My husband's main area of research is tranpslant related care and he is the senior scientific officer for the registry that montiors data on all transplants in the US trying to make the process more transparent and fair. Here is the update: he is feeling better with a stent in to drain bile build-up, but they are sending him to Seattle to be evaluated for getting on the transplant list. Alaska does not have the medical facilities for liver transplants, so they will have to relocate somewhere, most likely Seattle. Traci, they are looking into exactly what you've said as far as the lists and statistics.</p> <p>GP, you've hit the nail on the head. I don't really understand how they triage the people who are in need, but there's that fine line between not sick enough and too sick, and the particular disease he has is so rare they don't even know how it plays out. They just did a biopsy to see if he has cancer which would mean he could not get a transplant.</p> <p>It's just a bad situation all around, because my friend is also disabled with dystonia. They have a 15 year old daughter who's like a niece to me, and a son in college. Anyway, they are here with me though next week. A friend of mine recently went through the same thing with her husband needing a transplant. They waited for a liver here in WI for many many months. Eventually they moved down to New Orleans to get him on the transplant list there and he had a liver w/i the month. Apparently the systems vary by location and some states have an abundance of available organs while others have people dying on the lists.
