ladies, thanks so much for the feed back. it really helps.

joy and caro- my hair was a mess last week, for personal reason, i was 4 weeks behind in a cut and color. that was all sorted out yesterday, and i my hairdresser and i are moving towards a nice blonde for summer. we also cut about an inch off, and i am feeling lighter and brighter.

janet, suz, jan and kiwichik--i agree that the cardigans are looking tired, and i'm feeling "over" them myself. unfortunately, i'm struggling with what takes their place. last week the outdoor temps were i lived ranged from 30F to 80F, and the indoor temps were a consistent cold (its my corner of the building, other parts of the building are 10 degrees warmer).

neelie-i'm not really an accessories person. i wear scarfs every once in a while, but jewelry never. i used to buy jewelry thinking it would be a great way to add personality, but it would never get worn.

beth ann--it's funny, i have a pinterest board with styles that i like, but i realize now they are all casual looks. i'm going to have to start to make an effort to look for workwear looks.

k can shop--i'm struggling to add trendiness to my look. i'll buy a piece, and then i'm at a loss as to how to style it and make it work. i think your right about adding color.

shannon and cocolion--just wanted to say that since i have joined the ylf board, i look at your posts to help me find inspiration.

It is lovely to see you and you have fab style. I echo the earlier comments and agree the jacket outfits are stellar. For work I think this look carries an element of authority and professionalist, along with a modern look. The cardigan outfits look great on you but in my mind work better as casual. Again, I agree footwear is a great way to modernise a look and remain current. Looking forward to seeing more.

Another 1963 baby here! I turn 50 in June. I'm a singer and voice teacher working in a college setting -- surrounded by 20 year olds! I hear you!

I echo the others -- you have a lovely, youthful figure and you're doing so much right. The first and last jackets are stunning! Love the pointy toed shoes, too. The only question marks for me are the striped cardi (a little long?) and the top in #3 (which I can't see well, really).

Do you keep an inspiration clip file or a pinterest board of looks that you like -- not even looks you think you can wear, just that appeal to you?

So good to see you!

Congrtulations for posting your first WIW. So much good advice has already been posted so my comments really echo what others have said - love all the structured jackets. I think the top in 3 is the only dissonant note. I like the cardigan & black pants in 4 but like others think the striped cardigan is too long. However I could imagine it undone over skinny jeans for the week-end.

I like the idea of keeping all your lovely classic basics & changing things up with shoes & bags. Slowly adding pattern in small ways . I'm not too good at knowing what is on trend but I really like the idea of maybe a pair of leopard heels or a leopard belt.

Like you I turn 50 this year and although I don't really think about whether something is age appropriate I certainly think about whether it flatters my no longer svelte figure.

Hi, Great to see your wiws.
I love the jackets - they look great. The only thing I don't think is working is the stripe cardigan it is too long imo.
I agree with Joy about the hair & specs - if I find I'm feeling stale these are the first things I change:)

Congratulations on your first WIW. You have a great figure and style. If you want to take it to another level, I'd suggest looking for new, modern specs and possibly rethinking your hairstyle. Those make such a difference no matter what you wear. You have a wonderful footwear collection. Your jacket outfits are my favorites.

Hi! I just turned 50 last month and totally understand where you are coming from.

I really like the jackets and cardigans, the only thing that seems off are the pants/top combo in #3. I think the top is too long for that style of pant sto be worn untucked.

Would you consider adding some accessories to your outfits? A scarf or statement necklace or pin? That will add some interest/fun to the outfits and still be work appropriate, but may help define your personal style a bit.

Wow, your first WIW is excellent! Everything's well-styled and age appropriate. My favorite is #7. That Laundry jacket is still so on-trend, with the current utility jacket craze.

My second fave is #4. It's really simple but the simplicity allows those FAB flats and the perfect slim pants to shine.

Glad to meet you at last! Well done on your first WIW, this usually requires some courage to start but then it is very easy :-)
I SO get what you mean: I am 45 and work in software company which means pre-dominantly younger populace. I found the best way for me is to be myself because then I feel the most confident in myself and confidence projects to those around you.
I was nodding along all comments from the ladies above. Love the jacket looks. Cardigans less so but you can spruce them up if you wear more trendy pieces with them.
Footwear is very important, 1-2 pairs of current shoes with a personality revamps one's wardrobe dramatically. This was my problem pre-YLF: I had nice footwear but so boring and it dragged my style down.
Somehow #3 seems off to me. These pants look like slouchy on top but not enough. How do they look with a tucked in top? Also they are a bit too short but not tapered enough - not sure about them at all.

