I love everything about this! The braids, the slouchy shorts with the floral thank, the shoes and the cardigan to ground this look... I think it's one of my favourite outfits of yours.

And I know the feeling of thinking clothes should fit differently than they do. I often need petite sizing on top, especially in jackets, but that's not commonly available in stores. And I regularly grab too big tops and have to go back for a size down. Although I'm learning and now I'm usually taking two sizes into the dressing room from the start.

This must be my favourite post and outfit so far. I always read your texts without looking at the photos, slowly scrolling down not to spoil the surprise. I paint the picture in my head, imagine the textures and feel the delight with all the little, meaningful details you describe.

It's just beautiful. From the tank, to brown cardigan, navy shorts, the owl, the hair. And the charming pearl earrings too.

I found your observation about being sized out very interesting. Petites and tall ladies have this issue in common - getting the right proportion alone is sometimes impossible, and when you throw into mix all the fine differences and variations of the body parts, plus style preferences, it makes finding the right garment in the right fit quite a quest.

Btw you mentioned Liberty of London fabrics. Do you sew? The top you have on looks like an easy one to make (Colette patterns has a free sleeveless blouse pattern). If you're a confident seamstress you can totally make a bunch of those Liberty tops (or dresses!)

Alasse, perhaps crown braids are somehow easier on thinner hair?! Because it doesn't have so much weight they get pulled down? Thnx for the feedback.

Thank you Alicat! You're right about folklore…maybe that should be one of my style words instead. More musing is required. :)

Shevia, yes, clothing sizing just seems all over the place!

That is just the kind of floral I like, too! And I adore your braids. I haven't figured out crown braids yet. I like how the top contrasted with the brown cardigan, and how it looks against the navy shorts. You found a winner! I would also be curious if smaller/petite sizes fit you well; you should try!

Thnx Sarah!

You made me laugh Jackie. I am fine hair that's fairly thin, so when I first braid it, the braid is skinny. Then I just tug on either side and it gets broader, like magic. ;)

Thank you Gigi: quaint is one of my style words (I think, hehe), so I'm glad this achieves that! And that is excellent advice to go window shop: I haven't been to regular stores in ages so I assumed petites were only carried online. I'll have to brave the mall in search of info. I always assumed with my long torso that petite tops would hit too high (above my waist) and be too short, but I'll give it a go.

I love your outfit, E! It seems quaint somehow. And I feel like there's a touch of Victorian about it...maybe it's the hair coupled with the shirt?

I know the pain of being sized out, and it is an emotional pain as well as a pain in the you-know-what. My advice would be just to stop in at stores that carry very small sizes—BR, Loft, Ann Taylor, Nordstrom—and try on their smallest sizes to see how they fit. You don't have to buy anything; just try on the clothes. I would also recommend these stores because they all carry petite sizing too, so you can try that at the same time and see if it fits you better. I am wondering whether petite tops would be better for you because you said that the armholes are quite low on the regular tops.

Before I found petites, I didn't realize how clothes were supposed to fit me. As soon as I tried on petite sizes, it was like, bam! Everything clicked, and instead of looking dumpy, I looked smart and polished. Give it a try! :^)

Oh I hadn't thought of English schoolboys, but looking at the pics again you're right! It's the slouchy shorts & hands-in-pockets thing, plus the navy. I do love a hint of academia in my clothes, which is probably why I love navy so much. :)

I too was sad when I saw the shoes were darker than in the pics. But they're so comfy I have to forgive them! I know I want a brown (hoping it'll be light enough to bookend my hair better) & red pair, but I can't decide which one first or which style to get. Apparently they're introducing an ankle boot soon. :o

All I did was French braid my hair in reverse, so I started at the back and worked my way forward (two even braids with a middle part). I'm cheating, the crown's only at the front. ;) I braided under instead of over and only added hair to the outside strand to make the braids more visible, then bobby pinned the ends behind my ears under the other braid (if that makes sense?). I don't think it would've worked if my hair wasn't wet, as it is terribly slippery/argumentative if I try to braid it dry. But I definitely don't have the too thick hair challenge. Are you French braiding or just doing regular braids and then pinning them up? Maybe a French braid would keep your hair up? My niece has super thick long hair, and I used to get hers to stay up via French braiding with minimal bobby pins (she hates anything poking into her scalp & I can't blame her). Nowadays she won't let me do fun hairstyles on her though, so I don't know if that only works with younger kids.

WHAT my hair is much longer than yours and I can't do a coronet yet!!! No fair! Actually, I can, if I do 4 braids instead of two, but my hair is so strange it actually pushes bobby pins back out after about three minutes. My braids are too fat and thick and won't stay on top of my head.

Anyway, this is totally English school boy (despite the florals), I lurve it. Glad to see the T straps in action. They are so cute. Bummed to hear they are not as blue as the pics show. Maybe I'll go red sandals instead, since it is summer ...

Thnx Firecracker! I know I'm smaller than average, but I guess I don't see myself as *that* small. Certainly not 00 or XXS small, although I suppose that's just reflective of changing sizes!

I loved hearing about your grandmother Joy. Thanks so much for sharing that, especially how it reflected all of the colours of her lifetime.

