I agree! I was attracted by the texture on the tank tops and completely ignored the fit issues! Something I will be more aware of in the future as I am trying to be mindful and picky about my purchases!

Just from reading your post, two fit issues that you often run into jumped out at me: armholes too big and necks too gappy. If you're looking for tops to let go of, those are two criteria to use. You could probably also be more stringent about those two things when you're buying tops, which would cut down the number of items you bring in.

Great feedback above. I like both the peplum w/skirt outfit and the other sleeveless with skirt outfit (but am considering Marley's comments). Both of those tops are keepers. I like #7/8 but would prefer with not leggings also. You have some great looks here!

I understand now about the blouse length! With a more substantial ponte pant, a shorter length blouse would work. I am still unsure what type of topper would be nice with this look?

Marley, so nice to hear there is another nail polish person around. I would probably change my color more frequently if I had the time and patience to sit and let it dry! I so appreciate your honesty about my WIW looks!

I like the idea of pairing an upscale sweatshirt with my pencil skirt, and I have some that I can try this look with.

You are so right, the peplum mixed with the pencil skirt looks stiff. I don't have any tube skirts, but I do have a pair of track pants that are loose and draped, and perhaps I can test the peplum with these?

I was definitely frustrated by the white jeans cuff, and could not get it to look less bulky. I think the best solution is to cut off the pants and hem them. I have several pairs of these jeans, so I wouldn't miss a pair if I shortened them. I just have to pick the correct length.

Regarding look 7. I was unsure what type of topper to put with this look, plus I had to choose from those that I already own, I am smirking in the picture with the green topper because i initially thought the look was funny. I wore it all day because the air conditioning was freezing!!! The blouse is even longer than the topper in back than in front, but the topper is still high low. The blouse is definitely longer than my crotch, but maybe not by as much as you think it should be? It's perhaps 3-4 inches. I would probably have to purchase a dress in order to get this look otherwise. I am tall, and I'm guessing it would be hard to find blouses that would be much longer than this.

Regarding long sleeves: I would love to find some long sleeved tops that fit! So hard! If anyone knows of tops that are created to fit someone with my type of frame I would be grateful. (From someplace other than J Crew please)

Yes - I agree with Aida. There is a big difference between leggings and ponte knit pants. You can wear a top that stops at the crotch with the ponte knits - but no way with leggings.

A pair of ponte pants works much better as a legging with shorter tunic tops! I suggest looking for a pair with a little additional interest, like a faux leather front or stripe down the side. Makes it look even less like the thinner yoga legging.

NIce pics! It's fun to help you work through your ivory tower. My fave is 6.

I like both lengths of shorts, but I do prefer the shorter ones. You have the legs for them, wow! I like the somewhat-loose top semitucked with the shorts in #2; I think that is a good silhouette on you.

I love both 4 and 6—really sharp. However, I personally find the black sandals in the citron skirt outfit a little heavy. Would something lighter work?

The hi-tops are fun...good for you for trying them out! What would happen if instead of doing one big roll with the jeans you did two smaller rolls? (I don't know; I'm just asking the question.)

The leggings outfit looks good too, and like you say, it is a departure. But I think that's really how we hone our style, but trying new things and finding our whether they're a yes or a no over time.

Aida, thanks for your feedback on the shirt with look 2. I deliberately didn't say anything about that top. I was unsure I liked it paired with those shorts, or at all, and was hoping someone would say something.

The pencil skirt looks are also fairly new for me but somehow they don't seem as foreign as the leggings. I think I've had more time for my eye to adjust to them. I figured out they might be good for me sometime this summer. I'm definitely still experimenting with them.

Look, #7 is so different from what I have typically worn, but I was inspired by Angie's descriptions of what might work for someone with a Rectangular body shape. It was so soft and cozy. I was happy with it. I was testing the silhouette, so I used thinner jersey leggings, but I would definitely follow through with more substantial ponte pants once No Spend September is over. I have to make do for now - I am a woman of her word!

Perhaps that should be the first item on my buy list? I don't own any!

Ok - since you're trying to eliminate some of your ivory tops I'm going to hyper-picky about these!
Here goes!

1) Yes - if it has a hole - it goes! Shorts are a great length on you!

2) This shape of top is pretty dated - the sleeves don't have the modern angular cut - and the crew neck just makes this come across as your standard t-shirt. If you are going for a more modern look - I'd ditch this shirt. Also, the shorts are a great length (I think!) for hanging out at your house, but I wouldn't wear them out in public because of the length - but then, I have a "thing" about the length of shorts on grown-ups - I know other forum members wear them this short, so if you're comfortable go for it! You certainly have the legs for them!

3, 4) I agree that the peplum top is a good style for you and this is lovely on you! However, I'm not crazy about it paired with the pencil skirt. To me, the outfit just looks too "stiff." I want that skirt to be paired with something flowy and soft - and vice-versa with the top! Do you have any jersey tube skirts? I bet the peplum top would look great with them. And, how about an upscale "sweatshirt" with the pencil skirt?