Whoo hoo for a first WIW post - always a huge step! It's so nice to finally "meet" you :)

First of all, you have a fabulous figure so I imagine you look pretty good in almost everything. Lucky you!

Like Janet and Suz, I prefer the jacket outfits on you. That first outfit is fantastic - the jacket has a beautiful shape and structure and lovely details that set it apart.

The last outfit, also with a jacket, has great shape and I like the safari style of it, added with your slim leg trousers and those fab red shoes, and you have a completely modern yet classic look.

As for the cardigan combinations, I quite like the one in pic #4 - it has a modern look to it with the slim trousers and shoes.

I'm afraid I find the striped cardigan quite long on you - how does it look unbuttoned? And although I love the colours in the top in pic #3 something about the style of that one reads a little less modern to me.

As someone who just turned 50 a few months ago, I totally relate to walking the fine line of being stylish but looking age appropriate (I hate that expression too Janet!). Personally I always want to be sure I remain true to myself in my style as well.

Fab post! I think you've got a great classic style. I suspect you are in the same quandary as I was until recently: I loved my classic style, but I really wanted to ramp it up somehow. I wasn't entirely sure how or why my style wasn't feeling right. Angie pointed out that what I was saying was that I wanted to add some trendiness to my style. She was so right! I think the first, easiest step to do that is to ramp up your footwear. Yours is very nice and the toe-less booties are great. However, I notice you don't have any bold color in these or strong pattern and that the one metallic bit is pretty conservative. Maybe consider adding something a little bolder? I took my first baby steps that direction by adding color, then adding prints, now metallic.

And Laundry definitely is still around! I just bought a great navy trench from Laundry a few weeks ago.

Yay!! So great to see you post at last! This calls for celebration!

I am with Janet. You look sensational in the jacket outfits. The structure gives you authority and it also shows your lovely figure to advantage.

I find the cardigans have less "oomph" -- but do take that with a grain of salt because like Janet, I'm sort of over cardigans for myself lately except for loungewear. I do think in your climate they fill a legitimate need (air conditioning, anyone??) and can be super useful. They can also look really good if worn just so. It's just that I, personally, have trouble finding the "just so" spot these days.

These all look completely age-appropriate to me.

Maybe you are craving a bit more "modern" in your "classic"? If so, how about some slouchy trousers for work -- there's a bit of a trend. Or what about a fabulous daytime clutch? Do you ever wear skirts at all? Maybe it's just a question of switching up a silhouette for a change?

Also, sometimes when we are craving a change, it can be helpful to look to our hair. Not saying that you should do that, by the way. It's just that I know that was a real (positive) game changer for me and helped move me forward in my own style.

Yay! Nice to see you!

I love the jacket outfits. Especially the first one! I'm not as fond of the cardigan looks, but I'm a bit over cardigans for myself at the moment, so that may be my personal bias.

I certainly think all of these are situation- and age-appropriate. (Although I balk a bit at the age-appropriate term. I'm only a couple of years behind you, and I hate the idea of a number dictating what I wear. It's all about being appropriate for where I'm going and what I'm doing, while staying true to myself and my aesthetic.)

I’ve been on this forum for a while now, and lurking for a
while before that, but these are my 1st WIW’s, so I thought I’d
start by telling you a little about me and my style/fashion needs and goals. I
would describe my overall style as classic, but I feel like my look has gotten
stale.

I’m going to turn (gulp) 50 this summer, and it has me a
little disconcerted. When I was in
my teens and early 20s I felt like I could interpret styles and trends. Now I
feel like I have the pieces and parts, but am missing the ability to pull
together.

I work for a fast growing company, were I am the oldest women
in my department. Our dress code
is business casual, with an emphasis on the business part; jeans and sneakers
are never allowed. We have a large group of 20 something, and every year we
bring in 2-3 new college grads. So
I want to make sure that I look “current”, but at the same time, I want to make
sure that I what I wear is age appropriate (loved CoCoLion’s post on this last
week).

This is what I wore to work this week. Many of the items are a few years old. Are
there any items that should be retired? Any ideas how to refine, update,
improve these outfits?

Thanks for taking the time to look; sorry this post is so
long.

Monday ---(1 & 2)

Blazer ---BR

Pants –Theory

Tuesday (3)

1st warm day of the year, so I thought I would
get away with no jacket or sweater, but office ended up being cold, and I ended
up wearing a denim jacket over this T for most of the day.
