Great pics. I’ve never done the Christmas Count. I used to do Project FeederWatch, but got paranoid about West Nile, lol. I finally set up the eBird app on my phone this week...

Sterling, thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed it. The thing about birding is, you’re just outdoors, experiencing nature. So some are completely focused on birds, like my husband, while I’m looking at everything, mainly because I’m not as avid a birder as him! Like when we were in Barrow, and everyone was looking at a sparrow, I noticed a sled with dogs. Now that’s something you don’t see every day!

Jane, thank you. It didn’t feel peaceful, it felt exciting! There were seven of us looking for owls, pointing them out to each other. We saw an exciting thing when an owl had a vole and was being pursued by a hawk (Northern harrier), dropped it and the hawk caught it in mid air and took off, all high above us.

Sarah, thank you. Bluebird is probably best because I was a bluebird as a child. It was to the now defunct Camp Fire Girls, as Brownies are to Girl Scouts. Our uniforms had vests with red fronts, though, so not mountain bluebirds. :(

Suz, thank you. I’ve seen what you’ve described. In fact, that’s a good way to find birds of prey. Actually a phone is great because you usually have it with you, and can easily edit or send to someone. My pictures were with my phone, too. The owls were taken through a spotting scope. It’s hard to get the phone just the right distance away, i need an adaptor. Here’s what they looked like before I cropped them.

You look fabulous in your birding gear. I love how it matches some of your favourite sightings! Terrific layering, too. Those Patagonia jackets are great -- my brother has one.

This is a terrible photo because all I had was my iphone...but walking down my street the other day I heard a racket of crows. There were a dozen or more in a tree going nuts. The reason? An eagle had landed. They surrounded the eagle and eventually chased him away!

I think your gear makes you a mountain bluebird. Gorgeous! We have Steller's jays in our yard year round. Absolutely love those obnoxious guys, bopping through the branches of the rhododendron like they own the place.

cjh, thank you. I joke that we live in the wild west, but it’s kind of true. The first pictures were taken in a county park in a neighborhood with gorgeous views of the snowy mountains. I’d love to live there! Yesterday we were on federal property, probably BLM. Eighty-five percent of the state is federally owned.

Yesterday was another gorgeous but cold day. The pictures were taken before the sun dropped down behind the mountain. When that happened, wow, the temperature really dropped, and I wished I had been wearing a down comforter.

Late yesterday afternoon (wearing the same outfit), we went out to look for short eared owls. There were three of them, and we watched them hunt all around us. My pictures aren’t great, but I thought they were interesting. There was also a small herd of wild horses. They weren’t afraid of us. It was kind of unnerving, actually!

Suntiger, thank you. A few years ago there was an irruption of snowy owls south from the Arctic. I lived in the northern most state that didn’t have a snowy owl. I think that’s why we ended up going to the Arctic. It was an incredible experience, snowy owl or no. One of the guides said it was a good year for snowy owls, because it was a good year for lemmings. And we saw one of them, too!

Carla, the Stellar’s jay is in the mountains in summer, and in our area in winter. It’s a gorgeous bird. And bluebirds are just darling. Seeing a bluebird is a good day.

Such beautiful birds, and loved the snowy owl too! I will enjoy them vicariously through you...while I procrastinate dealing with my own snow! You are a stronger person than me to be out in the cold by choice. Cee- lets do a house swap for 2 months :)

Wow, I didn’t epect anyone to think I looked good in my gear. Rather, I wanted to show how I have to layer up to stay warm.

Sterling, thank you. Normally I wear Salomons or Timberlands when we go birding, but these boots are wonderfully warm. I love having warm feet when we’re standing around in the snow.

Classically Casual, thank you. I took my neck gaiter to Barrow this past summer and it was so versatile. However, my husband had a down hoody which I coveted, hence the Christmas present.

Rachy, thank you.

SarahD8, thank you. I imagine one of the jays in our area, the scrub jay or the Stellar’s jay, or one of my favorites, the mountain bluebird. (These aren’t my pictures.)

Carla, thank you. Yes, my husband does drive like that! I think our husbands would get along well. I don’t do Christmas counts (brrrrr..) but my husband does. He did three this winter. I did part of one a few years ago, and started to freeze, and asked him to take me home.

Cee, believe it or not, our summer temps are hellish, too. So soon we’ll be envying your weather.

Kelly, thank you. I do try to buy my gear in colors I like, but my main goal is comfort.

Opaline, thank you. I don’t have any pics of the barn owls the other day, but I did get one of a snowy owl when we were in Barrow:

Shevia, thank you. Fishing is mostly doing nothing, isn’t it? :)

Karen, thank you. Patagonia is definitely good quality. I have far more of it than I would otherwise, if we didn’t have an outlet store in town.

Joy, thank you. Be careful of your dog. A friend ordered one of these for her small terrier. She’s had coyotes and a bobcat in her yard:
https://www.coyotevest.com

Bijou, thank you. I get cold when I’m standing around. If we were just hiking, I wouldn’t need to layer up like this.

Adriana, thank you. Our summer weather is like Cee’s, unfortunately.

Jane, thank you. I love having everything in my limited color scheme.

Toronto, girl, thank you. It was actually a beautiful day. No bad weather, just bad clothes.

You look fabulous! I need to check out Patagonia. We do some casual birding while dig walking around a lake. Right now some raptors have followed the geese and we see a bald eagle dining on goose. Some ducks have joined the geese, mostly golden eyes lately the coyotes have been out hunting in the daytime so it has gotten risky to walk a dog.
Stay warm

Excellent gear - functional and stylish! I scored a "40% everything" coupon from Patagucci last year and splurged big. Their quality, lifetime guarantee and commitment to the environment make them the opposite of fast fashion, but you have to really focus on CPW when you are laying down the credit card, even at the outlet store.

You look so spiffed out. Great puffer & boots. It’s nice to see your face these days! I wish you had some Owl pics.

At this time ( Australia's possibly Hell on Earth temperature-wise ), I'd gladly dive into those surrounds like a naked hippy from '69 !

Pic #1 - you make gear look GOOD, JAileen!

Does DH duck and weave while driving when he spies a bird? My DH isn't a birder per se, but did forestry in Uni with a specialization in Wildlife. He did a lot of ornithology, with fieldwork in spruce grouse, woodcock, and ducks to the MA level, and worked in the field of natural resources and wildlife biology his entire career. If he sees something interesting in the sky, he starts to duck and weave - trying to spot the bird through the windshield and I alway say: "keep your eyes on the road! I'll look!" He is the reason our home backs on a conservation area!

Do you do the Christmas Bird Count?