5) My favorite of the bunch. So much fun! I like the way you are exposing just a bit of skin at your ankle. I'm wondering about that cuff though. It looks pretty big and thick. Can you work the cuff so that it perhaps is more "relaxed" looking?

6) I like the proportions of this outfit much better than the one with the citron skirt and peplum top. I think that you look great with your top tucked in. When you wear your tops untucked it makes you look really long in the torso and just seems to drag the eye down - KWIM? I think the narrow v-neck on the top is just fine on You!

7, 8) I cannot tell from your pics - but your top (in the front) looks as though it is bordering on being a little too short. If it does not cover your crotch area I wouldn't wear the top with leggings - I'd pair the leggings with a longer top so that that is not an issue. I cannot tell from the pics where the EF topper hits you in the back. Is it shorter than the ivory top - or longer? I want the EF topper to be cropped in the front - so that there is a bigger difference in length between your top and the topper.

You have some beautiful jewelry and great shoes! I also am really "into" nail-polish - but I like to change it out weekly - otherwise I get bored! Right now I'm wearing a navy-blue.

Your arms are nicely toned for sleeveless tops - but, I'm wondering if sleeved tops would look more flattering on you because it would break up the visual image of your long arms (that is not a criticism of your arms - just an observation, OK?)

Thank you for sharing your process with us!

Looks like you've already made some great analysis on these pieces. I agree that both shorts lengths look good; the length in #1 is great for dressier/going out situations and the denim pair in #2 looks good for really casual events. (The bagginess of #2 is what makes them work.) That said, I'd like to see a less t-shirt looking top paired with it, to up the dressiness just a touch; a knit with a different sleeve shape would work too. #4 and #6 both work incredibly well on you! You are working that silhouette. My favorite is #7, so long as the leggings are more of a substantial knit pant (like a ponte pant) rather than thinner jersey yoga leggings

Some thoughts:
1. Your analysis is spot on; I can see the gaping armholes & agree they'd annoy me.
2. Your legs look really good in this length, so why not.
6. Looks really good! My favourite.
7. It may not be your usual style, but FWIW it's very edgy/sharp.

Great outfits and analysis. Honestly, I like both length of shorts on you. I think the shorter ones are great for casual days, BBQs etc. If I were going out, I usually opt for longer shorts because they seem more refined. I think you look great in shorts that are right about the knee and a little tapered to give some shape. Love the citron skirt with peplum. You wear that silhouette well. Love the whole outfit in 5--very fun. My fave of the lot is probably 7. Volume and waist surrender over skinny is gorgeous on you. The Gizeh make it look very modern too.

If you haven't followed my previous posts, this is "No Spend September" for me based on a challenge by my DD, I have recently learned, with Angies help that I have a rectangle body shape, not the pear shape that I had previously assumed. I am trying to really figure out what looks good on me and what I should keep and give away. A logical starting point are the 20+ Ivory tops in my closet. Please help me figure out which are the best, and which I should eliminate. I'm trying to learn what I like and don't like about them, etc. I don't want to keep repeating the same shopping mistakes.

Please give me generous feedback. It will help me learn! Thanks!!

1. This tank top from J Crew is going to be eliminated because it has a hole. I noticed some discomfort wearing it though. You may not be able to tell from the picture, but from the side, the armholes gape and my bra, and chest are very visible. If I kept it, I would have wear something over it to feel comfortable. What does everyone think of the length of these shorts? I like the color.
2. This is a second casual tee and shorts look. I rather like this one. I don't know if I am too old for shorts this length, but I somehow prefer the shorter ones to the longer ones. What do you think?
3 &4. This is a Citron Pencil Skirt and sleeveless top. I really like sleeveless tops. I love how the peplum gives me some shape (nice illusion). I also love that I was able to wear my New Anyi Lu sandals. Bought them on sale when looking for black sandals. It was my first time wearing them, and they were very comfortable. In fact the entire outfit was comfortable. How does it look to others?
5. Yes, I bought the Missoni high tops. I couldn't resist. This is how I styled them for the first time. I like the look of this dotty spotty tank top, but once again, the arm holes are too wide, so I need to wear a topper. I rolled the white jeans up, and then ended up taping them in place, not very well done, The kids I work with loved the shoes.
6. I think this might be my favorite look. It's hard because the way I am photographing distorts my body shape. I once again am wearing a sleeveless blouse. Even though this is a v-neck, it is narrow, and I love the collar detail. I also love the loose drape of the blouse. I am wearing a camisole underneath so I was comfortable and not worried about bending over (often an issue for me when I am working). I like the length of the skirt. These are a favorite pair of shoes - Chie Mihara. Sadly, I smeared the shirt collar and tie with deodorant. It may show in the pics?
7. I have never worn black leggings other than for running. Today, I paired some with a long draping Ivory tunic top. I liked it. Super comfortable. I added an EF high low sweater topper, and my Gizeh Birks. What do you think? It is definitely a change from the typical for me.
8-12. I am fond of accessories to add color. I often use nail polish in bright shades. Last month I had orange. This month its sea foam green. I always wear a watch, and bangles. Sometimes I add rings. In most of these pictures I have on a necklace and earrings. It's funny because I have a huge scarf collection but I didn't wear any this week.
