Runcarla – I like that idea! I’m using it this week to pull
outfits together. My theme is loosely based around graphic prints.

Aida – good point about the sweater, it could work better in
a more retro outfit.

Karie – thank you so much for the compliments!! I really
liked being able to see them all together like this, so I’m continuing it for a
couple more weeks at least.

Isabel – Not sure how successful an exercise like that would
be (for me), but it’s interesting to consider.

Firecracker – Your statement, “They look like one person,
dressing for different occasions or to achieve different vibes” describes
perfectly what I want!

La Belle – I’m so glad you used the term Geek Chic , it
totally has me thinking. I love scifi (OBviously!!) and comic books and lots of other nerdy stuff,
and hadn’t realized until just when I read your comments that those are
elements I would really like to incorporate into my style more.

E – Yes, I agree, and that’s where I need to refine and hone
things. Figuring out how to style things in that direction.

Trekkiegirl, I think there's a way to do cutesy/prim/retro that still has a bit of a rocker vibe to it, like rockabilly women. And if you feel good in prim outfits, keep doing what you're doing! I like LBD's styling suggestions for the umbrella sweater.

I like all of your outfits! I don't know about how 'cohesive' they are for Trekkiegirl the Person, but the cohesive elements I see are a certain sort of intelligent Geek Chic, and a 'completeness' in your ensembles. You look very polished to my eye - hair, makeup, nails, the neatness of your garments. Nowhere do I get a feeling of multiple personalities. There is a unifying element in all of it. Again, I think it is the polished, finished look of your outfit and your appearance.

#3 does seem somehow out of place. Not because it doesn't seem you, but because it lacks the same level of polish and sophistication and forethought your other outfits have. But you did say you were short on time that day, so that makes sense.

I'm wondering what that umbrella sweater would look like paired with a leather pencil skirt and some flats and the red jeans+ a short sleeve black top + high heels (I'm thinking of Rizzo in the former, and Cha-Cha DiGrigorio in the latter - at the part in Grease, when Cha-cha gives the signal and the cars race. Bad girl retro).

This is an interesting study in style, and such a compelling argument for posting a week's outfits at a time. (I wonder if I could have the discipline to do that; sometimes I just want to get the post out there, now!) Honestly, you wear all of these outfits beautifully. It's a matter of what you feels suits you more. But here's my take on cohesion:
I find the last three outfits to have the most consistent character, even though they differ in feeling. They look like one person, dressing for different occasions or to achieve different vibes. 3 looks like a very comfortable casual-chic pulled-together outfit, ready for a day off or a day of work in a casual-dress setting. 5 has a little extra rocker and retro feel to it, for taking you into the evening's band venue. And 4 is the studious, ladylike retro office version of the other two.

1 is my least favorite outfit here, perhaps because it's less like something I'd wear, but someone mentioned Stevie Nicks, and it does evoke her style to me. I think I see it as something of an outlier because it seems more of a studied look, as it reflects more of a Goth or ethereal presence, a character in a different world than the last three outfits.

2 looks quite preppy to me, and that is not a look I would have associated with your style. You don't need to ditch the sweater; I think it's mainly the combination of the pinned hair with the total look. If you had your hair puffy, it would look quite different to my eye. Or if you changed to the blazer in 3, or wore a pair of high-waisted trousers and heels with the sweater. . . . Basically if you switched out one item in the whole look for something less neat-tidy-prim, you'd probably be out of the slightly preppy territory that this one seems to be heading into.

Maybe this is more of a "who am I" than a "how do I want to look"?
Sometimes, when my own sense of direction isn't relaying a clear signal about where to go next it's helpful to imagine what someone else would do. And the "someone else" doesn't even have to be a real person.
Of course you'll still be making your own choice but sometimes seeing it as something outside yourself rather than feeling it from the inside can make it easier to act the part.

First of all, I love, love, LOVE the outfit in #4. Retro fun indeed! I've been in a retro mood lately and it's great to see someone rockin' the retro look. All the elements work well together, and your glasses look great with this.

