K, I could try a belt on the dress instead, that would look nice. But like Aida suggests, I think it should be low contrast, and I don't have a red belt. Aida, that is in fact a great solution.

DV, I see what you mean. How clever of you. I was thinking that I should keep within the color story. Come to think of it, I have a very simple white clutch, too...

Karymk, tusen takk!

I like #3 best. I can see the versatility and this looks like a dinner out dress. Also with the jacket you have the tailoring and the warmth.
I think I'd prefer a more modern shape with the handbag because I think there should be some tension. Especially so since you're going with a metallic shoe that's an excellent modern neutral. I don't think the bag needs to bookend the shoes but I think something about the bag either color or design should be modern -- almost cutting edge.

I think both versions look great, and to my surprise I actually prefer the belted version. If you are concerned about the unlayered version, you could also try adding a thin red belt to the dress; it'll keep your long line underneath the blazer, but also add just a little extra texture.

I think the dress could work each way you styled it. Did you try belting the dress and wearing the blazer over it?

Well, I have learnt something about your dress-code Ingunn, isn't that interesting?
I like it either way, but understand why you would add the belt for added dressiness.
The dress is beautiful in its simplicity on its own, red suits you so well!

The more I look at it, the more I agree that the belt is off. I will be more comfortable to keep the blazer on while sitting, too. I do have a metallic statement piece I could add. I'm also considering a glass pendant, which is daintier. I agree that the dress looks a bit bare on its own.

Looks great! I prefer it without the belt - more free and easy or something. I wouldn't wear pearls, but without the blazer it is a bit simple so maybe a longer pendant or something else if you really plan to take off the blazer?

Loved your other post too (didn't comment there yet).

Yes, it's maybe not all that fun with that blazer. But it is in line with how people dress up around here, so I will blend in :) . It always puzzles me how our dress code seems to be the opposite of the one on the other side of the ocean. Here we dress very casually for work, and more like business casual for leisure and parties. Weird, isn't it?

I like it, and it's proper. But I do wonder if it's fun enough when the jacket is on - the jacket is very businesslike.

I rather like it with the belt. But then it is simpler without too. On the fence much? :)

I think your outfit is lovely. The idea of pearls as a bracelet is nice as I agree that they could read as a little conservative with your outfit.

Thanks, everyone! I've been thinking of adding my pearls, but I'm reluctant because they read as quite conservative. Do you agree? I could always wear them as a bracelet instead.

I like the simplicity of the outfit sans belt. The dress looks equally fab with or without the blazer but I like the idea of a bracelet/watch or necklace to add some more interest. Gorgeous!

Lovely! and happy National Day! I like it with the belt. The dress is nice without the jacket, but do you have a pendant or scarf to soften the solid plain color?

I'd leave the belt off. Great outfit! I like it better with the blazer because it is very minimalistic without the jacket, but that's fine too if you're alright with that.

Tomorrow is our National Day, May 17th. From the morning and into the afternoon I will be wearing my new bunad, shown in my previous post. But later in the day we are invited to an informal dinner party with some friends and family. Many people choose to change from bunad into something a little less formal - or more modern, if you like - in the evening on May 17th.

This is not a day for short hemlines or deep necklines, so a little modesty is in order. Many take inspiration from our national colors in their outfits, which are red, white and blue, but there is a line where this color combo crosses into a not so great look (a flag lookalike?). Of course, there are lots of people who wear anything but red, white and blue, too, but white, navy and red dresses are common.

This is my suggestion: A red fit-and-flare dress, navy blazer, metallic pumps, cream satchel. I'll be wearing a silver metal watch and blue/white enamel and silver earrings. It will be cool in the evening, so I'm wearing a navy trenchcoat as a topper.

My questions:
Should I wear the blazer belted or not?
Does the dress look fine without the blazer, too?
Does the outfit need something more to punch it up?

All suggestions and advice are highly appreciated. Thanks for looking!
