Here's an update:</p> <p>I took a trip to Arizona to visit my sister all-but-legally (best friend since I was 16, and my parents call her their other daughter), which was WONDERFUL. She lives and works in Grand Canyon National Park as a restaurant manager, so I got to stay at her apartment that's a 15-minute walk from the South Rim at Bright Angel... there are no words for how beautiful that place is. None.</p> <p>It was also a productive trip in terms of shopping. The treasures I picked up are: <ul> <li>An $18 Route 66 tank top from a souvenir shop in Williams which, yes, is on Route 66 and milks it in their shop and restaurant theming. I haven't finalized my not-to-be-deterred-from shopping list yet, but I knew a couple tank tops would be on it, so I went for it because of the need AND the good price. Sister got a matching one, so it's even more meaningful!</li> <li>A super touristy Grand Canyon National Part tee in my <i>favorite </i>bright blue. It has some orangey canyon colors in its graphic, which also makes me happy. I wore it on my birthday to set the tone for the coming year/decade--I want to be myself, I want to travel and hike a ton, and I want more cheerful colors in my life.</li> <li>A couple pairs of twill pants - one pair is straight-leg, and meant to be ankle-length but they're a 16L, so they look full length on me (I'm 5'5" and sometimes long works for me and sometimes it doesn't, depending on the cut and hem length). The other is a straight leg, full length burgundy pair that is unfortunately a bit too small (no fitting room in the store) but should fit after I lose another 10 or so pounds, so I'm hanging onto them. Both were thrifted at around $9 each and are in great condition. The red pair fits perfectly right now and if they become too big for me, I can give them to my lovely wife who's just a bit bigger than I am right now and also actively working on losing weight. We both love red.</li> <li>A light blue/turquoise corduroy jacket that fits so well I swear it was put on the rack for me--also thrifted. I was delighted, because I wanted to get a couple corduroy pieces this fall and I haven't seen anything in that shade of blue. And I'm excited to have a light color to add to the mix for my fall wardrobe. I'm excited to pair it with various colors and neutrals to see what I like best.</li> <li>A light denim jacket with an embroidered llama on the back, which also felt like it was put on the rack for me because it fits perfectly and, come on, it has a llama! :)</li> <li>A couple inexpensive Navajo bracelets--made from the kinds of materials you can pick up at a craft store, mostly, but one has a few ghost beads and tiny hematite beads.</li> <li>And the big splurge of the trip... an absolutely <i>stunning </i>Navajo pendant done in a traditional inlay style with a space motif. I bought it from who may be the coolest guy I've ever met in my life. In Cameron, which is within the Navajo Nation and is about an hour away from Grand Canyon Village, there's an awesome restaurant where my sister, a few friends of hers, and I went for dinner, and we were all nerding out with our server over his awesome Lord of the Rings tattoos. He mentioned that he was learning and showed us the pieces he was working on, on himself, and said he also made jewelry. He showed us his Instagram account (@ltsosie_ink if you want to check out his work!) and let us know some of his jewelry was for sale at the trading post, so I ended up coming back to Cameron for the express purpose of buying that pendant after I got paid. It wasn't cheap, but it meant a lot to me to be able to support the local economy, a Native artist, and generally awesome human being I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to. My 20s were about figuring out what works for me, and my 30s will be about having FUN with that, making fewer purchase mistakes (I hope!), and being pickier about what I choose to add to my wardrobe. If it's not perfect, it won't do, unless it's something I already have that I'm working on replacing.</p> <p>It's finally starting to cool down in Atlanta (relatively speaking, anyway--highs are in the low 80s, though mornings and evenings are my ideal temperature range, around low-mid 70s which, incidentally, is warmer than my ideal range used to be before I lost 40 pounds over the last couple of years), so I'm enjoying some of my early fall faves. I've been admiring my two sweater vests I bought in the spring ALL SUMMER waiting for the chance to wear them again, and that time has arrived.</p> <p>I decided to go for a 90s color palette with my black jeans and sneakers, black and white houndstooth vest (the other one is lilac and white), and light blue denim shirt (with short sleeves for temperature flexibility). My hair is a bit longer than shoulder length now (if I gently pull on a strand so it's straight rather than wavy, it goes a bit past my collar bone!) and back to my natural dark brown (so dark most people read it as black), and I've been enjoying using claw hair clips to pull it back for a bit more polished look than a ponytail. I'll definitely do this again with my other vest, and see how I like the look with matching denim on the top and bottom. But I LOVE black, white, and light blue. No handbag right now because I was just heading to the pharmacy to pick up my medications and just stuck my wallet and phone in my pockets, but I've been enjoying the brown crossbody bag I got earlier this year, and the crocheted bucket bag I picked up during my travels in Ecuador this summer. I'd like to get a couple more for variety, but I'm easing into expanding my bag capsule because I've never been a "bag person" and used to make soooo many purchasing mistakes with them because I didn't know what I wanted. But now I do-lightweight, easy, something I can fling over my shoulder and get going. </p> <p>I also want more sweater vests in colors/patterns besides houndstooth. I'd like to get at least one solid one this fall, I think, or maybe two so I can get a neutral and a bright color. </p> <p>Thanks for reading! Comments and suggestions are super welcome. </p>