A super cool casual outfit in #5, and I like the bright pink layering. Polka dots and ruffles? A better combination wouldn't be possible!

#3 - the olive jacket compliments your skin tone and hair. There must have been something in the air last week, I let my hair go wavy too.

That sweater in #2 is super fun and a nice winter mood-lifter.

#1 - another very well done outfit. Punk ballerina and gorgeous. Excellent cat eye makeup.

I love your multiple personality reference in your goal comment. I do the multiple personality thing in outfits too, and while sometimes it's intentional and fun to do, I have been focusing on creating a more cohesive / less scattered look overall. Weekly outfit round-ups definitely help in figuring all this out. Last year (school year, Sept.-June), I did monthly outfit round-up posts and it really helped me figure out my style, style goals, what I liked and what I needed to change. It's a powerful learning journey (and one that I'm still on), and one that I employ my roller coaster mantra to: "Enjoy the ride!"

I think it's entirely possible to be eclectic and still have cohesiveness, you just have to get a handle on which eclectic leanings you want to encourage (this is something I continually have to keep focused on for myself). I see what Janet sees, #2/4 both have a similar retro vibe, #3/5 have a similar rugged/urban vibe. To me #1 is a slight outlier, but with different footwear the vibe could easily be changed enough to be more in line with your other outfits; booties to skew it more urban, tall boots to skew it more retro, combat boots to give it a little old school punk. I can also see what others are saying about #2 being too prim/sweet, but I think it works quite nicely with your retro side. Perhaps spunkier hair is all it needs to add a little extra sass? And across the lot you're fairly consistent with polished hair and makeup that has a retro flair, which adds an extra dose of cohesiveness.

OK, I just had to chime in after E's post -- I have gotten sucked into watching Orphan Black! That actress is SO good at playing all of those clone roles. I see what she's getting at, as the second look you posted really does seem more prim (soccer mom Allison on OB) and I think your more natural inclination is a little more rock, although not as RATE as Sarah Manning). As long as you don't go for the Helena look (below) ;-) I think you can I really work the more sophisticated and the more fun/retro looks equally well.

Posting weekly makes a lot of sense, especially if you are trying to tackle a style challenge. I usually pick a theme and pull clothes to make a week of work outfits - in essence a capsule. Then I mix and match the items in different ways. Since one item (or maybe just a colour) is carried over from the previous day, there is at least one common denominator. (I once did a whole month exploring cobalt...but I'm a little OC that way!)

Another time I chose a favourite formula - pencil skirt, t-style top, and Jean style jacket. I didn't repeat any item from one day, but the lines/shape were the same. Luckily I own three different Jean style jackets, and (more than) 3 different pencil skirts!

Sunday night is reserved for capsule making and putting outfits together, but I reserve the right to change things up depending on how I feel, or what the weather looks like, in the am of the given day I am dressing. I just try to stick to the items I already set aside in my capsule.

Sorry, I'm not a fan of the Steevie Nicks look in #1 but everything else works (to my eye.). I don't feel I know you enough to comment on your 'one true' style though I do follow your posts. My favourites are when you dip you toe into retro. You do seem to be able to do it in a non-costumey way. I also think E is on to something!

Citygirl - A vote for mustard, not against! Throwing me for a loop you guys You're right about today though, the punk pony swoop would have been perfect with this outfit, but I wanted to curl it a bit... okay in reality I was just being lazy. The dang blond hairline I have from dying it dark red is a PAIN to cover up with makeup. I really need to get another box and touch it up!

Sara - You're absolutely right about the whimsical print and bright colors being far less rock and much more conservative. I haven't decided if this style will get weeded out permanently, or just lessened a bit. Or maybe punkd up a bit somehow haha... the pants and sweater combo is a FFBO I've had for a long time, so it's definitely less than current as far as my style goes.

Kiwigal - thanks very much! I do love the vintage looks, and feel really good when I nail them. I honestly don't always!

