We aren't seeing the skirt without the coat, which can affect fit and proportion. Here, it's A-line over A-line. A short jacket may have made the skirt look like a better fit. That said Shevia, perhaps altering it is a good idea anyway. What do you think?

Loving the blouse with the skirt, hose and booties. You look arty and elegant. xo

I'll have to take your word on the fit of the skirt, because I can't tell in the pictures, but it sounds like it would be well worth having it tailored.

Well I think this outfit works really well and I don't see frumpy anywhere. I like the fluidity and ease of the outfit with the bit of edge the booties provide.

And the venue looks lovely.

I think you look great and I love the pose on the stairs, though I do see Caro's point about half and half. the length of skirt and top are the same and they do say thirds and two third are better I think, though don't quote me on that!

Thank you for your kind words! The pictures made me think something is off. I think the suggestion that the skirt not fitting correctly made me feel off is a good one.

April, I knew nothing about this one before we went, but yes it is Verdi. The music is wonderful.

The booties are Angie's Zara booties, which I found just after she mentioned hers. I love how the ankle cuff is so fitted and offsets (at least in my mind) the volume and potentially frumpy midi length.

Caro your point is well taken and very helpful.

Anna you know I will be heading off to style.com to look up that Marni show next - I love how you can reference like that.

Thank everyone for your thoughtful comments!

ETA Angie I will definitely tailor!

It is hard to make a proper assessment, but I wonder if the coat length makes the skirt seem frumpy? Maybe a moto would have changed the look?

I think you look great - if the skirt is too big it could be what feels off. The only other thing I can see (& it may not be accurate because of the angle of the photo) is that your hair & top seem to be one half & the skirt/tights/booties the other - maybe play with the top or half tuck it to see if a change in proportion feels better - if not please ignore

shevia, I think you look great! I find that skirt length difficult to get away with but you have done it! I think the way that it is just a little longer than the coat makes it work! The colour of the top looks lovely on you and the patent leather ?brogue-like boots are a real feature of the outfit! Bravo! Encore!

You look so elegant! I especially love how the pointy booties give it a little edge. The only suggestion I can possibly think of is that maybe I could see a more dramatic bag for contrast. Like something in a color or an interesting texture? And the opera house is such a lovely backdrop!

Thank you Joy - the pose was a function of the shallow stairs, but does offset some of the frump!

Thanks Diana. The skirt is problematic and I should do a separate post on how I should tailor it, the material is stunning but you can't see that here.

Anna - Un ballo in maschera. Amelia was amazing but the staging was bizarre. The skirt is more than a smidge big but the material is gorgeous - I know I have to get it tailored but I grabbed it last minute to wear anyway.

ETA

Suz I think the photos are dark which sort of makes it impossible to assess the skirt. Special what to do with this skirt post is definitely in order. But thanks!

I am having trouble making out the details of the skirt (on my laptop) so I am not sure if there is anything wrong with the outfit at all, but from what you have said, it's possible the skirt's fit was bothering you.

I think you look great. My first thought was that lighter/nude hose might have been better, but seeing that in #2 your hose looks pretty darn sheer I think it's just an artifact of the poor lighting in picture #1.

I guess if I'm being nitpicky I might say that the top and skirt in #1 look to be the same length and I'd like them to be a little more different in length. So maybe tuck the top in, although that may not be possible given that you said the skirt is worn low on the hips. But honestly I think the outfit as is is fine.

DH and I went to the opera last week. This is what I wore, now what should have I done to fix it? (I included a crowd shot to give a sense of the crowd for those who might wonder.) The skirt is too big on me and I let it sit low on my hip to make it maxi length, but I may have taken it to frumpy length.
Thanks for looking, commenting and suggesting!
