Bright white pants are definitely on my wish list. As with many other things, I am being patient until I reach my final size. In the meantime, I buy only what I absolutely need and/or what is a fantastically low price.

We did have a nice time. They are a fascinating couple to me, being an older Italian couple who were essentially raised in 19th century conditions. They have seen so much change in their lives.

JR, this is why I steer as clear of knits as I can. Drives me nuts, they just don't last as long as other fabrics. I do have several knit summer dresses -- I actually Dry-el these dresses instead of washing in the machine, because I want them to last and not pill and fade and stretch out. The beach wear dresses/cover-ups have to go in the wash and so they are on frequent replacement schedule.

I wanted to add that I have a sleeveless sweater in same exact color. I have probably had it for over a decade, whenever nudes where last in style big time. I haven't worn it in awhile, but it continues to survive each culling episode for some irrational(?) reason. There is something about the color that I do like on me. Maybe it's as simple as finding the "right" beige can be hard, and this sweater I have has enough blue undertones it works on me?

What I'm saying is that I wouldn't give up on this color for you, not at all. I do think it's "your" beige. I think your instincts were dead on, adding the scarf or jacket to it for high/low contrast. And I really think that the whole outfit would be different with bright white bottoms.

JR - sorry I haven't responded back sooner- usually Friday madhouse at work.
I think you are quite correct in your colour analysis - and I am no expert in the matter, but I think you are a "winter" - someone who can wear the rich jewel shades as well as black and white. Maybe others more knowledgeable than me can chime in.
And - almost forgot the most important thing - have a wonderful evening!

CocoLion, no need to apologize. The razor didn't work too well, I'm afraid, maybe because the pilling is very fine. I will have to downgrade this top to stay-at-home status.

Is it true that washing inside out reduces pilling? If so, I really should have done that. I loved the crochet detailing on this top, which is why I bought it, and it honestly isn't that old. Nothing I have is that old right now...

My other take-away here is that beige doesn't work for me as much as I thought it did. I will make a point of always adding rich colours when I do wear it, and to think twice about other options before buying it again. And that a muted mustard doesn't work that well for me either. I'm thinking that it probably wouldn't work too well in a darker version either.

I am with Shiny -- I actually like the soft muted colors on you. I would suggest bright lipstick as the way to add color. The pilling on the top is what I noticed more than the color (sorry). I do like the silhouettes on you.

Hi JR,
I agree with some of the others and agree that the beige tones are not the best for you - if you are just wearing them on their own. However, the addition of the blue/grey topper is nice and maybe a scarf that has both blue and beige tones (or even just blue) would bring the entire outfit together.
Not sure if a blue scarf is an option for you, but maybe something to add in the future?

Also, cognac sandals would bring it together quite nicely.

Pretty earrings, btw!

Hope you have a lovely dinner with friends. Enjoy!

I've posted an assortment of scarves in another thread. And I think I'll take a razor to the pilling...

Yes, I know, I'm a tad stubborn. I always think there's a way to make something work, and I'm trying to find it here. Even if it doesn't matter for tonight, it will be in my toolbox for another time.

I agree with the others that a bright or deep color by your face would really flatter. I don't know anyone who really wears this shade of beige well... Could you maybe fling a scarf around your neck casually so it doesn't seem too formal/dressy?

Wow, I LOVE those earrings!

Tex, good idea about the makeup. I don't usually wear it at home, and tend to slack off on it in the summer even when going out, but it's a nice, easy fix, isn't it?

A still brighter scarf would help jazz it up. If you wear makeup, maybe a brighte shade on the lips would also amp up the color. The ear rings are very nice! The pants are pretty neutral so I'd just focus on more color on top.

Fit: I think the slacks fit you just fine! I don't wear khakis often, but I have a similar pair of looser/slouchier and I prefer them sometimes not just for comfort but for the look.

Color: I haven't seen enough of your outfits to say you could do better. Personally, I like the soft muted colors on you very much. That said, my first reaction was that this outfit would pop more if the pants were white, rather than khaki.

Honest commentary: Since you asked, my only nit-pick is that the top has seen better days. The close up shows it is pilling. It's cute and I do love the neckline, the fit, and the color on you... I just think maybe it's time to retire it.

Finally, just because your friends are more laid back, does not mean you have to dress down. I just had this conversation last night with my friends, who are always super casual (often showing up in gear, because they've biked there), and I never am. We're all comfortable enough with each other to allow ourselves to enjoy whatever we feel like wearing. We don't have to match the same style note. My friends last night were in jeans and gear, and I was in an LBD an heels. We all felt confident and comfortable.

This will be a supper in their home and they are very informal, unpretentious people, so dressing up would not be a good idea. (Please excuse the wet hair in the first photos.)

It's a cool day, so I am going to need another layer to come home in. It doesn't matter much, we'll just be in the car, but as a style exercise, I tried to look for something that worked. I have a couple of gorgeous shawl scarves, but they came across as too dressy and didn't play well with the scarf around my neck. I would love to have a brown jacket to go over this, or a denim jacket, but I don't. On a whim I tried the slouchy grey sweater and was pleasantly surprised. I do not like combining grey and beige, but it was the scarf that saved it for me. Although it doesn't show well in the photos, there are some silver threads in it, and so it managed to pull the whole outfit together, in terms of colour at least. I am open to dissenting opinions.

The pants are too big, I know, but my waist is causing me problems again. I have a pair of khakis a size down, which fit me wonderfully everywhere but at the waist. They make a noticeable muffin top, so I can only wear them with a loose, non-clingy top. *sigh* So we'll pretend the slouch is intentional.

These are the same earrings as a couple of days ago. Strange, because I don't wear them that often, but I like the richness of the pattern on them with the crochet details on the top. They are refugees from my grandmother's jewelry box and I have no idea how old they are or if there's a story behind them, or even if they're real gold or not. I have had them for decades though, and they were probably old when I got them.

Finally, I'm planning on wearing the black blingy sandals, but I could switch to cognac ones. Or closed shoes, either black or brown, if it really cools off by evening. Thoughts?