Rabbit - I like your idea of a mood board. Pinterest awaits... Hair up for the ballerina dress would have been much better I'm sure! I've been lazy of late, not putting it up as much. And again with #2... preppy is definitely not a desirable style descriptor for me. But I do love this sweater so, I feel I must find a way to redeem it!

E - Powerful is not normally how I would think to describe myself, although I supposed I am strong if I think about it. I've been through some crazy shit! Maybe this rocker thing I've been latching onto is a subconscious way of expressing that. I've heard of the show, but haven't watched it. And see, here is where I get hung up: I like cutesy and prim too! I just wish I didn't feel like such a chameleon, or like I am putting on various costumes throughout the week. I have this internal need for consistency, but my actual tastes are so varied that I'm having trouble narrowing it down.

So a few votes against the mustard yellow now, hmm. Might be on to something here. What about the lemon yellow cardi from this post?

Monday - hmmmm. ummm. I can't remember if I posted on this photo earlier.

Tuesday - this outfit, while bright and preppy, does not capture "YOU" in my eyes. It's a nice outfit but doesn't capture your edge. Love you hair pulled back. That's the thing with long hair, you can do so much.

Wednesday - I veer towards darker colors and I like this on you.

Thursday - My fave, maybe because that mustard top looks incredible with your hair color and skin color. Oh, and the retro thing is what I totally like.

Friday - LOVE THIS ROCKIN look. So you. The printed black top gives the outfit that oomph. I would have liked to have seen your hair twisted on top and pony tail in the back, kind of giving the rockabilly look. But you ROCK. No pun intended. OR pun intended. Ha!!

I'm going to offer you my opinion, since you asked for it, with the usual disclaimer that this is just my view, and you're free to ignore it all! :)

I think 2 stands out as quite different from the rest. You look less powerful here, if that makes sense. You need some studs on your skinnies and black belt/shoes or something to edge it up. Or to somehow make it less prim (and I'm a big fan of prim, cutesy looks in general, so that's not a general poison eye speaking, lol). 3 & 5 are my favourites: they look most organic to you & are beautifully flattering too. I love the offhand glamour they both exude!

The difference reminds of Orphan Black, which is a show about clones, in which the same actress plays multiple characters (and she does it SO well!). I couldn't find many good full-body shots, but I'm attaching a few photos of two of the characters. It's not that she doesn't look good in the soccer mom get up, but then you see her in the badass look, and you let out a deep breath you hadn't realised you'd been holding. If that makes sense (again...I had a cafe au lait this afternoon and don't usually drink coffee, so I'm a bit wired & might be off my rocker! lol). 1 & 4 are fun too & make 'sense' to me in the context of you & the rest of the outfits.

Also, I agree with Rabbit that the yellow sweater isn't my favourite colour on you, in this lighting at least. It doesn't look terrible, but it doesn't make you glow like the other colours do.

I think your project is an interesting and thoughtful one. I feel like experimentation and trying everything at some point is very useful and creative, but then narrowing down a little (I'm still pretty eclectic) makes things flow so much more easily -- there is a coherence which I feel when I'm wearing the clothes, and choices about what to add and remove from the wardrobe become much more obvious to me.

One thing I'm finding kind of helpful is making a mood board of the vibe, colors, patterns, textures, shapes etc. I want to wear in a particular 1/2 year season (this is partly based on clothes I have, but partly about responding to trends or colors I'm suddenly into, or just the natural environment). Then I can kind of experiment to create that capsule with the clothes I have and test run some ideas for it. Also it allows me to move and shift in the next season, but there is a coherence and a chance to know a particular look deeply that comes from focusing on it for a few months. Also creating a quick outfit becomes so much easier.

Of your looks above I think #3 and #5 have the most coherence with each other, and are my favorite two looks. (I love your growly face lol). I think they work great as is.

#1 -- I like the chiffon-y skirt but I think I want different footwear for proportion reasons. Also maybe with your hair up if going for a ballerina vibe. Does the jacket in # 3 or #5 work over the dress? I can see hair up, jacket, bare legs, and heels (in boots or ankle straps or something) maybe being interesting to try.