Aida, it is more difficult to talk about being too small, isn't it? I almost deleted that paragraph at least twice before publishing the post! I'm glad I'm not the only one though. Thrifting makes sizing down more of a challenge (although I'm getting better at being picky and just putting something back if it's too big), but even at regular stores I'm often sized out of their smallest option, so I don't have a good feel for how clothes are supposed to fit, I don't think. Hmmm. I like windswept hair more too, as a team RATE member, but sometimes I think it doesn't translate as well to photos. hehe I'm glad you like my outfit!

Thank you Dustt. Too bad you get sized out too; it's just too frustrating. I suppose we all struggle with sizing/fits! It's enough to make me long for the days when everything was custom-made, except I don't want to have to wear dresses and corsets and petticoats all the time. hehe

Aubergine, it is hard to visualise! As I said to Aida, I'm not always sure how fitted clothes are supposed to feel either, much less look. Lately I've been focusing on the armpit region, as I've noticed many of my tops, even if they fit my (broader) shoulders, have armpits that hit much lower on my torso. So now I look at that instead of shoulder seams. Hopefully it's a baby step in the right direction! Thnx for the hair compliment; I have quite thin hair so I'm always thrilled when I manage to disguise that. ;)

You're so nice JulieJohn. I do mainly dress for myself, because of my lifestyle, but I'm so glad I started actively participating on YLF so now I'm dressing for some others too!

A cute and not-too-sweet outfit is this. The whimsical woodsy touches (Woodsy the owl?) are subtle and that's nice. Sometimes these things are just for the wearer, and we few who are lucky enough to enjoy them vicariously.

And I sadly have Dustt's problem more often than yours (without even the part where I get to be 5'9"!), but either way it's weird sometimes how hard it is to visualize what size you should actually be wearing in something, isn't it?

Lovely - casual - approachable and the baggy short look is wonderful with the braids - they play off one another beautifully!! Unfortunately as a 5'9" "sturdy girl" I have no point of reference for the "objects are smaller than they appear" body sense. I sometimes have the opposite problem - when a Large isn't really a large

Eva, I actually have a similar body image thing going but mine is due to verrryyy slow weight loss (which was planned) so the changes kind of snuck up on me; I didn't really notice, oversized came on trend, I noticed even less, then all of a sudden one day late last spring I realized that most of my wardrobe is, truly, just too large. Same issue when shopping, I always default to a size up and have to remind myself to also try the size down when it exists. I don't really talk about it (what a problem to have, people say) and I'm still working on coming to terms with it, which has been tough with the fits that are around right now. Just wanted to let you know you're not alone with this kind-of-backwards body view ><

Anyway, the outfit looks super! I have a soft spot for tea-china florals Even better that it's silk. The baggy rolled shorts are a great pairing to unsweeten the floral, too. And your hair! Totally adorable. I like it even better a little windswept than if it were all perfectly coifed.

You are wearing your hair exactly like my grandmother wore hers! Her hair had never been cut and reached the floor when brushed out. It was all the colors it had been in her lifetime.
Your silk floral looks perfect for your style. What a find!

Great outfit, E! You look fresh and Springy and a little retro, and the sophisticated soft palette suits you very well. The braids go perfectly with the outfit. I've had similar musings about sizing, too. People often tell me I'm small or "tiny," even, whereas I have always thought of myself as average-sized. I do see myself as being on the small side of average these days. :)

In theory, floral prints should work perfectly with my style preferences, but in practice, I have a challenging time finding just the right type (other than all of those Liberty of London fabrics I see online and drool over). So I felt very fortunate to come across this tank while thrifting last year, especially as it includes both navy and taupe (two of my favourite neutrals)! It's silk, but the weave is quite matte and sturdy, almost like a twill, and I really love how it makes it feel almost sturdy. I began with that, but wanted to play up the woodsy colours to the print rather than traditional spring florals, so I combined it with these linen navy shorts (rolled, so I can adjust the hemline if you think it'd look better at a different length) and my new-to-me lightweight dusty brown cardigan. I've been looking for summer weight, crewneck, full-sleeve cardigans, so was happy to come across this one while thrifting last week.

It's an extra small petite, and I thought that would make it too small for me, but between the raglan shoulders and stretchy nature of knits, it actually fits quite well. Which has me thinking that part of the source of my fitting woes might be a kind of strange body dysmorphia: could I imagine myself a couple sizes bigger than I am, because of wishful thinking (I'd love to gain some weight), and therefore buy most of my clothes a size larger than necessary? Have I gotten so used to slightly oversized clothes I don't even realise there's anything wrong with them? I don't know. On the same thrifting trip, I tried on a 00P Banana Republic silk blouse that fit me beautifully (I didn't buy it because the neckline was all wrong), which made me wonder just how often I'm sized out of clothing lines (and pity the women smaller than me, as I'm small but not exactly miniature sized). Meurgh. At least fluid fits are increasing in popularity!

Anyway, back to the outfit! I couldn't resist wearing my floral gold rings to match the shirt, and my owl brooch seemed like another fun way to add a woodsy touch. Much to my delight, my hair's long enough to braid now; I did it while it was still wet and it kept quite surprisingly well all day, even without any product. I took these pictures right before bed, and after a windy walk, so it doesn't look perfect, but I'm just happy to stayed in place. For my walk I wore my comfy navy flats; as shoes were the only difference between the at-home outfit and out-of-the-house version I just took one set of pics.

Comments, suggestions, criticisms, etc. welcome as usual.
