If someone wore out a quilt I made them, I’d be thrilled. In fact when I give one, I say, use it. If it wears out, I’ll make you a new one. And believe me, I’ve seen tons of quilts too worn out to be saved. Often if one part is going, such as batting, stitching or a certain fabric area, even repairing that cannot save the rest as it’s probably all on its last legs. Sometimes a memory photo is the best way to “save” a quilt.</p> <p>I’ve used parts of old quilts to make throw pillows and Christmas stockings, but they would also work for other craft projects especially if you enjoy the shabby-chic style. Table toppers, chair pads, </p> <p>However, asking the maker for advice is good. She won’t be sad you’ve loved her gift to death. And if she is still making quilts, no harm in asking her to make you a new one! It might take awhile if she has a few projects going on already, but it can be inspiring to start a new one when it has a definite purpose or recipient. There is no greater 'gift' to a quilter than to have her quilts 'used up'. Binding can easily be replaced and appliqué can be tacked down if it has lifted, however fabric worn through would be a curators job to repair and usually more of a chore than to make another quilt. </p> <p>I give my quilts away unconditionally. Some folks have hung them on walls and others have used them daily in some form. I'm not overly sentimental as a person, so I had no problem recently when I had to send 3 older quilts to rag recycling. I do have a ratty old thing (my first quilt) that I keep in the car and that we use as a beach blanket, but it is getting almost too ratty even for that. </p> <p>It would be worthwhile asking your SIL her opinion. After several days of painting group, painting class, running group, rec center treadmill running, and being winter-weathered in (none of which requires more than gear or grubs), I was looking forward to this evening’s quilt guild meeting. I dressed appropriately and spent an hour finishing sewing binding on a quilt to take for show and tell. The quilt is going to be a wedding gift in mid-February, so this meeting is the last chance to share with the guild. </p> <p>While I was sewing, the rest of the board was having an email conversation and ended up canceling tonight’s meeting due to icy roads. While I thoroughly agree safety comes first, especially since many of our members come from up to an hour away, ... pooh. I really wish we were having the meeting. </p>