#2 -- this is pretty adorable, but looks a bit younger/preppier in vibe than the other looks, so I'm not sure about the coherence.

#4 -- this reads a little older. I like the belt too! I'm unsure about the mustard yellow, I think it works with your makeup in the close up, but I'm not as sure about it with your skin tone in the full body shot (although lighting can throw things.)

Whilst you look great every day in like 3 4 5 the best....i like the layering, the colours and the hair styles. I have a soft spot for 4 because I love the retro vibe and you do it so well.

I'm not that good at style analysis but I'll give it a shot. It's not the hair in #3 - it's the red pants and whimsical sweater. It doesn't have the rocker or punk aspect that I associate with your style. Even #4, which has the retro feel, somehow feels more rocker-ish. I'm not saying you need to dress in black every day, but somehow the bright colors and whimsical print together feel more conservative than your other outfits.

Keturah - you are such a sweetie <3
The shoes on Monday were my black flats with a slightly pointed toe and gold studs on the heels. I can see how I look barefoot now though! In my Monday post I included a picture of the shoes but I didn't here. And that damn bathroom is so dark >.<
I think I agree with your assessment of Tuesday. If I had done something with my hair (washed it?? lol) or maybe better shoes or jewelry perhaps...
I'm glad it doesn't seem disjointed to you, and I like your "romantic fairytale" reference. I can really relate to that! I'm very much a dreamer at heart :)

Isabel - by consistency and coherence, I think I mean in overall style. Not to look like I'm a completely different person each day. Not that I want to look the same every day either, but just not so all over the spectrum - I used to dress hippie boho one day, and super conservative buttoned up the next. Mostly because I was just using what I had, which wasn't necessarily a wardrobe of my choosing. While this week is much better than in the past, I still feel there is room for more refining.

Janet - thanks for your input! I thought about wearing my knee high front lace boots, but I felt like
that would completely demolish the floaty spring vibe and take it into
goth club territory!

Funny, Wednesday was not my personal favorite, but others seem to like it best so far.
I do feel that it is a great outfit, and was very comfortable to wear. I liked the jacket buttoned up but my boobage is a little too ample for that right now lol.!

Well, I think you have really cool, eclectic style, and even though it varies in mood and era from day to day, I think it all works for you. Tuesday and Thursday seem more retro/fun, and Wednesday/Friday seem more sophisticated. The W/F looks are my favorites, but that's probably because they look the most like what I would choose to wear! Monday looks perhaps a little more costumey to me -- maybe because I see what Keturah means about the shoes. I can't tell what shoes you have on, but I think they might look too ballerina-ish, while a more substantial boot would counter a bit of that vibe.

Like Keturah, I love 3, everything about is great, the style, ease of wear including appropriateness, the colors, and you also look just plain very, very pretty.
I looked at the photos before reading the text and my second thought, after the above, was how varied your style message is.
I'm not sure what you mean when you say consistency. Actual Items? Personas?
I do think your decision to post by week rather than day was kind of brilliant, and very illuminating.

And I don't think the week looks chaotic! I think you like various styles. What I do see is a thread of natural, and a thread of romantic fairytale running through it all. You choose rich colors, leather, retro sweetness, and items with a theatrical edge to them. The ethereal dress, pin dot blouse, and utility jacket with puffed shoulders/sleeves from Wednesday are good examples of this.

Just my thoughts.

xoxo and MWAH!

OOOH!!! I love love love! You're such a gorgeous lady with good taste.

Okay...

1 - I would have loved to see it with a more substantial shoe. Or are you barefoot? (Sorry!! I can't tell from photos.) I think it's nice on you. Definitely has that romantic/tough blend that you do so well. The jewelry is my favorite part. :)

2 - Probably my least favorite. It seems to take away from the strength, energy and glam you have. I feel its the grand sum of the parts. I could see you rocking any one of these separately. But there's not enough "oomph" to this outfit on its own. It's missing that edge, that boldness. It feels to young, and there is nothing to balance all of the sweetness.

