Looking good! I really like the skirt outfit. Fun to see you wearing a skirt and I am always interested in how you wear the poncho. Love the boots with it too.
I have been brain washed by Trinny on the black thing as well “Black goes with black and that’s that”. I have moved away from in a bit now. I don’t mind black with a colour if there is some white (or another light neutral) involved. But I still avoid black with another solid colour (unless it’s a neutral).

Love the proportions of #2, what a beautiful skirt.
I also love the EF cardi on you.
I follow Trinny and she still stands by her rule, that colours look better with other colours than black. I prefer black with white.

Hah I hear you on the kitty fur issue, especially since you like to wear a lot of darker colors! Mine is mostly white with a black and brown mask-and-mantle so it doesn't matter what I wear, there's always fur to be seen. My advice is to get really friendly with those little sticky anti-fur rollers or, you know, swap all your dark neutrals to light

Lovely tonal layering- you look terrific in both looks.

I also prefer black in a column of colour, or with other neutrals. I do wear it with a bright pink jacket and a red silk blouse, but I then prefer to add in another neutral too. I also struggle with black and pastels or icy colours - I see others make it work though.

Two great outfits -- I can't pick a favorite! I think what I like best is that they are variations on a theme but are subtle and layered enough that they look cohesive rather than repetitive/boring. That's very inspiring.

Thanks for mentioning the Closetspace app. I was playing around with Stylebook for a while but it didn't quite have the functionality that I wanted.

Aida - I do always feel kind of arty in my apron, which is fun. The outfit worked without it, too, which is good, because I handed the apron over to my son whenever I needed to take a break and, of course, took it off for dinner out later in the evening. On the skirt, I did still feel good with it by the end of the day, but we've acquired a white cat since the last time I wore it, so that's an issue.

Thanks, Angie! I'm coming back around to skirts after some time off.

kerlyn, now that I'm past Black Friday weekend, I'm over the hump. Hopefully, things will stay pleasantly, but not stressfully busy for the next few weeks.

lisap, yup, the indie craft scene is booming here too. One side effect is that the popularity is starting to spread out of the bigger cities and into the smaller ones closer to where I live (about an hour outside Denver). I'm enjoying not having viable market options without as stressful a commute (though last weekend's show was down in Denver.)

shevia - That sturdy charcoal apron was a find!

Joy, yup, functionality is important, especially when setting up and tearing down the booth!

fashiontern, the skirt is a plain cotton, which would feel a little casual for the holiday party, but it would work for less blingy events. I have a mental block about wearing black with bright colors. In the old British What Not to Wear, one of the hosts used to say, "Don't wear black with colors--it makes the black look boring and the colors look cheap." I'm pretty sure that's outdated advice, but it sort of articulates the feeling I get when I try it. I always feel a little garish. I've actually been thinking about that a lot recently, realizing that I don't really like black bottoms at all, except for creating a column of color. I need to to remind myself to stop defaulting that way and look for more interesting, textured, nuanced neutrals for my bottom half. And you're right, I don't wear a lot of brights, except for gear...I like to be able to be seen while hiking.

Gigi, layering is a must in my climate. On the day of that show, the temps were in the 30s when I arrived in the morning and in the mid-70s by afternoon. My sweaters and scarves and jackets are on and off all day long.

rachylou, Team Maker-Baker!

Style Fan, thank you, it went well!

Sterling, I post the wear counts because it inspires ME! I get as much satisfaction from those numbers going up as I do from adding a new piece. I'm glad it inspires you, too.

Katerina, I had a sleeveless top on, so the poncho got rearranged to suit its original purpose when I took the jacket off. Versatile little piece! I use the Closetspace app to keep track of wears.

You are very gifted at layering...I wish I were so good at it! You did an excellent job of making all the pieces work together in both outfits. I like the fact that the outfits are low contrast and dark but not drab at all...you've incorporated a lot of details. I have quite a bit of dark clothing and am hesitant to wear dark with dark, lest it wash me out, but maybe if I get the right colors I could do it, based on your example here. Thanks for stimulating my fashion sense!

Those are great colors for this time of year. Love the Born boots. You do the tunics /pants thing well.

I’m glad you decided to give the skirt another try. It looks very versatile. I bet you could wear it to your husband’s work party (if you didn’t already have a great outfit) or as a contrast to bright colors (do you do bright colors?). I hope the sentiment attached to it can bring you happy memories of your mom, and of your family saying goodbye.

Your sweater, btw, brings memories for me—you were trying it on in one of the first YLF forum posts I read. :).

Two recent WIWs with a similar color theme.

#1 is what I wore to run my booth at a bustling craft market. Note the apron under my cardigan. I kinda like it, but it was really a matter of convenience...marks me as a vendor and allows me to keep my cash on my person.
