I used to go to a Renaissance Festival every year and invested only in a killer Wool hooded full length cape. It was so much fun to dress up (even though I only ever wore it over my regular clothes. I loved it. I've seen similar events of this sort in England, but must admit that German version felt much more - authentic. (Like I know what it was like in the medieval times, but I assume this is as good approximation as you can get it )</p> <p>The whole event took place around an old castle - and this is not a palace sort of thing, but smallish building more like the fortress, which felt less overwhelming in scale and easier to picture the real people of that era and life buzzing around it.</p> <p>We had no idea what to expect, so were very amused to see that not only performers of various sorts were dressed up in the costume replicas of the clothing from those days, but the visitors too. Judging by the variety of clothing and everyone being dressed up, from small children to men and women of all ages, seems like people have a thing for these kinds of costumes. There were skillfully made ones with intricate details and embroidery, but also simple, obviously DIY-ones which people wore with so much pride. Seriously, it felt like we were on a set of some film being made. Knights, hunters, ladies, peasants, barefoot children - they were all these. So fun!</p> <p>The weather was rainy, so between the downpours when we were hiding under the big tents, it took a lot of tiptoeing to avoid getting muddy The smell of wet air and smoke from the open fires really added to the whole atmosphere. All senses were tricked into thinking we have travelled back in time!</p> <p>Style-wise, I was mesmerized by the ladies' dresses, especially those with long, fluted sleeves (many stalls were selling those), of course, but also the simplicity of the rough tunics made of fabrics like linen or wool worn by the 'peasants'... accessorized by the plain leather betts that the 'knives' or money pouches were hanging from. </p> <p>And then the cloaks, sooo cool!</p> <p><strong>What I wore</strong><br /> Well, since it was cold on the day I started from the jacket. Remembering that in those days there were no bright colors, but very plain and earthy, I took the olive-green jacket as my starting point. I added the navy striped tee shirt, one that remains a favorite after recent non-tee direction taken, and added the scarf for the warmth, also skinnies and oxfords (completely inappropriate shoes, but in my defense I had not a clue what to expect - and I did save them from getting muddy.)</p> <p>If we go there next year, which my son is already asking about, I'm seriously thinking about making a dress or something for myself :-)</p> <p>Photos<br /> 1.
