I dunno, speakers at our conferences don't dress zingy but do wear jackets and , you know, shoes! I think wearing separates was perfect. It's hard to hit the right balance of " polish" and autharotative but not trying too hard. Pants dresses it down a notch, and flat shoes, no clickety heels, sometime a jacket that has a sporty vibe, not too dressy. I notice you said "American" scientific conferences. I'm guessing you've had similar experiences as I have dealing with scientists in Europe, which is that they do tend to express themselves more through dress than scientists here. I remember the first Dutch immunologist I met first time over.
