Thanks to Sara, shedev, and Angie! I love wearing dresses and have fewer fit problems with them than jeans or trousers. I wish they were more practical for my life!

You all are kind, and it's good to know that others struggle with fit, especially on curvy bodies. I sit right between standard and plus sizing, so it's not always possible for me to size up or down, which makes shopping frustrating.

Plus, I have PCOS, a hormonal imbalance that wreaks havoc with my weight (Diet and exercise do help, but the PCOS turns small mistakes into big consequences, which shifts my sizing from month to month and sometimes, from week to week.) I'm working to make peace with the body I have, and your comments have me suspect I'm further along than I often feel.

My husband's a programmer, and he says that when you finish the first 90% of a project, there's still the last 90% to go. Perhaps I'm in that final 90% and that's why it feels so far?

I think you have an idea of where you are going and your style is pretty cohesive already.
I understand what you say about tugging and pulling at your clothes. This would generally happen with my hips. Tops that I would like would ride up if in the smaller size or not sit properly on the shoulders if I sized up.
For me it was more the idea of what I though would be effortless and I was not paying attention to what was really easy to dress and flattering at the same time. When I started shopping with less expectations and just tried things to see what would be flattering on me a world of possibilities opened up.
Although I am still a rebel at heart and like to stray I can pick up items that are flatering on me and sometimes I see too many of them .

Your descriptors already match your style Jenn

I see your problem. I don't have a solution but this is what I've seen from personal experience.

When you are well endowed with curves, nothing will really stay 'put' and require no fussing. I know just how you feel because I have started to wear more open necklines for my large bust, and I have to keep checking for my bra strap and cleavage as well. I've tried all fabrics and cuts - it doesn't help. Though I have to say that woven cotton tops and dresses do stay put better than knits. On the other hand, woven cotton is stiff and stands away from the body often and doesn't skim the curves, so it doesn't look as good as fluid drapey clothes. But fluid drapey clothes have more movement of their own, so you'll have to make peace with fixing and tugging. I sometimes size up in knits. Since they have stretch, they offer some shaping and drape well but fabric doesn't ride up. However, the neckline is the key, as a more open neckline can fall off the shoulder. You can keep trying with sizes. Also, if you live in weather where wearing a cami is easy, gauzy chiffons and crepe tops are perfect. They drape and flow but do not cling.

But this is just my experience. If you do find a fabric/cut that doesn't need a lot of pulling and tugging, please please please let me know too!

Good point, Shevia. I have a faded olive blazer I probably would have brought out, except we ended up skipping the movie and just shopping at the open-air mall. Looking forward to a reprieve from the heat tomorrow.

This is a great representation of your style and a terrific place to be. I see feminine/flirty (showcasing your curves) and fun (as in willingness to try interesting shoes and accessories). I, however, do not consider any movie outfit complete without a jacket for the a/c!

Well done! I really like the dark red colour on you!

I think you'll feel more effortless once the fit issues are resolved. Tugging and pulling at stuff is no fun. For me, what happens is I look fine going out the door, but then I glance at myself in a shop window and see that everything has gone awry! My bra straps are showing, my cami is bunched up on one side, or my pants are bunching at the back...I hate that. Being ruthless about fit should make you feel fab. But, it's always easier said that done.

Thanks, Diane and Karin!

And especially, thank you for the descriptors, Maneera. That's exactly the kind of thing I was hoping for. Doing Angie's descriptor exercise, the words I've come up with for where I want to be are:
effortless, quality, timeless, layered, practical, feminine, chic, modern

That's more than five. Obviously, I'm still narrowing it down.

Thinking about it over the past week, my biggest issues with my current style are fit and quality. I hate feeling like I'm always having to tug at my clothes to make sure my bra is covered and fabric isn't clinging in the wrong places or riding up. Or like trousers are the wrong length. Or tops don't hang properly. I don't hate where I'm at, but I want to up my game.

Jenn, I love your style. It definitely looks effortless to me ... And I have to say that you're really beautiful! I love how you take full advantage of your curves - the belted chambray dress looks beyond fabulous on you. Rock on, girl!!!

If I had to put your style into words, I would say it's fun, playful, bold, and modern with a bit of edge. You look awesome in your last outfit, and I don't think those lace-up sandals are easy to pull off. Yet...you pull it off absolutely effortlessly.

My challenge for myself in July is to figure out where I'm at style-wise, and where I'm going. I've been working on my Pinterest board of looks I love and I know I'm nowhere near the effortless style of those looks. I feel like a bundle of rough edges and almosts, especially in the summertime, when I find it so much harder to dress stylishly.

Anyway, here are my first five outfits of July. The first two, you've already seen, but I included them just for completeness (and to see everything together)

#1 - Eddie Bauer burgundy cargo capris, Loft striped linen tee, Chuck Taylors.

#2 - Trouser jeans and abstract leopard shell with ballet flats.

#3 - Gear for a day hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park. Athleta top, C9 by Champion running capris, Nike trail runners. I added the puffer vest for warmth at high altitude, where the extra layer was definitely necessary.

#4 - Fourth of July bbq and fireworks in the park. Belted eShakti chambray dress and Softspots t-strap wedges.

#5 - Movie and shopping with my husband and son, with temps in the high 80s. Eddie Bauer crossover dress (with matching tank underneath for modesty), Nativeearth lace-up sandals.
