Good call on the blue, you look radiant in that color! As for the top, I too struggle with a big bust and have found that small round necklines like this tend to mimic the shape of each breast so I avoid them. I have much better luck with v-necks and wrap style shapes. Color blocking is also a great way to distract the eye with new shapes.

That's how this was. Stone driveway, wet uneven field, dirt-floored (mostly) barn. I wore silver Aerosole flats that I can't find online to collect, but they are shaped just like these Toms.

We just got an invitation to a barn wedding! We would be lucky if it rained because otherwise it will probably be in the 90s and I'll be sweating like there's no tomorrow.

I thought your outfit looked fine, but I don't have anything like that. And what kind of shoes did you wear? Evidently nothing is paved, just dirt.

I pretty much have to ditto exactly everything Suz said! I love the blue shades on you, and as another short-waisted, large-busted woman, I totally get the frustration around how this kind of top looks (particularly in photos -- I always think that it looks better IRL). This is when I think prints are my friend (camouflaging and keeping the eye moving around), and also V-necks. I can't tell you how many times I think a style would have been improved on me by opening up the neck.

At any rate, you look great, and it sounds like a fun but challenging event to dress for! Similar to my recent rock'n'roll wedding -- another rainy wedding on a farm!

Lisap, I am making a list and going shopping with my daughter on her birthday this Friday! I really never would have thought of *that, either, but I believe you because you always look great to me. I love cobalt on me, even more than navy. Navy's my comfort zone, but cobalt makes me happy.

I want to go to a barn wedding ! Especially with that glorious light show ! Anyways , I'm another who gets this whole "not looking how I want to but working hard at it " thing . I also relate oh-too-well to the short-waist big-bust issue in tshirts - especially when paired with a skirt . That skirt is such a great print though - and you know what might work for another look ? A navy or cobalt cap sleeved shirt with tails long enough to knot in front , or to hang loose . Pop the collar to draw eyes up to your face and hair , add some statement earrings and open a button or two more than you'd typically be comfortable with . It works on bodies like ours .

Sheila, thanks for the advice (and the others of you who suggested I try a shorter and tighter top). I do indeed try to camouflage the chest with a looser, longer top, and I will see what I can do before I wear the skirt again. This shape was great when I was younger and smaller, but now I feel like Jessica Rabbit at times. I think that the tank/cardigan combo might have been more flattering. Aida, I think you nailed it with what was bothering me with the sleeves. BrieN, I was going to wear a silver bracelet instead of the necklace but my daughter told me I HAD to wear a necklace, and I defaulted to my preppy-middle-age pearls (as did many of the other women there, I noticed). You can put the old prep in a barn but as long as she has her pearls on she's still in her comfort zone, lol.

I did get drenched! But we fixed each other's hair a bit and used our cellphones to see if we looked hideous, and I guess it turned out ok, if a bit flat on the top.

Onward and upward!

Hah yeah that dress could would have me in fits too! Looks like you were able to get to the barn in time (or else you got the photo in on time ). Those are some gloomy looking clouds. Blue is lovely on you! If you want a little practical advice re the outfit (which looks nice, by the way) I would say you are onto something with the top. To me it is the sleeve shape that's causing issues here; it's angled right in towards your bust. Something with longer sleeves (e.g. elbow length to draw the eye to your little waist) or shorter sleeves (e.g. flutter sleeves to give a little extra width to your shoulders which would balance your bust a bit) might be better. Do you tuck at all? I think this outfit would also look much crisper tucked.

You look perfectly attired and more than fabulous for a "grab a chair and run for cover" event! I really like the blue on you! Skirt is great - nice straight lines there and the top is fine - you might try around with it being a big shorter or a bit more fitted at the waist if alterations are a possibility but the neckline is really good and I don't know what you mean about your arms... the sleeves look a little loose on you, if anything. If I could change one thing, it might be switch out the necklace for a silver bracelet maybe? I'm not an accessories person so I'd have to see photo of both options to know for sure.

That is one of the most challenging dressing situations possible. You are a real trouper. It is not easy to go to an event like this where there's some expectation that you will look "nice" but the weather and the environment make that well nigh impossible and are more suited to overalls or a raincoat.

Blues really are your friend. (Waving to another blues-lover!) And your outfit looks flattering and appropriate.

Yes, I agree...you look radiant in blue! And also I would examine the length of your top and try folding it up for a photo to see if you like the proportion better. I think a shorter top might make you happier.

I have a large bust for my height and all my life I have tried to camouflage it with a looser, lengthy top. I have come to realize that, for me, this is not a flattering look. I also have a substantial 'spare tire' around my waistline. Though I have lost over 30 pounds recently, that danged spare tire still exists. You don't appear to have a thick middle like I do, so I would encourage you to try more form-fitting tops. It might require alterations but hopefully you can do these yourself...

And finally, thank you SO MUCH for posting. There is an inherent pressure to only show our best but, as always, I know I learn the most when I am honest with myself if I have missed the mark I was aiming for.

This was originally titled "what I wore to a barn wedding, and am posting even though I realize it didn't turn out the way I'd hoped" but apparently that was too long. Went to a barn wedding, in a field, with severe thunderstorms, and a suggested dress code on their Knot page that said "casual," "semiformal," "whatever you feel comfortable in," and "formal." We were all texting each other the day before saying "what are YOU wearing?" I wore a JJill knit skirt, an LL Bean lace tee from last summer, and flat silver Aerosoles that look like Toms. What worked: the colors. I always feel like myself in blues. The skirt was great and I wish I'd gotten it in another print when it was still around. What didn't: The shirt, which appears to magnify my large chest and short waist and heavy arms, even with my most supportive bra. I originally intended to wear a white tank and a navy cardigan, but the temps started in the 90s (but dropped after the thunderstorms hit at the beginning of the outdoor ceremony). We all had to "grab a chair and head for the barn" as the father of the groom told us a minute before the storm hit and everyone was drenched. The party barn didn't have a bathroom with a mirror so all the ladies did our best to arrange our wet hair, as you can see.

I don't look the way I'd like to, but I'm trying, and I've made a lot of progress in the past couple years. I appreciate seeing people post WIWs who don't have model-builds, so I'm going to try to post more of mine.
