Inge on a wider one. Also, I think it could work well with a little skin show. May be you could try it and post some pictures before going the tapering route?

Cool vest BTW

Ornella! I truly resonated with this:

"Short pants are my own perception of frump on me, so coupled with the sensation of all that extra fabric fluttering around and away from my ankles had awaken the old frustrations with short everything and I wore my beloved tapered skinnies the next few days until my style wounds healed."

Big hugs to you from someone who felt EXACTLY the same way!!! I wonder... Perhaps you're one of the few that need a longer leg line to feel fab? From the photos, they really don't look too bad, but I know what you mean! I still need to read what the others suggest.

The sweaters and vest otherwise, are fab on you good to see you again (though I was absent for a month!)

I haven't read the comments, but I would pass on a sweater that is too clingy and fussy with certain other pieces and look for something that makes you happier. I like the pants on you very much, unrolled, as that creates a fab long leg line with the booties.

Ornella, it's great to see a WIW from you again. I love your new vest! And the last outfit with it is sublime. (I do like that tunic! If it's too staticky, maybe it won't last beyond this season, but for now, I'd say wear it for the looks alone!) The long, straight line of the jeans legs is fabulous on you. I do like them unrolled like this--please wear them with confidence. No frump in sight here. I also like the roll with the booties, and I think it may be just a matter of getting the roll so it feels right to you. Thanks for the link back to Ashley. I like her rolled look with sneakers. Perhaps you could try that in warmer weather, too? Maybe with ballet flats in place of the sneakers, even.

Have you looked at Woolovers, for the sweater? I've been shopping there recently and I really like their woolens. How about this one:
http://www.woolovers.com/briti.....eater.aspx It's unisex so the sleeves are longer. The grey is lighter, though. And it might be too baggy for your taste...

Great to see you post again! I've missed you.

I love the vest, I think it's awesome. I hear you on the jeans, I found my two pairs of straightlegs I bought for Scotland very problematic too. They are great because they aren't much too big, but they don't work tucked into my boots or booties and that's why I can't really wear them. And when I pair them with the sneakers I feel really frumpy. I think I have to take care to get either slimmer styles (skinnies or BFs) or bootcuts in the future. I was also wondering about taking them to have them tapered, maybe I should risk it. I'm not sure about the grey sweater for you, you sound as if you don't love it and I think you shouldn't keep it unless you really need another sweater right now. If that's not the case I would keep looking. Are you searching specifically for grey/black/cream and tunic length? Any preferences for fabric? Maybe I'll stumble across something.

Suz :: oh my, I hope it was nothing serious. I find it interesting that even though you can't see well, you know what I'm talking about - when things don't feel all right, they just don't. Tapering it is.

Diane :: LOL. Our days started the same way then! I got up at 7:33 and my son is supposed to leave the house for school at 7:30. Imagine our morning :-D
And actually, you helped me with regards to sweater. It's good to know the professional does not seek longer hem here ;-)

Una :: you may have just swayed me to keep the tunic too. Yes, the vest is a gem. You can be sure I'm hugging you in my thoughts every time I think how lovely and toasty I feel.

Claire, Claire, Claire! How did you know?? In a moment of dilemma I actually reached for my Flavia scarf to try it with the sweater - they look perfect together btw. Big thumbs up. Actually, she did wear straight black jeans, which of course fit her perfectly. On me, straight just won't do.
I hear your reasons for returning the sweater. I also am well aware of that panicky voice inside me telling me "look at those long sleeves woman! You like the length. You love the neckline. What else do you want?" I would prefer better quality for sure, but if I've learnt one thing this year it is that I can allow myself one item that will be to play with only and from which I don't expect to last forever. Because most of my stuff are basics/classics/essentials, I actually need short-term refreshers that will keep me amused.

I think I must talk to hubby pretty soon for the deciding vote.

I was thinking what Diana said--try making a single "turn back" that is wider. Or, try creating your pant roll at the ironing board, and ironing it in place so it is crisp and deliberate. I think my own new and successful roll bottom jeans are largely due to the nicely creased "factory installed" roll. I am making a mental note of this for my own future reference.

Good to see you again, O!

First off, you can definitely wear rolled jeans! That said, I don't love the roll on this pair. It seems a little bulky to me. Would you consider doing the one big cuff thing? I prefer that with my straight legs. Like this, although you can wear the roll lower too of course:
http://diana.lookfab.com/post/.....rty-casual

I like the grey sweater! Would a long cami help with the clinging?

