They play just fine on my Ipad, bummer. if you Google Carlos Gardel and Solange Acosta, you will get lots of info. Solange is the dancer. Carlos Gardel is like an Argentinian Sinatra and most well known performer of the genre. I grew up on the stuff. Growing up, I would see my grandma in tears everytime she saw a Gardel movie. There are also stories of mom jumping off the balcony (First floor only lol), as a teenager, to go to the "house of tango" a very famous cabaret, to listen to performers and see the dancing. It cost more than I was used to paying at the time, and it's survived thoughts of purging (I won't purge it, promise). But I think you're right that it isn't really antithetical to my style goals. </p> <p>Anya, please, please hijack this thread as much as you want! I would love to hear more about your experiences. Your mention that you studied up on musicality was intriguing--I would love a better explanation of what you actually did. The assistant instructor, a guy, was someone who had a really instinctive grasp of music. He happens to be a visual artist too (sculptor/painter/furniture maker--it's his gallery where we had the class), and the female instructor was talking about how his artistic skill and spatial sense informed his ability to quickly become good at tango. He also spent a lot of time talking about "reading" the music. And as you say, becoming sensitive to the partner's body language. I find it all so interesting. And incredibly challenging....</p> <p>Thanks also for some guidance on shoes. Any particular recommendations? I am not sure if you're here in the US--your link appears to showcase European-made shoes. I would want to get something tango-friendly but for now not custom-made. And I wouldn't want much of a heel right now. But those shoes are so pretty! I have to say, I really love tango style (glamorous clothing, so evocative and romantic and sexy). </p> <p>Zap, thank you for the background and the links. Tango is really cool . I'm into it for almost two years, and it's been amazing learning to follow in dance, learning to interpret body language and listen to the music. I went all crazy last year and went to classes about technique and musicality and really learned more about me in the process.<br /> Also, shoes :<br /> I look for smooth ( leather, or suede or smooth man made ) sole. Also, flexible and no platform ( or a small and very flexible one) . The more you feel the floor the better. I personally like shoes well anchored to the foot with ankle/t-straps but that's just me.<br /> I used normal shoes for the beginning and then I got a couple custom made sandals.<br /> The outfit is perfect. I find it endearing that people dress up for dancing. There ended up being four students and two teachers, just the right amount. I was not good, but did much better than I'd expected...I want to try it some more. The dance is beautiful.</p> <p>This outfit was fine; no one was dressed up though everyone looked nice-casual. The shoes were comfortable but I ended up taking them off and going in my stockinged feet, because the Fluevog soles didn't provide the smooth glide you need to push off sideways or backwards. Need to find some better shoes. </p> <p>I never mentioned here, because it would seem so counterintuitive to other aspects of my style, but I have this romantic/ gothic rose fetish. But they have to be red roses, on some kind of black background. This is the only thing I own, but I am wildly attracted to them. It's like this Stevie Nicks throwback.
