Catherine, I hope you moved because you wanted to. And even though it was so chilly, and it gets ferocious in the winter, I still thought it was a very charming place.

Brooklyn, in St Paul, my son was wearing a very light army type jacket, whereas I was wearing light puffy jackets. I think the dampness was hard for me. I live in the desert with no humidity at all. He’s been there a couple years and apparently has acclimated. But they had already had snow!

Chris, yes, being outside for an extended time is very different from dashing from the car to the building. And I’ve said this before: birding is like hiking without the walking part. Standing around in the cold is especially hard.

Sounds like a lovely trip and you were PERFECTLY dressed for it. Very smart of you to bring all those layers. I always have to remind myself that being outdoors all day in "cool" or "cold" requires more layers than when you're doing it just for a few hours. Love Runcarla's comments about her mom's description of Duluth having winter and July 4th...the same kinds of things are sometimes said about Maine although they throw in mud & black fly season for a few weeks in spring. And so much fun that you saved a photo of your first clients in your new photography business!

Angie, thank you. Lake Superior really was ginormous.

LaP, thank you. We found a baby great horned owl several years ago and took it to a wildlife center to be raised. We saw her just before she was released, and she was magnificent.

Nice capsule dressing! Those booties look perfect.

And wow, that shrike is beautiful. DS and I lucked out and got to watch the local raptor rehab center release a Great Horned Owl recently at one of our nearby hiking spots. I'm hoping he sticks around so we can see him again.

I'd love to do a Boundary Waters canoe trip at some point in the next couple years... this is very inspirational.

Jane, thank you. The lake is huuuge! In summer, I think Duluth is kind of a resort spot. But in fall, it was deserted. I also noticed how much later the sun came up in the morning. At least a half hour later than at home.

Rachy, thank you. I didn’t even take any down for this trip. After all, it’s only fall. They get seriously cold in winter. But we were outside a lot, probably more than the average person. At the bird observatory it was windy and then rainy. Most people wouldn’t stay out in that, but seeing the shrike released was priceless. The proposal - amazing!

Style Fan, thank you. Mostly I was warm enough. Next time we would go a couple weeks earlier, to enjoy better fall color, and for the migration. Fewer crowds are a definitely a plus, though.

Cee, thank you. I presume you meant cold, right? :)

Carla, thank you. They said the lake stays the same temperature year round - 50F I think. That’s like SF Bay and the ocean. We could never swim in the ocean because it was too cold. The jays you mention did exactly what the hawks do. They would have hundreds pass in an hour. The weather wasn’t right when we were there - the wind was blowing from the south one day, and raining the other day. I’d love to go birding with you.

Shevia, thank you. I really should have posted the picture of the tractor parked outside the cafe where we ate lunch. The guy got his lunch to go and then drove off in it.

Kelly, thank you. I was pretty prepared, clothes-wise. We had visited St Paul in the fall before. It was cold then, too. I was really surprised by the proposal!

ETA: I think the lake has to be colder in winter. 50F doesn’t sound cold enough.

You've got cold weather adventure dressing down to a surprisingly fashionable science, JAileen! What a lot of fun you had as well. The dumpster shot is hilarious.

FWIW, I lived in Duluth, Minesota for 5 years and have a memory of wading in Lake Superior in a bathing suit with a sweater on top! My Mom hated the cold and said that there were 2 seasons in Duluth - winter and the 4th of July.

If you ever go to Presqu'ile for birding you must let me know! It is only an hour away. We are at a fat part of the lake, but sometimes get birds massing hereabouts. There was some drama with blue jays earlier this month. DH counted over a hundred passing through our backyard (we back on a ravine.)

Torontogirl, thank you. I have four striped turtleneck tops, and they were nice because I didn’t need a scarf. I asked the couple if I could take their picture because their outfits were so spectacular, and the woman immediately went into that theatrical pose. I think they loved being noticed!

Joy, thank you. Yes, the boots are the waterproof Naturalizers. They’re pretty comfortable, and I thought they looked good with jeans, too.

Suntiger, thank you. Yes, the Naturalizers were way less expensive than the Aquatalias, even on sale. I felt less guilty with these. The bird is actually a predator, and bit the guy several times, drawing blood!

Jessikams, we hope to go to the Boundary Waters sometime. At the bird observatory we talked to a retired zoology professor who described how spectacular the area is. Fingers crossed we get there!

Bridgie, thank you. I definitely enjoyed myself. And I didn’t even mention the pinball bar our millenial son took us to, or the Kurdish restaurant that was so good we ate there twice!

Firecracker, thank you. Well, the off season does have its charms. For one thing, the raptors only migrate in spring and fall, and for another thing, nothing was crowded. Seattleites might do better with the dampness than I did.

We just returned from a week in Minnesota. It was very chilly, damp, windy, and rainy. The sun did come out a few times, though. :)

I was more or less prepared. I think I wore every warm thing I packed, including long underwear, fleece, nanopuffs, and goretex. I took my waterproof Salomon hiking shoes and waterproof Naturalizer booties. (I returned the Aquatalias I bought in NAS when I bought these. I felt better about the money I spent.) Everything I brought was grey or blue. It was nice how everything worked together. I used packing cubes for small things. I liked that those things didn’t get lost in my bag.

Our trip was very casual. We visited our son and his girlfriend in St Paul, and also made a short visit to Duluth, birding along the way. In Duluth they said Lake Superior is the the biggest *and* the best. From our hotel room it looked like the ocean. We also saw what looked like tide pools, up the north shore.

We were staying right next to the channel connecting Lake Superior to the harbor. We watched the bridge go up to allow a nearly 1000 foot ship go through the channel. Duluth also has a bird observatory. It is a spot where raptors concentrate during their migration. We were a little late for the migration, but did see a few interesting birds, including a northern shrike which they banded and released. I also started my new career as an engagement/wedding photographer: a young man asked me if I would video him and his girlfriend at waterfalls near Duluth. He then proceeded to kneel and propose marriage! On our last day, we were at a museum near the Vikings’ stadium. Lots of people were wearing purple for the game, but this couple took it to another level, with their purple camo.

Bonus: Nordstrom’s at Moose Lake State Park.

Re “up north”: about 50 miles north of St Paul we saw a sign that said “up north starts here”. At the bird observatory, however, they said “up north” started way, way north of Duluth!

All comments welcome.
