I'm still learning on skirt length but I think the length is fine, with a shorter top, or perhaps tuck in this top and use wide belt at the waist where the top and skirt meet up?

Is it still a "pencil" skirt if it doesn't taper back in? I thought that's what made a skirt "pencil". Thank you all for the help. Is the skirt too long period ? It is a petite, but I'm not adverse to having it hemmed when I have the money to do it.

Definitely try a pencil skirt, especially a denim one. Get a straight one, rather than the kind that tapers back down towards the knees and you should be golden for SAHM stuff. I wouldn't wear one to climb a jungle gym (but then, I wouldn't wear *any* skirt to climb a jungle gym), but I can get down on the floor, chase kids, etc. in mine just fine.

I agree with the others : skirt too long, shirt too long.

Jen, I've been having belting issues too the past couple of days. I have been trying to overcome my belt phobia but have abandoned them after an hour or two for the past 2 days (and quietly stuffed them in my desk drawer). I've come to the conclusion that the only way to get better at knowing when a belt works is to force myself to experiment with them, even when those experiments don't work. So if there's any point to this comment, I guess it's this: keep experimenting!

I don't have a pencil skirt. I do have a pair of rather more closely fitted shorts, maybe I'll try those. Pencil skirts scare me, much as I love skirts in general, they just seem to be more form fitting than I'm comfortable with for SAHM gear. I mean, can I get down on the floor to play legos in them? Climb a jungle gym? But I could try one for evening? Date night?

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear about your tummy bug :(

Do you have a pencil skirt? That's a better pairing with the top.

I'd also try lowering the belt a little so it sits more at your waist, rather than right under the bust and pulling the top up a bit so it looks shorter and gives a little room to move in. Maybe try shortening the skirt a bit too....You look lovely in that color! Kudos to you for posting! I think its great that you are making the effort to change/step up your style! You've definitely come to the right place for friendly, helpful suggestions and input....

Good on you for posting piccies. Love the turquoise on you.You have 2 great pieces there but perhaps not together? Like chewy said I'd add some slim fit bottoms to the top, pencil skirt, skinnies, clams. For the skirt a shorter more fitted top. Would you be up for getting the skirt shortened a bit? x

hmm that makes sense. So maybe the skirt with a more fitted top, and this top with a more fitted bottom. All right. I see it now that you say it. Its too flowy from top to bottom, and not really in a good way.

You look like an adorable apple- yes?
Belts might just not be the best look for you. I have a slight apple tendency, and I don't belt very often. They either look odd, move around, or get uncomfortable.
I think the proportions of the outfit are what's off. The skirt is a bit long, and the top is too long for a skirt. I think that top would work better with a slim bottom- clamdiggers, straight leg jeans or pants, etc.
I hope that helps.

Hi - good for you for posting - you're so pretty! I like the belt. The top looks a bit long to me for the skirt - I think it might be that rather than the belt that makes you unhappy with the look. What does it look like tucked in? Others will have other suggestions.

So, the girls had a stomach bug yesterday, and I could not post another pic. Also, apparently I really REALLY need to clean my mirror! But my goal is to post at least one outfit a week, preferably two, to get some help and force me to dress nicer.

Here are two versions of today, and I'm not happy with either.

http://picasaweb.google.com/sp.....7581285986
not belted

http://picasaweb.google.com/sp.....0724321986
belted, and I still think its wierd. Keep in mind I am seriously limited. This is one of only three belts I have. I WANT to like this look, and I want to try it, but this, this doesnt' seem to be working.

What is a basic belt wardrobe that I should be shooting for? I have three like I said, this one, a brown leather the same width, and a slightly more narrow brownish sash belt.

So. Skirt is Coldwater Creek, Top is Gap, belt is I don't remember.