Sveta :: your vest colour sounds perfect. And polkadots, oh dear! Please show asap. Regarding the sweater, I hear you and I'm keeping PPP in mind too. I must play with a few styling options though, and if they are not 10/10 then back it goes.
You are spot on with how much I want to taper - not as much as skinnies (the difference is visible, about 2cm on each side), but I want some structure at the bottom. Thanks for being super, if it's not inconvenient you can tell me how much yours have been tapered. I'd start from the knee down, and just slightly take them in. I too think unrolled pants look better than rolled - even as they are, and some changes I am sure I'll feel better.

unfrumped :: oh yes, I'd looove asymmetric hem (I guess you mean something like here, photos 3 and 4). That would also be an answer to Angie's advice to have "fewer pieces, but more exceptional and interesting". But based on what I'd seen in the stores, relying to find something exceptional is not wise, so I'm trying not to miss what can work until the real stars come along. Hmh... sounds like I'm answering my own question...

carter :: "blousy" describes it perfectly.

Lisa :: thanks. I too prefer the scrunchy look.

Ornella, you look fab, as usual. Now let me ask you: WWFD (what would Flavia do)? I can't see her going around in anything that made her feel the least bit frumpy. You don't look frumpy of course, but I believe if you feel frumpy, you won't hold your head up high and act as fabulous as you are. Would tapering the hems of the black jeans fix the problem in your mind? If so, go for it! I like them unrolled the best out of the options above.

Your new vest looks like a great winter warmth solution, and it changes your silhouette in a fun way.

Based ONLY on your commentary, I think you should hold out for a better quality sweater (I feel sure Flavia would). Yes, it looks great, and I like that shark bite hem on you, but you can see it's details and construction and if it sticks to you in a weird way it will eventually drive you crazy over the long haul. It might last the winter--but what good is that if you stop reaching for it? I feel particularly justified in being preachy about this because I've been looking for some modern cut sweaters and the only ones in my price range are 100% acrylic, or poly blends, which I don't want to wear. So far I've held fast to my mantra of "natural or breathable fibers only" and that leaves me with two classic, tailored fit wool sweaters for now. Good thing our winter is short! Patience, I tell myself! ;)

YOU ARE NEVER FRUMPY! I can't comment on pant length as I'm pretty careless with the whole "how much roll/cuff is enough" but I love the puffer and that it has a nice sheen. It truly can make a difference in warmth for me. Love the tunic (predictably).

Ok, firstly, it's lovely to see you Ornella Now, down to business... I prefer the jeans unrolled. For you it is a cleaner and more elegant look and suits you better. The puffer vest, I think is fab! As for your sweater, well, I'm a bit on the fence. I'm not 100% sure whether a bit more length is needed, other than that, I like it on you a lot. Sorry I can't be more decisive. My brain is a bit addled after a day that started with the alarm failing to go off

Ornella, I can't see the pictures very well because I had an eye operation this morning. But I agree with what Sveta said -- I ordered a pair of straight leg white jeans hoping to cuff them this way, but on me the look was not right. So I am either going to have the bottoms tapered a bit or simply cut them off for shorts in the summer, since I know I will wear them that way (and they were all of $17).

I love the vest! Great purchase.

I like the jeans unrolled best. And I have also struggled with rolled bottoms, I prefer the scrunchy look instead. I like the grey color and hem on this sweater, but if it clings it's not worth keeping. Fussy clothes can be pesky to wear.

I like the jeans better unrolled as well. I have a hard time rolling straightlegs unless I peg them, and even then, sometimes they're just too blousy. I think they looked good unrolled with the booties though. Maybe in the Spring, a big wide roll won't bother you as much with some low vamp loafers, moccasins or sandals?

I'd like to say that I wouldn't keep a sweater that was fussy with certain clothes, but I'm not very good at following my own advice;-)

Inge :: you're such a sweetheart. Thanks for thorough analysis, I do understand what you mean. Yes, there are so many variables to play with. I too have tried to check what is it that works for Ashley (or Karen's daughter Bridget too, she was sporting shorter lengths in one blog post). The only way I can solve some issues is to be deliberate with what I do, but I'd wear it out only if I can owe the end result. Only that will make things look effortless and feel comfortable. Not sure if I'm making myself clear here :-) I'll try some of your suggestions, if nothing than to thank you for the effort.

Peri :: I like this hem a lot, that is big argument for keeping the sweater. Off to check your thread.

You look vibrant and fab as always! You can so wear those dark colors.
Vest looks great.
I kind of like the gray sweater but wonder, would you be interested in looking for asymmetrical hems? Not the front/back high-low but the side angle type. Sometimes those work well since it blurs the exact length and you can use something that might seem too short if it were a straight line hem.
I've been more focused on that myself--not specifically side angle but realizing there are so many hem options and I've been too quick to settle on the straight hem, which is not always the most friendly for my pear shape.