3. favorite! This just compliments you in every single way. Theres a nice blend of romantic, with a hint of Tough/RATE. The colors, textures, and lines are gorgeous on you. It's like I just met a modern version of Arwen...

4. I'm in retro heaven. This is delicious and fun! You have such a wonderful eye for color, balance, lines, and shapes. Holy cow! That belt is the crowning jewel! I think I would have preferred this with a warmer lip? Or perhaps a more natural/nude lip? The red kind of competes with all of the rich yellow and chocolate (or olive?).

5. Concert rocker! This is great on you too! The pin dot blouse add some sugar to all the sass and RATE of the leather and black. Another winner!

Usually I post my WIW's day-by-day. But I decided I wanted to try it a week at a time for a while, for a couple reasons:
1 - One of my goals is to create a more cohesive style across multiple outfits, less chaotic and less like multiple personalities. There are some deeply personal emotional and psychological motivations for this, which I won't go into publicly, but am happy to talk about if anyone is curious and wants to pm me. Seeing my outfits in chunks, I think, will help me better determine if/when I'm meeting this goal, and how I can better achieve it.
2 - I guess I don't have another reason LOL that's the main one. Although I have noticed that since I stopped posting a daily WIW (I did on Monday, but that was before I had decided this) I've spent more time thinking about other things like purging, planning, execution, styling certain items etc, and less about "omg what am I wearing right now" and I think that's positive.

So here they are, Monday-Friday:

Monday: The punk (or Goth, as E said) ballerina look. I felt very springy in this, because the fabric was so floaty and ethereal and has gold thread throughout, despite being in all black. There is a micro-mesh shirt layered under the dress, since it has no sleeves and a plunging v-neckline with halter straps. My makeup was dramatic on the eyes, and softened with pink lips and flushed cheeks. Finished off with art-deco style gold and pink jewelry.

Tuesday: Playful FFBO, and my bangs were a greasy mess so I pinned them to the side. Looks a bit mod, no? Very minimal jewelry, I was rushing and basically didn't have time to put anything else on. I love this sweater and tend to wear it when I need a pick-me-up. Since we had just gotten half a foot of snow, it was sorely needed! My lips were a really cool orchid color, a combo of some pink and purple lipstick. Pics don't do it justice.

Wednesday: Utilitarian simplicity. The jacket is a dark olive, but looks brown in some lights. I love all the pockets and details. You can't see them well in these pics, but the shoulders have a buttoned shoulder strap. The shirt underneath is a fluid short sleeve boatneck tee in Indian Blue, and those are my new brown boots. Was really happy with my hair that day, it's wavy as a result of blow-drying it to just damp then pinning up in a bun for about an hour while it dried the rest of the way.

Thursday: Retro fun!! This midi skirt has been a challenge to style, but I think I finally got it. I have a similar one in navy that was a disaster when I wore it, and that almost made me get rid of them both. I'm glad I didn't. The brooch could be obnoxious in some settings, but I think it works with this outfit, and I wore a small pearl on thin gold necklace to match it. Not to overdo the pearl theme, my earrings are small gold spheres (I do have large faux pearl earrings lol). I also really love this tortoiseshell belt, it is becoming a workhorse, and really pulls things together in a way that a solid black belt can't. Plus I love that it works with brown or black, since I don't wear brown nearly as often as I do black.

Friday: Feminine rocker chic. I like that the polka dots and ruffles on the shirt add some softness to the look. I layered a bright pink tank underneath for extra warmth and because the shirt itself is quite short, which would result in some inappropriate belly-baring at work lol. We are going to see a friend's band play a show tonight, so I wanted to look casually cool, I think it works.

Looking across all these, I feel like I have achieved some consistency. The retro Thursday outfit might be the outlier, but it is definitely one of my favorite looks. The fact that my hair styles change so often creates a bit of a mashup too, but the bangs being there most the time help with that.

What do you think? Does this week look hectic or together to you?
Which day/outfit is your favorite, and least favorite?
If you were to change anything about any of the outfits, what would you change? Thanks in advance, I appreciate any and all input!
